I want to so some short endurance fun rides/ctr's with my large pony this summer and fall. His hooves crack easily and he doesn't do well on rocky terrain barefoot. Since we wouldn't be going out that often, I think boots for just his fronts would be a better option. I'm not going to use them very hard or very often so the more expensive Old Macs just don't make sense for me to purchase. Are there other boots you guys have tries that are decent quality for cheaper....say $40 or less?....that will not give rubs of compromise his comfort? Also, is it a bad idea to look into used boots given they are in working shape?

At $55. per boot, I tried Bonnie's B4 Boots http://b4boots.com/index2.html They stayed on for all 14 miles of muddy mucky trail at salt fork lake, OH last week. It was my mounts and my first experience with hoof boots. Other riders in my group noted my horse had less slippage than their steel shod horses.
Bonnie claims to have boots lasting over 400 miles. 00s are the smallest that she makes and she can rework/repair worn boots.

If I understand correctly, no Boots over shod feet though, right?
That's too bad :(

I'm in love with these http://www.renegadehoofboots.com/ from afar. They've been on my list for a while.
