View Full Version : Advice needed: Interested in buying a (specific) TB

Here's the situation: there's a mare who's results I've been tracking but I don't know her trainer or owner (currently running about 200 miles away from me at Presque Isle). Hasn't run/breezed at the track for about a month according to her stats.
If she is ever done as a race horse, I'd love to have the opportunity to buy her to retrain as a riding horse. (I own her half sister who I just adore and am about to start trialing.) We sadly just had to euthanize 2 retirees (25 and 26 years old, respectively) and it looks like maybe a 3rd retiree (32 y.o.) is starting to show signs that he isn't as comfortable as he once was. The field is turning into a mighty lonely place.
Does anyone have any connections at Presque Isle? Or any advice on how to approach the trainer (or even just get his contact info)? Thanks!

You can ask the local CANTER rep to check her out next time she goes to the track and talk to the trainer about her. The CANTER people know which trainers are known to them and are easy to approach about selling through them when a horse's racing career is over.
Alternatively: You can get a trainer's contact info by either calling the racing secretary or by caling the back gate and asking for his barn phone number. To get to either extension, call the main track number. The switchboard should transfer you.
Sometimes it is hard to get the number -- so do not explain why you are really calling. Say that you are trying to return his call but have lost his number.
The best time to call is between 10:30 -- 11 am. After training hours and before he leaves for the morning.
Often trainers do not trust "people like us". Some of them perceive us as rich people who are trying to "steal" their horses for less than they are worth. That said, you have to approach the trainer with the possibilty that this is his mindset. He might not care if you have the sister or about the old horses you have had to put down. And he will be suspect if you want the mare for free.
Has she been running for a tag? How far apart have her races been spaced? Any evidence of prior injuries (i.e. long layoffs?)
You can get her complete racing history by joining www.equineline.com (http://www.equineline.com) and then you can buy her race record for $3.00.
Then it is between you and the trainer and owner.

Heres a link to the Presque Isle website
Call the racing office and ask for the trainers contact information. You dont need to say why or give a reason, just ask for it.
Use this link to enter the horses name(top right hand corner box). The next page will give you her entire race history (free)... .and scroll down a big for the FREE 5x pedigree.
If shes run at PI, you can use the first link to find her replay races!
Good luck with this mare!

My in-laws are up there and we take some form our farm back and forth. Who is the trainer? I'm also a CANTER rep for MNR but know many people up there.

Thanks for the advice! Definitely not looking for a hand out. She's in my virtual stable and has been dropping down in the claimers... won less than $1400 in 12 starts and has been last or near it in every race. Same owner for her first 11 races. Comments read: Bumped at gate - saved ground; outrun; done early; stumbled at start - through at 1/2 mile; off slowly - done early; slowest to begin; bumped at start - outrun; stalked pace - faltered; saved ground - no factor; through after 3/4; no threat; veered out at start.
Doesn't sound like she's great at the gate. No gaps between the races until before the last (last month) where she gets 4 months between. She had the same owners for the first 11 and then switched hands (doesn't seem to have been claimed) and ended up 500 miles away but somewhat closer to me which makes looking at her a bit more feasible.

Also, add her to Thoroughbred Connect in case they know about it and have added her to their TBC as a horse who needs a home: thoroughbredconnect.com.
