One of my students old me there is a rule that qualifying classes must be held in a large arena and on sand.
I cannot find this anywhere. Do any of the rules mavens
know what the scoop is? (Obviously I am talking about TR
level for the large arena, but I seem to remember judging
a First 4 last year on grass that had qualifying rides in it)

Competitions are also reminded that USEF/USDF qualifying classes at ALL levels, including Training Level, MUST be held in a standard-size arena.USEF rules state that grass arenas are not recommended for qualifying classes, and if qualifying classes may be held on grass, this fact must be stated in the prize list.

This is from the guide for hosting qualifying competitions http://www.usdf.org/docs/ShowFlash/web/RegionalChamp/HostingQualifyingClasses.pdf

So not an actual chapter and verse rule??
A bit confusing as to where the line between
recommendation and requirement lies.

They recommend you not hold a qualifying class on grass. If you want to ignore the recommendation, you have to disclose that qualifying classes will be held in grass in the prizelist.
