I have a little 5 acre mini farm and am thinking of foaling out my mare myself (with helpful horsey friends) this year. however, my stall for foaling is only about 13 x 18, is this going to be a problem? Be honest! my mare is 16.2 and fits in the stall portion just fine. This will be her 4th foal.

What is your weather like? In good weather, you might want to just foal in a clean, grassy paddock if you can put some spotlights on it. I've probably done 20-25 foals like this. In bad weather or if this isn't an option, your stall should be ok. I've usually had 12x24 but in one barn I only had 10x 20 and it was fine. My mares were about 16 hands.

I have regularly foaled my mares in 10 x 12 stalls with no issues. Would LIKE a couple bigger ones, and hope to get some built in a separate small barn, but they were fine in the 10 x 12. Normally only leave mare and foal in stall for a couple days, and not all days long, then they are turned out til foal is weaned.

I have a 5 acre mini farm too in FL... I have one 12 x 24 stall that I got to use for the first time this year to foal mares out, prior to that, my stalls are 12 x 14 and did just fine. The extra space is nice, but they were ok with the smaller stalls... (and my mares range from 15.2 hh to 17.0)

I agree, your stall is fine!

It seems to me no matter how big your stalls are when the mare decides to go down to foal she gets her hind end as close to the wall as she can.
It's The Rule.

Problem? 13' x 18' is a taj-mah-stall!

My mares have foaled out just fine in 12 x 12 stalls, although I just recently bought two new 12 x 16's. The important thing is to be present at foaling, because, as Fred said, no matter how big the stall is, the mare always seem to go down with her butt against a wall!
