So is it possible for a horse to be bored with a "simpler" dressage test?

My horse will score in the mid 30's on his training level tests and then score low 20's on his preliminary tests... WTF?!?!?!

is he just bored that all we really do is walk, trot, canter and maybe a lengthening? In the prelim test, everything comes up very quick, which I think works very well to keep his attention. He seems to "test" me in the training when he has more time to think vs the prelim test---- frustrating

Yep. My big horse, a dressage "refugee," improved dramatically in his rideability and his scores (all other things being equal) when i started riding prelim tests. There's just more to hold his interest and more chances for me to rebalance and re-engage. The first time we did a schooling fix a test, T first and then P for the same judge, she said the same thing to me.

I am now riding Novice tests on my younger horse (demoted from T after a crash in SJ) and it's killing both of us for the same reason.
