View Full Version : I fell off today and want to share it with the world.

So, today I fell off and wound up in the ER!!! I was cantering up a diagonal on the left lead (which was the correct one) and the horse I was riding really wanted to change his lead, but I wouldn't allow him to, so that he wouldn't be on the wrong lead. So he said fine, I won't change my lead!! Instead, he decided to buck and spin and head toss all at once!! Plus, we were turning a corner at the moment, so that didn't help either. I landed pretty bad. I went head first (wearing a helmet), but to break my fall, I used my elbow, which got a really bad abrasion on it, and the nurse had to pick all of the sand and gravel out of it :/ I also landed on my hip really hard and then plopped over finally onto my back. I could not get up, and was lying there on the arena's far corner until the other riders noticed a horse FOLLOWING behind them with no rider. Once x-ray'd, I wound up with a lumbar strain, a contusion on my right hip, a nasty torn up elbow, and a bunch of pain medicine!!! I am alright though!! This will be the 4th time I had a very graceful unplanned dismount. :)

Glad you are going to be ok....enjoy the pain meds!

I can relate - Two months ago I fell off and fractured both elbows (along with lots of soft tissue damage to my forearms) and had an enormous contusion on my hip (arnica gel really helped!). Still can't ride... the specialist laughed at me when I asked if I could soon a week or two after it happened.

At least the pain meds they gave me worked!

Hope you heal fast and are able to ride soon!

Jingles... feel better soon!

Ouch! Very similar to a fall I had almost 10 years ago, except landing on the elbow I landed on my shoulder and broke the top part of my humerus in half! (also then bounced onto my lower back, but just strained as well).

If the landing on the back was anything like mine, you may have some wicked muscle spasms for awhile- hope they gave you muscle relaxers along with the pain meds!!!

Heal fast!!

Ouch!!! Get well soon!!!

I can't count or even remember how many times I've fallen off ponies and horses, but I've been riding since age 6, so over 30 years of riding.....that's ALOT of riding and falling :)

I feel your pain!!!

Seems when we are kids we 'bounce back' a little better when we fall...LOL Are kids made of rubber?

Glad you are okay though...naughty pony

Only the 4th time? Heck you are just a newbie in that department!! ;-)

Seriously though, hope you are back in the saddle soon.

Ouch! I can totally relate to that. I fell off today at an event derby in warmup. Horse took the oxer very awkwardly and I flew off. Wacked my head really hard and knocked the wind out of me. The paramedics wanted to take me to the ER but I was okay after a few minutes. Got back on and rode my course (twice!)

Hope you heal soon. Sucks to be injured during the summer.

What a bummer! I hope you heal fast, and when you do, get the horse checked over to find out what was bothering him so badly that he wanted to change leads so insistently. Methinks he was not comfortable on that human-preferred lead, that this was not just a behavioral thing.

I came off today too. Asp spooked going down a drop and went sideways. Sadly, I didn't and landed flat on my back. Knocked the wind out of myself and scared the life out of the jump judge, who came running over.

We're both fine though. :)

Hope you're soon feeling better. Ice packs are your friends!

I had a fall like that a couple of years ago...I was in a lesson, trainer's dog went missing, she was yelling for dog, I was doing some crazy exercise standing in stirrups dog comes out of woods - I got launched.Sprained my back too. got to enjoy some nice pain meds too.

I'm sorry, hope you are feeling better!

If misery loves company, I fell of BOTH my horses yesterday, neither of whom I had yet fallen off in the 1+ yrs I've had them.

The first bucked me off following a tiny 2' warm up jump. Totally my fault, didn't see it coming, didn't get defensive soon enough. Instead of landing in the nice soft ring, or the grass outside it, I had to bang my knee on the railroad tie ring border. My knee is big and purple and it really hurt to drive home from the lesson (clutch leg).

The next was doing a lovely stretchy trot, checking out the footing I guess, as he suddenly stopped, dropped, and rolled. Smacked him hard as he was going down but he did it anyway, just had to roll clear of him.

I guess I have my excuse not to drive or go running today . . .

sdlbredfan- He is young and still figuring out his flying changes, so when turing corners coming from up the diagonal, he will insist that he is smarter than me and thinks I forgot to change his lead....so he will try and do it for me!! I was determined to get him to stay on the correct lead, but apparently he didn't like being proved wrong. I don't think it was his fault...he is still young and doesn't have his big-boy pants ALL the way on.....he just cought me off-guard.

Oh, and...... it shouldn't be too long until I ride again.....just a couple of days or so..... :) I won't do any major jumping or serious riding, maybe some trails to get back into the cycle :)

Please make sure you follow up with an ortho for your hip! I took many falls and just 'worked it out' which ended up years later in a hip replacement at a young age because the soft tissue healed wrong so the joint did not perform properly wearing it out very early!!

I feel your pain... The reason I'm sitting here reading the forum instead of riding (or doing much else) is because I got bucked off a month ago and broke a bone in my lower arm. Had to have surgery and a plate and screws put in. Won't be able to ride for a few months and I miss it sooo much! We horse people are tough cookies:-) feel better soon!
