View Full Version : How to get my draft cross in-shape

I have a '98 draft/morgan who i plan on racing in oct and showing at hunter paces. Grim came very underweight and out of shape. He has gained 200lb and some muscle, but is still not where i need him at. I heard that draft x are difficult to condition for Xcountry, anyone know what they're doing and can help me with a work-out plan? I've been cantering him a lot in pastures and take him out on a track 3 days a week at a trot for an hr or so. He still lacks stamina, mainly at the canter.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Trot miles and even walk miles actually do a drafty type a LOT of fitness good. You don't have to canter all that much to get canter fitness.

I do a lot of trot/canter sets with my draftx. Now that summer is here and temps are outrageous by 8am, I just do about 20 minutes before 8, consisting of lots of trotting to try and keep him somewhat fit. For cool down, I focus on leg yields turns on the forehand. I cannot wait for cooler weather to get him going strong again!

For my draft cross I do trot and canter sets. I started off at 4 minute trots, 2 minute walks, repeat three times. Then 2 minute canters with 2 minute rests, repeat three times. I worked up to 5 minute trots and 3 minute canters, and I will aim for 4 minute canters as we get ready to move up a level.

There's a draft horse race :)

Here are some older threads about conditioning a draft cross or getting them "going":
