Just read in the Lexington Herald Leader that John Velazquez is going to give part of his winnings from the Derby to Robby Albarado. What a class act!!!

His joy for riding the winning horse should not be marred by the fact that the other rider was taken off. It is very thoughtful of him to send some money that way though

I dont think giving part of the purse to RA is taking any of the joy from winning the KY Derby from him I think he is just doing what he feels right.

The owners have to pay him as well. Anytime you take a jock off you have to pay both of them.

It is classy.

Team Valor is matching Velazquez's amount according to this:

Hey Laurie....

I got a shock the other day. The post overnight Jocked off fee in Ky is $100.

OMG.

In NY it's the share of the purse that the horse earns. So the difference between NY and Ky is $124,000 to $100. WOW.

Can you remind me what it is in Md? I can't recall..

I kind of liked the karma that got Robby pulled off the Derby winner.

Not sure about it being just $100 - per the DRF: (http://www.drf.com/news/velazquez-and-irwin-agree-share-kentucky-derby-winnings-albarado) "The only obligation that Team Valor had toward compensating Albarado was the jockeys’ mount fee, which in the case of the Derby is $500."

Irwin is only coughing up some money to Robby after public shame for the switch. Partners in Team Valor had to agree to compensation too and frankly they may have been the key driving force. Just my opinion but I have less of an issue with switching the jock then I do his absolutely inappropriate remarks on trainers during the live telecast.

Ditto this. Can't say I felt bad for him.

We're both wrong. It's $110.

Because of the legal (domestic violence) issues pending trial? Yeah, it didn't bother me much either.

Same thing happened years ago when Lester Piggott replaced an injured Bill Williamson as Roberto's jockey for the 1972 Epsom Derby. That was John Galbreath's call; he wanted a 100% fit jockey on board for the big race BUT he agreed to pay Williamson as well. The British sporting press had a field day with that, blowing it way out of proportion. Williamson's comment was "I don't mind, I'm getting the money anyway."

I also have to add that I really, really didn't want to see PVal win.

I thought the karma that got him kicked in the face was even better...

Was really pretty thrilled to see Johnny Va get his first Derby win on Motion trained horse.
