View Full Version : Truck throwing EGR code

I have a 97 F250 I use mostly to haul my horse trailer. Recently the check engine has been flashing on when going uphill. Ran the codes and it's the code for EGR valve.

I've seen some info out there that replacing the sensor is not a solution bc the code is related to the carbon build up in the fuel injection system and the only way to address it is to have the system cleaned by a mechanic ($400).

The truck is running fine and shows no other symptoms so I'm hesitant to spend the $400.

Has anyone had any experience with this code? What did you end up doing?

Run a can of Seafoam thru the tank and see if it helps. Seafoam is FABULOUS STUFF!!!!

My husband says it is probably a vacuum leak (assuming this is a gas engine truck?). He says your mpg will likely be down, but otherwise looking at the light is probably the worst part. Good luck.

This:yes: seafoam will clean the injectors but won't solve the problem.

This seafoam will clean the injectors but won't solve the problem.

When I had gunked up injectors, it worked for me!

EGR valve. You could also try cleaning it.

It's worth a try! But I always try the cheapest fixes first! LOL
