Can it be done? I have no taste but a great sense of humor. Can we make fun funny helmet covers to ride in xc? funny but not offensive of course. I guess you can say this is a strange spin off from the bumper sticker thread.

The poof balls people insist on wearing are tacky.

Maybe cover your helmet with the little stickers with phrases on them like bikers do.

Or like sportbikers that have that fake mohawk on their helmet?

Thats what I was thinking- biker patch type deal. Although I have seen grown men eventing with viking helmet covers which I found amusing. You can probably attach a fauxhawk pretty easily but I'm not sure if I'm willing to go that far yet. Need to get better before everyone starts staring!!

You can do it - but some of the "traditionalists" will find it tacky. That said, it's not against the rules.

You just need to find the right venue to play with this. May be a schooling event or a Halloween special. Or a steampunk fun ride. The organizers have to have a sense of humor to really go with the concept.
But..
Let me know when you find the spot, because I'd like to play, too!

"Poof balls" are very much normal (or were) on track helmets. I used to have a helmet cover for my old jockey cap I used on the track that was green with silver hearts and a big POMPON. :D I still have it, it's ancient and way too much of a relic to use.

Would I use one now for eventing? No. But I used to. Things are more suitable when one is younger . . .

Lol! Baxtersmom- I love it!! Too bad I already ordered my mohawk!! Oh well, just have to order a new helmet cover to make option 1 a possibility. Could you imagine if I did a dressage freestyle to George Clinton in that thing? I would be banned for life!! I'm definitely digging the pirate as well!! I can just imagine the attention I'll be garnering at the next schooling show. On a side note, anyone going to the Hillcrest schooling HT Aug 6th in NC? I'll be the one in the mohawk. If anyone lets me get away with it, it will be them.

Baxter'smom,
I NEEDED those objects d' art today!:lol::lol:
They might even work for deer hunting season. I might try it for my entrance to a Woff clinic this fall. He may be a serious stickler for appropriate attire, but he does have a well developed sense of humor.:winkgrin::D:lol:

I couldn't bring myself to do it! But, at the track this week, I saw a half dozen or so exercise riders with fauxhawks. Lol. But as far as pure tacky? There's an almost 60 year old woman whose black helmet cover features a hot pink pompom, hot pink feather on the back, and a hot pink playboy bunny on either side. *shrug* it certainly takes all kinds!

Inse, your facebook page isn't accessible. I hope you had appropriate music for your dressage,:lol: I can just see those curves and sway down centerline, with the beseeching hand and arm movements towards the judge....

I've seen someone ride in one with devil horns on it. I WANTED it. I think they are great, who cares if the Stuffies don't like them.

So sorry, I am an idiot when it comes to Facebook, etc. etc....

I've changed my profile picture to show the Hawaiian shirt in all it's glory, along with the parrot helmet cover ~ ENJOY!

Just remember when you are the x-country course somethime you have to go under low trees and i would be scraed that to much on the top of my helmet would get caught! That would be my luck!

Gotta say... I think I would rock a fauxhawk before I ever put a big pompom on my helmet.

Helmet covers are designed to come off easily for that reason. Snowboarders and skiers have frequently been know to go under trees- whether they meant to or not.:eek::lol:

This is a kind of fun that eventers can have for more harmless individuality. We laugh at the danger, like the 3 muskateers and their plumes. We are trained to the teeth, so the conquering of the course is within our grasp. At the very least, it will break up the monotony for the fence judges..:winkgrin::lol:

Of course, when someone wins, wearing something new, everyone will then rush out to get the item. It must have good magic, right???

I'm a crocheter. There, I have said it, and I am proud.

Also, I have no shame.

That said, may I present:

The Gollum:
http://www.crochetme.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/500x375/__key/CommunityServer.Components.PostAttachments/00.00.08.96.48/gollum_5F00_main.jpg

The Princess Leia:
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3878/2497/320/LeahHat1.1.jpg
This could be modified to crochet, I'm sure.

The Bowling Pin:
http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_570xN.228128713.jpg
Which could be modified to represent something NSFW if you are seriously bawdy. :: makes note for self ::

The Viking:
http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/157/3/AAAAAvy3aAkAAAAAAVcy0w.jpg?v=1222890090000]the Viking

Any of these could be done in cool cotton or ribbon yarn, or for the green among us, VCR tape.

I am envisioning a niche market here...

I have a couple fun hats I made for friends, the chapcat and chapkitten, but I can't access those photos on this computer. Bummer for you all, I know.

People who say pom poms are tacky have no imagination.

My husband's brother is a TB jockey and he got me some nylon helmet covers for xmas one year. One had a pompom. I thought, "I will NEVER wear this." That same month I got a mare off the track and was trying to think of a barn name that started with P. Pom Pom! I now always wear a pom pom on my helmet because it reminds me not to take myself too seriously and to ride like a KID and less like a micro-managing adult. My pom pom is awesome. Those that don't like it, can kiss it for good luck.

Really these are the funniest ever. There are lots more but my favourites are

http://www.thetackhouse.ca/tail-wags-helmet-cover-red-devil-1503.html

http://www.thetackhouse.ca/tail-wags-helmet-cover-lobster-266.html

http://www.thetackhouse.ca/tail-wags-helmet-cover-spike-puffer-fish.html

OMG hilarious. If only they weren't so expensive it might be a good idea just for laughs at home. I'm reallly not that great a rider that I could pull it off.

I was running late at Stuart's last weekend and didn't check my gear as carefully as I normally do before xc. Fortunately, other than a bit of a green stop at the coffin, everything went great. I was so excited to see my pictures! They turned out great for the most part, but when I zoomed in to see them better, I noticed a weird white square on top of my black CO helmet. Apparently, a discarded piece of paper from my lint roller stuck itself firmly to my helmet and rode around the whole course with me! The best part is that nobody told me. I guess they thought I'd done it on purpose. Geesh, guys. I ride a Paint! We don't need more decoration:)

Oh well. At least it keeps me humble...

a shark helmet cover. Fin on the top and long tail down the back. When you canter it "swims."

I want a gigantic chicken one :-)

You are not alone!! I'm pretty sure I've seen almost all of them.. hubby has ALL of them on the "entertainment" hard drive. He's a big car guy so I'm pretty sure I got major bonus points when I told him I loved Top Gear when we first met and it came up lol. Top Gear is also pretty much the only thing I watch on the TV when I got visit my mother in Glasgow, Scotland lol.
