I need a vacuum and have been looking at this one. anyone use it? Like it? Anything better that's cheaper? I do want a super strong one so a walmart special won't work. I specifically want one for horses.

Try a shop vac.

I have the Rapid Groom -- bought it used for a good price and have used it quite a bit. I really like it. I had used an Electro Groom in the past but couldn't spend that kind of money, plus I like the Rapid Groom's size and portability. All of my horses, even the fraidy cat one, have learned to love being vac'd.

Friend of mine had one of the cheaper types -- Metro Vac I think? -- that was really cheap and not nearly as effective or durable as the Rapid Groom. That's about all I know about a cheaper alternative.

Have a Rapid Groom. Love it. Horses stand for it. Works real well. Highly recommend it.

Love my Rapid Groom. I found one used on craigslist for a great price.

I have both an Electro-Groom and a small Vac-N-Blo. UI think they both work well, though I haven't compared them side by side. I got the Vac-N-Blo from Horse.com (Country Supply) for a very reasonable price. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to buy disposable bags for it.

I use a whole house vac, installed up in the hayloft, with pipe down to the grooming stall. Works spectacularly well, and much quieter than having the vacuum right there making a noise.

Those of you who use a shop vac, do you get any kind of special attachment? I've been VERY tempted to take one to the barn lately... pony has a super dense coat, rolls every day, too cold for baths, and the dirt is pretty much permanently lodged in his hair.

Third the shop vac. I also use this attachment ~ http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=2e87c077-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5&gas=dr%20smiths

I think it's ridiculous to pay hundreds of dollars for a "special horse vac", when you can get a $20 - $40 Shop-Vac and a $20 attachment. I've had my S/V for 15 years.

Sweet! Thanks nasalberry! My college had a centrally-installed vacuum in the barn and it was soooo nice... I almost never had to bathe with that thing around, just white markings. That attachment looks awesome.

And FYI for everyone else, if you want a super-portable shopvac or don't have easily accessable outlets in your barn, they now make a "lid" shopvac that is battery powered and fits over the top of any standard 5gal. bucket, like a spackle bucket or those big green Bevals buckets.

I just looked at Home Depot's page for wet/dry vacs, and am wondering if anyone knows whether one of these would be a good candidate at the barn?? :) Link:

I don't see why not. This one - http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware-Wet-Dry-Vacuums/h_d1/N-5yc1vZb8pi/R-202198493/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 - is way bigger than my Shop Vac and even has wheels!
