View Full Version : Popped Splints

So I did do a search to help continue my research......but still have questions/want opinions......

My horse popped a splint around Thanksgiving. Vet said give him a week to 10 days off with some bute. Discontinue use of bute towards then end of 10 days and if he was sound, start riding him again. So here it is March, my horse has been back in normal work for a while and seems to be doing well. But lately (last week or so) the splint is warm to the touch but my horse is sound. I have been using DMSO. and cold hosing it after I ride.

Any other suggestions? what else should I be doing? does he need time off? do I need to call the vet again? I'm so confused

thanks for the help!

I would have it x rayed to make sure it isnt going to be a bigger problem. Had horse totally sound with a splint but 2 months later it got bigger still sound. So figured we would xray just to be safe and sure enough it was broken. For this one we had it removed so it wouldnt be problem down the road. I know feel like having splints xrayed is smart just to make sure. Thats my 2 cents hope it helps but dont panic yours may be nothing like this one.

I too would get an x-ray. Depending where the splint is, it can continure to be a problem and cause your horse pain. My horse popped a decent sized splint last winter, vet xrayed, and sent xrays to a local specialist, who advised it be surgically removed due to its placement. I got a second opinion, and decided not to have the surgery, but was told by both specialists that there are cases where these things need to be removed...if you're concerned, I would get it checked out.

Rolling Pin? ;)

Seriously, I would call the vet and just ask his/her opinion.
