I need some suggestions for half chaps. Looking for chaps under $80. Any favorite brands that are durable, long lasting, and comfortable (lessons, around the barn, etc)??

I've always had Ariats and they seem to be great. I've had 2 pairs of the Ariat Classic Half Chaps (http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-3563&ids=147807564) and I know they are more than you wanted to spend, but they are great. Also, Dover has the Ariat Stable Half Chap (http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-3563&ids=147807564) for cheaper. I've never had that style before, but I've been really happy with my other Ariat half chaps. :)

For the money, you can't beat the Dublin suede half chaps. Those suckers fit well, are comfortable, durable, and will run you about $40. I'm wearing a pair of Treadsteps now that were given to me as a gift, (more $$ than you want to spend) and while they are lovely, when they die I will likely switch back to Dublins!

I found a sweet pair of Ariats on sale, so keep watch on the clearance racks.

I second the Ariats. I have gone through Dublin, Riding Sport, and a few other $40-50 chaps. They last no more than 6 months. I finally shelled out around $100 on a pair of leather Ariats with the really thick quilted suede on the inside, and I love them. Much more durable and really comfortable!

These are the type of half chaps I like. Here they are for $60 (full leather)

Last weekend - I bought some "Elite" half chaps from our local tack store. I tried them on side-by-side with the Ariat Classics and hands down liked the look, the feel, and the fit better of the Elite. They are thinner calf leather than the Ariats. So far - I love them!

Though I suggested the Ovations, because I saw them for $60.....my PERSONAL FAVORITE LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM are the Grand Prix Half Chaps
http://www.tackroominc.com/grand-prix-leather-half-chaps-p-1056.html

These are simply the best. They are so comfortable, fit so well, look great and are extremly high quality. It's just that they are expensive :(

But I agree with you on The Elite (Grand Prix)....nice half chaps!

Try a consignment or used tack shop in your area. Great items at even better prices.

I second the vote for Grand Prix half chaps. More than the 40-60 range but they will last for YEARS. I have two pairs, and they're still going strong after 10 years of multiple horses per day. The full grain leather lasts well, looks classy and is SO comfortable, with more sizing options than most other varieties out there. Worth the initial investment since they'll give you 2-3 times the life span of many other less-expensive brands.

I have the basic suede Tredsteps ($80-$90 range now, I think). They are eleven years old, and I have worn them essentially every schooling ride in that time (the exception being when it's very cold and I wear my winter boots!). I have had some restitching done and the elastic that goes under the boot replaced ONCE. Oh, and the snaps came off several years back - I used a hammer and screwdriver to reattach them, which took all of about 30 seconds each and I've never had a problem again.

I have begun to think that they will NEVER die! (Which is funny because they are actually about an inch too short - when I bought them I needed something immediately and that was the only height the tack shop had in my width - and I used to think, "When I get around to it, I'll get a pair that's the proper height." Now I feel like it would be disloyal to replace them when they have been through so much with me...)

I got the Ariat Breeze Half Chaps (I splurged a little bit, they are about $100). I had previously had a few pairs of the Ariat All Round II halfchaps and I felt that they never lasted well.
I was a little skeptical about the Breeze when I first got them, but I have had them for 6 months now (I wear them daily) and there is not a hint of any wear or tear. They are also incredibly comfortable and quite grippy. I highly recommend them!

Thanks for the suggestions :) I loveeee the look of the Grand Prix chaps but they are way more than i was looking to spend. But considering how long they last, it might be worth the investment in the long run. Thanks :)

The GP Elites I picked up were only $75. They are listed on Dover as $89.
