View Full Version : A Fine Romance - stallion service auction - to help save horses : Done! Canterlope wins!

Last year I was thrilled and privileged to be a part of the auction to raise funds to help Baby Aiden. It was a wonderful, gratifying experience.
This year, I have been wishing for another really good cause to donate a breeding to, and nothing is closer to my heart than the fate of retired racehorses, specifically old broodmares, who race, and then have foals, who are never anything but a commodity.. and then, often, tossed aside, or shipped for meat..
Fernie, and others on this BB, spend money out of their own pockets to try to rescue these horses.. but shipping, feeding, vet bills, etc ,cost money, as we all know.
I have sent Fernie a small cheque, and that should be able to buy something, but I know it is a small drop in the bucket compared to what is needed.
I do have one thing of value though, and I would be very happy and honoured to donate a breeding to my TB stallion A Fine Romance to raise funds to help in the rescue and care of these horses.
A Fine Romance's dam was one of those mares: she raced 61 times, and then became a broodmare, but when she had a period of barreness, her destination would have been the slaughterhouse... whether or not she ever had another foal didn't matter to me.. I felt she deserved better than that..luckily for me, she blessed me with 3 beautiful babies, A Fine Romance was her last one.
This is going to be the 'Small Victory Fund'.
Fernie and I have spoken, and she is ok with this.
As kind and generous as Erin and COTH were last year with donating time and web space to the Aiden Auction, I would not presume to ask for more help from COTH - just I hope, tolerating this thread.
Normally, A Fine Romance's stud fee is $1,500 which includes a $300 booking fee/deposit and your first collection.
We are requesting that the minimum bid will be $400 to get things started. ALL OF THE WINNING BID ON THE STUD FEE WILL GO DIRECTLY TO FERNIE to assist her with rescuing these horses.
The only money that will be payable to me is the collection fee ($175) and shipping. I am waiving the deposit/booking fee. The contract is otherwise the exact same one as anyone else would get.
The bidding can start immediately, and the closing date for it will now be SUNDAY, FEB 29, 10PM EST
You may send your bids to me in a PT, and I will keep you updated when and if you are outbid.
Please remember that I am a computer idiot.. there can be no immediate updating, and we don't want to make anyone angry. It is for fun, and to raise funds for a wonderful cause.
The winning bidder will be notified, and when the cheque made out to fernie clears, or the paypal payment is made, I will send you a contract, and away we go.
The only proviso, is the one that I must approve the mare, and that she must be in sound breeding condition.
does all this make sense? Have I forgotten anything?
I will also post a notice about this on the breeding forum. I hope I have not violated any of the BB rules.. this is not meant to be advertising of any kind, only an attempt to help in a real way.
thank you for your support!

Can you post the website to your fine stallion so that it might generate some bidding interest?
I think you and fernie are godsends to the horseworld. I wish we could somehow clone Fernie!! I applaud you in your efforts for such a worthy cause - and if I had a broodmare or knew someone who did, I would bid in an instant. For now, I have to be content with the small donations that I can send her way. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You have reduced me to tears Fred.
Thank you so much.
If ever I get My recycling Tb Broodmares site up and running ,I would like to put "Two Bitter's",story on it.
As "A Fine Romance's".mum, her story should be told.
Thanks from The Old Ladies.

Fred, you are a gem. If I was into TB's, I would participate in a heartbeat. I will forward this info to every non-computer person I know. (There are a lot of horse people who aren't interested in the net).
As an aside, the local Standardbred rescue did something similar, and it was very successful. All the big breeding farms would donate a breeding to one of their stallions, all monies going to the non-profit. It also gave some of the little breeders a chance at a breeding that they would ordinarily not be able to afford.
So, anyone else with a Stallion willing to match Fred's offer?

I have a Dutch Stallion and would be more than willing to do the same. Even though he is only young and going for his approval in the next 2 months. He is an imported KWPN Stallion by Taxateur. He is a HUGE mover, very correct in every way, an excellent jumper. He has one of the best minds anyone could ask for. He can be seen on my site. Fred/Fernie if you would be interested I would be more than willing to do the same, with a minimum bid of $250 (shipping and collection paid by "bidder"). Let me know if you would like to use him too.

If that makes sense,I would hate for folks to not understand the terms of the offers being made here by the stallion owners.

thank you for your kind words, and thank you to everyone who has already sent me bids.
Sallylou, I think that is very generous of you. Thank YOU. I know that there are a never ending number of mares who need help, we can't help them all..but we have to try. Bless Fernie for not giving up in the face of the enormity of it all.
I do just want to clarify, and I am sure sallylou is making the same offer as I am.
The 'Stud Fee' - is the amount you are bidding, and that all goes to Fernie.
All that I will ask of you is to pay for the collection and the shipping of semen. Each collection is $175 and that is what it costs me, so I am not trying to make a penny on this. The shipping costs are also the responsibiliity of the mare owner and those are the same from Canada as within the US.. by Fed Ex.
Lord Helpus - thank you. The breeding would not have to be used in 2004.. it could be used whenever you want, as long as AFR is alive and breeding.
Riven, if you email me I will give you Fernie's mailing address - (thank You) - or if you bid, and win, you can keep that breeding to use with your beautiful filly someday!
dragonfyne - thank you for that generous offer.. since I am such a computer dummy.. I have no idea how to do what you are suggesting.. could we talk by phone?
Buying Two Bitter was a pivotal moment in my life, after that, everything changed...She was the most beautiful horse I had ever seen. I still love and miss that mare although she has been gone now for 12 1/2 years. But I know that she lives on in AFR and his babies, in my dear Lucy, now gone too, and her babies, and in Cricket and her babies...whenever a foal is born, dark, almost black, with a small star, and a brave, kind ,racing heart... I know she is with us still...
Thanks everyone.

OOOOOhhhhhhh............... I am in such a state of indecision!
I would love to use the handsome Fred, but I am not yet to the point of deciding whether or not to start "Rita" (ex Julia) or breed her.
People who know about these things --- HELP!
If I bred her in April, she would foal in March 2005.
Could I ride her this year until November?
If she foals in March and I wean the foal at 4 months (is that OK?) then she would be weaned the end of July. So I would miss about 6 months of training, right?
Are my time estimates pretty accurate or am I off in my timing?

LHU, you're pretty much spot on with your calculations. Your lovely mare can be ridden at the level to which she is accustomed until that time frame. I personally wean at 4-5 months and I'm right back to riding the mare. I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting "A Fine Romance" on many occasions and have a foal due by him in 98 days. Can't wait. He truly is beautiful.

Yes, but didn't Fred say:

quote:

So everyone that is thinking of maybe breeding, but not this year can still buy this and use it next year or the year after!!! At least that is how I took his earlier post on page 2 - but maybe he can reiterate the terms again...

Fred:
My stud, Fox Lair Star Legacy, is a 1998 Sec A Welsh/12.0 H/dapple grey with blaze and a couple of socks. He's by Liseter Star Jasper and out of Bristol Sun Kist. He's a half brother to Foxlair's Fascination, Deerfly, Liseter Clever Star, Smirf, Otteridge Twinkle - among others. He's a very cute mover and is just getting started under saddle. He has no foals on the ground as I'm really intending to start standing him until next year - but if anyone's interested, I'd love to be able to help out Fernie with her wonderful rescue efforts. It would have to be live cover only (he's in San Diego) and LFG.

hmmmmm, well, i have a papered tb mare that i have no plans for this year as i had some health issues and then sold my book and will be extremely busy with it in the forthcoming months. she is in upstate NY (Avon, anyone?)
i could (free)lease her out to someone who wants to pay for her board, care and the breeding fees....
she's a 16 hand plain bay with a white star, foaled once before, quite easily and produced a nice SWB cross......
she's sound, rideable, and has nice manners.

thank you Draygonfyne for clarifying the gender issue.. I never thought when I picked the name 'Fred' that people would think I am a man... how clueless am I??http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif but last time I looked under the layers of polar fleece.. If anyone has already made plans for breeding this year, that is not a problem. You can use your breeding to AFR as long as he is alive and breeding.. and since he is only 13 this year, I hope that is many years to come!
thanks everyone for helping Fernie in the work that she does. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

A funny thing happened yesterday with the girls.
My Hubby is an Auctioneer[part time at the moment, wifey will not allow him to do animals].
We had an auction at the house yesterday,in a barn about 50 ft.from the girls fence line.
Folks started arriving around 9am.The girls were quite interested in all the ogling folks.
Hubby was welcoming them over the loud speaker ect.ect.
At 10.am.he started his auction chant selling stuff.
It was so funny, the girls rushed up the hill and stayed behind the trees up at the farthest point from the barn. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

another update: as of 1.25pm est Friday, 2Dogs is the highest bidder with a bid of $975! thank you 2Dogs.
just a reminder to anyone who may have skipped or misread the earlier part of the thread, the normal stud fee is $1,500 which includes your booking fee and your first collection.
For this auction, the stud fee (that is the amount of the winning bid) will go ENTIRELY to FernieFox. You can either send her a cheque or do it through PayPal. When Fernie confirms that the payment has been received, I send you a contract, which is the same contract as you would normally receive.
I have waived any booking fee. so, NO BOOKING FEE, no hidden costs! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
the only thing you need to pay me is simply the collection fee which is my cost: $175, and the shipping.- which is normal for any breeding.
It is LFG, return service, and can be used at any time, if you are already booked for this year, as long as the stallion is alive and fit to breed.
Shipping can be either by air or by fedex, and there is no problem shipping semen from Canada to the US.
Thanks again to everyone who has bid. And a HUGE thank you to Erin and COTH for letting us do this!
Now, nhwr... where are you??http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I think I just had a major "brain Fart",when I brought the 2 girls to my house.
But thanks to everyone on COTH,they have not suffered any more, since in my care.
I do find myself praying a lot, that we will come up with a more suitable home for them.
In my book that would be somewhere with good pasture and shelter for them.I havent given up yet , there must be somewhere that can take them.
Once more from the bottom of my heart A Huge Thank you to all of you, especially Fred, for this fabulous offer of a service to A Fine Romance.

Thanks for all of the kind words about Dolly. She is one of the sweetest, kindest horses I've ever had the pleasure to be around and it's nice to know that you guys think she will be a good match with the wonderful Fred.
quote:

WOW!

vxf111, Dolly is half Thoroughbred, half Clydesdale. She's a registered American Warmblood, but I call her my Luke-Warmblood because her temperament is more Clyde than TB. However, she has her daddy's (TB) athletic abilities and can jump the moon. She is also a very nice mover and, to brag on her a little bit more, she scored a 14 (yes, that's a one and a four) on her dressage test at the very first Novice event I took her to.
She was bred by Glenn and Janet Wilson of Pine Top Farm in Thomson GA. She has a full brother, High Cotton, who events in Area III and looks exactly like her except he has three white stockings instead of four and is half a hand taller.
quote:
OMGiH, Don't let Spot or any of the other sabino queens see her DC, or they may make a midnight run to VA and you will be missing one fine looking mare!

Dezi, your post made me laugh because that is the reaction of just about everyone who sees her. My sister has been threatening for years to steal her away in the middle of the night and when she comes for a visit, I'm never quite certain if she's here to see me and Steve or Dolly.
Attached is another picture of her stadium jumping at her first Novice event. The picture quality is pretty poor, but at least you can get an idea of what she can do when she puts her mind to it.

Just wondering if the other auctions for the other 2 stallions have moved off this thread? Or are they already over?

Well, there is a baby, but it just hasn't made an appearance in the outside world yet. It is quite active, though, and we can see it moving a lot. Sometimes it looks like it is doing a tap dance in there.
I didn't know it was possible for a broodmare to get so huge, but Dolly has set a new record for us. I think someone secretly slipped into the barn in the middle of the night, smuggled her away, and replaced her with a hippopotamus. She is starting to get some edema under her belly and chest which is making her look even bigger, but our vet is not too worried about it. He examined her on Friday and said that he thought she was still a week away. However, I don't think she can possibly last that long. If she does, that baby is going to be big enough to ride as soon as it pops out.
Will post back as soon as the blessed event occurs.

whew, I am relieved, although I am sure poor Dolly is not.. thank you for keeping us informed, Canterlope, and good luck to you and Dolly and baby!
I don't know what happened with the other two stallions who were generously donated.. perhaps their owners would give us an update?

I am overjoyed to report that Dolly had a baby girl last night at 8:45 PM (a most civilized hour if I do say so). Both mom and daughter are doing great. The vet just left and everything is wonderfully normal.
Baby Girl is bay with a blaze and one white hind sock. She weighs in at about 120 lbs and is all leg. Her withers are already above my waist, so I think she is going to be a long, tall Sally. Attached is a picture of her in her favorite position. I tried to get one of her when she was not eating, but she's a little pig so it was impossible.
