So I used to gallop horses at Bowie 4 years ago, then joined the military and have been deployed overseas ever since.

Now as I'm preparing to come home, I'm reading all these horrible articles about Laurel's lack of race dates and Bowie closing, etc etc.

What the heck happened? I know the industry has been spiraling for a long time, but have they stopped live racing at Laurel altogether? I realize Colonial's open right now, but will Laurel have more live dates? Google is returning a bunch of mish mash articles, I'm just hoping someone on here can give me a straight answer. I report to Annapolis on the 22nd of July and I'm literally going to cry if I come home to no live racing. :-(

They take the summer off every year. They start back at Timonium at the end of August then start back at Laurel until next April when they go to Pimlico. As for what happened, we are completely surrounded by slot and now slot/full casino states.

Yeah I know they close this time of year, I just had someone forward me an article about possible closure/developement of Laurel.

I think I remember something about slots being approved in MD, but at some random, none pony-related site. True?

Sorry I've been way out of the loop.

There are slots in Cecil County and will go in at some point in Anne Arundel county. The track gets a percentage of that no matter where the actual slots are. The plan to develop Laurel is just a threat at this point.
