It's getting to be that time of year again....

I just moved to a new place and on the two really warm days we've had thus far, there have been a distressing number of yellow jackets around the door. I'd LOVE to nip this in the bud ASAP as I am allergic and flat.out.terrified of black & yellow stingy things. I have tried traps before with limited success- I think I've figured out that I was baiting them wrong. It's supposed to be protein in the spring, right?

My main question is- how effective are they, really? Am I likely to trap enough of them to make them move on, or will I just end up attracting more to the area with a properly baited trap? Any experiences? An exterminator is, sadly, out of the question at this point in time.

Plastic bottles, you can fill 1/5 with water and add sugar or honey, close the top, open a dime size hole about 3/2 the way up and hang on a limb.

Seems to catch many yellow jackets for us.
We get the most from the mimosa tree, that seems to attract them.
