Our ET baby by Bugatti from my mare Wintermaske arrived last night. She is almost a carbon copy of her mama -- black with a huge blaze and two hind socks. Unfortunately the ET mare rejected her thoroughly and in a very frightening and dangerous way.
I'll be raising her as a bucket baby. We got colostrum into her before taking the ET mare away and I've started her on Buckeye milk replacer.
Please send your prayers and good thoughts to this sweet baby. She will need them. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif

Thanks all. I had had a terrible feeling about this mare all along. She never accepted any kind of udder handling, no matter how quiet and patient. She would not allow the foal to nurse and went for her with teeth and or heels if she tried to get past the mare's shoulder. Even twitched an tranquilized it was all my vet and three helpers could do to get her milked out. She still would not let the filly nurse after her bag had been taken down and she should have been comfortable. Also the filly was frightened by her and didn't want any part of her udder with us coaching her.
The mare was also going after anyone who came into her stall in a very determined way. I got the umbilicus treated and an enema into baby while she was still down, but after that there was no way anyone could be in the stall unless the mare was on a leadline and being told in no uncertain terms that she was not to kill anyone.
I will put the baby with my two other mares and foals at least part time once she is strong so that she gets some horse skills. I know this is far from optimum, but leaving her with that crazy mare would possibly have killed her and would definitely have had the mares's attitude rub off on the filly. Just not worth it. This was definitely renting a uterus and nothing else!
Baby is smart. She just took the rest of the colostrum and is figuring out a bucket already. She is definitely a chip off her mama's block.
Now I am praying for not too many more surprises. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

How frightening! I had very good luck with the Buckeye product and an orphan. There is another thread going right now about an orphaned foal (RIP Paisely) and they turned it out with a mare that has a foal already and she has adopted it. I know that is an exceptional situation, but it happened to me too. My orphan was adopted by another mare with a foal 5 weeks older.
In my situation, it did not happen right away. The orphan was turned out with the other mare and foal at about 6 days old (orphaned at 1 day). I really watched the first couple of days, worried about her being hurt (although the mare was very gentle) and also hopeful the mare would adopt her. Things were peaceful, but no "adopting" behaviour. THen, after about 10-14 days together, orphan a bucket baby, one day the orphan would not drink her milk from the bucket and I panicked - thinking all kinds of things were going wrong -they were not though. Mare and foal had finally "gotten to know" each other well enough, and the OTHER foal (who had been possessive about "her" mom) had gotten more adventurous/wandering and lo and behold - mare was letting the filly nurse.
So I will keep fingers crossed for your foal too. It is a shame about the mare, but I have to say it would have really scared me. I think you definitely needed to pull the foal off of her.
Good luck, blessings, prayers and jingles.

Yes, and I'm already so tired from this foal watch that I can't see straight.
Baby is not drinking as well and is getting dehydrated. Vet is coming to give IV fluids and tube with milk replacer. If we can just get through the next few days, I think we'll be okay, but I hope you guys will keep jingling until then.
I think we will call this tiny dancer Ballerina. That name will fit her. And she really is the clone of Winter as a baby, but smaller. Same slightly dished face and little pointed ears. Same neckset. maybe leggier, which is nice.

That is horrid the mare rejecting her like that! Friends of mine run an orphan/broodmare care facility and successfully raise several orphans a year. But it is exhausting! They are there round the clock with the orphans. Best of luck to your baby.

I saw on the germandressage.com site that a mare had twins, and the mom is nursing both little ones. Maybe one of your mares will let this baby nurse. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

Hi all,
Baby got IV fluids and glucose last evening and that seems to have helped tremendously. She is now drinking readily from a bucket and goes to it in between my every two hour visits for feeding. I measure what she has consumed from the bucket every two hours and watch on the barn camera so know that she has started drinking on her own. She is bright and bouncing around the stall. I'd like her poop to be a bit more normal, but it is not terrible, so figure I am lucky.
ET mare supposedly had had a foal. No telling why this happened, but I am sure that I did the right thing in keeping this baby from being savaged. ET center is sending a trailer to take her back sometime today. I will be glad to see her out of here. Interestingly the baby does not answer at all when she whinnies, but when two of my mares call, she nickers at them.
I plan to try baby out with one of my mares who has a foal -- but not until the baby is a bit stronger. It is already hot here, and I can't risk having this baby run around to the point of exhaustion. In a week or so I think she will be ready. In the meantime, my open mare Rubizza (baby's granny) is in the field that abuts the foal's stall and has been hanging out a lot with her head in the stall. They may be able to bond. Many choices here. I'm just trying to figure out which will be safest for the munchkin.
All your jingling has literally brought tears to my tired eyes. The COTH community is the best. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

We keep going up and down. This PM baby has pretty bad runs -- probably because she is drinking her milk replacer so well. I feel like I'm walking a tightrope.
Hoping baby Ballerina and I don't fall off.
Her grandma Rubizza has spent the day with her head over the door into the baby's stall encouraging her with soft nickers and nuzzles. Baby is too scared to go close to her, but when I take her to Rubi, Grand mama nuzzles her and licks her. I think that if we make it through a week, Rubi will be a very kind and watchful granny to her. It is so sad that her surrogate mother frightened her so much.
Please do keep those jingles coming. We need them. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif

I am crying as I type this, so please forgive typos.
The baby crashed this morning and I rushed her to the vet school. She had rallied yesterday and was eating really well and even playing last night and very early today. The she suddenly developed rampant diarrhea and a temperature and refused her milk replacer.
The vet in charge is the same vet who saved Ballerina's real mother Wintermaske when she had a terrible accident and awful wound as a baby. I am so thankful that he is on the case. She is getting fliuds, antibiotics, etc, etc. I should know more tomorrow. Her joints were not swollen, so maybe we will have caught this in time.
Please keep jingling. This little filly is so very sweet and so beautiful. I don't want to lose her. Her Granny is standing outside her stall waiting for her to come back. Well, little ballerina has severe pneumonia. One lobe is completely filled. She is on antibiotics, getting some IV nutrition, and was given fluids, so isn't dehydrated anymore. She is brighter and more active and drinking the milk replacer well. They think she aspirated some liquid, but I can't figure out how or when.
They are very guarded in their predictions. Basically, we should know in the next 3-5 days whether it is likely that she will recover or whether we are heading down a dead end road. I am going to give this little girl every chance to fight this thing. She is in very good hands. If she is at all like her mama (and I know she is), she'll fight back and get better if there is one iota of a chance for her.
They don't have the fecal results back yet, so we don't know if the diarrhea in from an infectious source or not. So she is in isolation. I can go and see her, but can't go into the stall and touch her. That is killing me.
I'm trying to be as strong as little Ballerina needs to be. But I'm having a hard time keeping my chin up. All your jingles may be doing ME even more good than they are doing our baby. Thank you all. I am speechless with gratitude for the kindness you have all shown me.

Hi Mary Lou:
My colt was born with a cleft palate. My mare unfortunately had toxemia and died within 24 hours. We were faced with trying to find a nurse mare while at the same time bottle feeding this little guy. We didn't know initially that he had a cleft palate and he too developed a severe pneumonia from aspirating milk. We found a nurse mare and kept him on her for only 10 weeks because being a Belgian mare was a huge milker and as much flowed out his nose as went down to the stomach. They didn't hold out much hope for him obviously. We will be celebrating his 17th birthday on June 10th. He still has a cleft and his name quickly went from "The Flying Scotsman" to "The Flying Snotsman" but all things considered, these little ones are stronger than we give them credit. Good thoughts coming your way.

Heather -- I am so sorry about your mare. To lose any horse is awful, but I know how much it must have meant to have a schoolmaster and then lose her.
I have not heard anything else yet. I'm hoping to get the preliminary fecal report soon to rule out some grim possibilities. I really doubt that the diarrhea is infectious -- more likely related to the milk replacer, stresss and low immune system.
I have a friend who was going over to visit the little girl this PM. She was muttering something about sprinkling holy water on her. I'll take anything that might help. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I know this is tearing you up. I will keep you and Ballerina in my thoughts. Hopefully she will recover quickly and come home to the farm where she can be loved on by you and her granny! Thanks for keeping the BB posted, I'll be looking for good news. You hang in there and please let us know if we can do anything to help.

Update --
Ballerina was much brighter and sassy enough yesterday PM to lose her catheter. She is drinking tons of milk replacer and bouncing and bucking around her stall.
They x-rayed her lungs and she has very severe filling in one lobe. They also tapped her hocks because they were worried about very slight filling and want to stay ahead of any sepsis. They injected antibiotics into the hocks, as she was too active to flush them. They will flush if needed later. A culture will be done of the hock fluid so that we know what we are dealing with.
I am going to see her his PM. Hoping to see a bright baby and still hoping for some good luck and miracles. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif Thanks to everybody for the nice comments on this little girl. She is so sweet and so beautiful. I hope that I get to keep her in my life after all this horrible luck.

hi ml:
well, you know how i feel and all the prayers going ballerina's way, and your way! i did make it to see her yesterday, and vet that escorted me back to her stall was kind enough to sprinkle (lots) of the holy water that had been brought back from lordes france for me some three years ago, by a friend. i am not (too far from being) catholic, but i have been saying my prayers to st. francis (st. of animals) and st. anthony (saint of miracles). i hope everyone out there will ad those two saints names to their prayers, i truely believe it will help! it helped in my time of stress and disbelief with my mare, who by the way, was in the same stall as ballerina. hopefully, she will be out in as many days too (8 to be exact). she looked groggy yesterday, but otherwise good. the vets repeatedly said that this little girl does not know she is sick. she was up and walking and looks bigger than 2 days ago. keep the jingles coming!, it must be working.
ps: the vet that sprinkled the holy water on her poll, told me he was graduating today, and that he would never forget this request. i want to thank him for actually doing it! : )
my thoughts are with you and ballerina...i just love her so much!

I'm very late catching up on news here...
Mary Lou, Ballerina is gorgeous. She has a beautiful face, poll connection and neck. Can't wait to see the rest of her. I'm adding her to my nightly prayers for a strong recovery. You're right in that you never know what's going to happen with ET recipients. They sure are different from the mares we raise and handle here. I've never met one that was as loving as my broodmares. They just aren't handled and are valued only for their uterus. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Your case is one of MANY that I have heard.
I've been waiting to see a Buggati foal as I'm considering breeding my Ideal mare to him.
Keeping you and Ballerina in my prayers!

Pat,
Thank you for the prayers -- the more the merrier. I had planned two more ET's this year, but crazy weather up north where Winter is and crazy follicles down here with her mama made me give up those plans. Now I am so glad that I didn't do them. This whole experience has cured me of ETs, until and unless I have my own recipients that I know and can trust to take care of their babies.
I should hear from the UF vet later today. In the meantime no news is good news. Gut feeling wise (and my gut feelings are usually spot on), I am very very hopeful. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifhttp://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifhttp://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifhttp://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifhttp://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ballerina has air movement in her bad lung. They may let her come home in a week. She is drinking more milk replacer than any foal they have ever treated. Still waiting for the final culture on the fecal -- which seems to be clostridium, but the vets all feel that she is over the hump and on the way back up.
I read about clostridium diarrhea in foals today. It is seen in foals between 12 hours and 7 days of age and is quite dangerous, often fatal if not caught quickly. One article says that mares can carry the bacteria and pass it on in their colostrum. That may explain why the filly got so sick despite getting lots of colostrum that we milked from the ET mare. The scary thing is that the mare may be used again and may pass along the same thing again. If she did this before, had a deathly ill foal and perhaps got mastitis when the baby quit nursing, that may explain some of her horrible attitude. It is a mystery, but a very interesting one.
Miraculously, we have gone from a guess that Ballerina would not likely survive to one that she will mend. I am so grateful for all that my own vet Randy Emmons and the UF vets, Dr McKay and Dr Ryan have done for our tiny dancer. I may get to see her grow up after all.
Tears of joy are flowing freely here. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

Great news Home Again! Will keep the hopeful & helpful thoughts coming your way.
I've often wondered why they will use "just any ole mare" as an ET recipient. Considering how important the job is, I would think they would want excellent moms in peak physical shape with a great health and immune systems. Considering the expense of the whole process it doesn't make sense to skimp on things with the "birth mother". But I have yet to see any ET programs that do that.
I have considered ET myself and always thought I would use one of my own girls, just to be safe and comfortable. Now I know I will.
See, your dancing little filly is already making her mark on the world and teaching us valuable lessons!
Take care and don't forget to rest up! She'll be home soon!

Mary Lou,
Thought you might like the words to this song!
Tiny Dancer by Elton John
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums
But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can't hear me
When I say softly, slowly
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
