Thank you all. I was kinda waiting to post about this until I had the necropsy results back. Bottom line is that my baby went from being fine, into a neurologic coma in less than 24 hours.
Friday night, my BM brought him out to the ring where I was teaching to have me inspect a boo-boo - it was a very superficial cut from a kick - told her to clean it out and slap some goo on. She says after dinner when she went to put him out he was sleeping - which is normal for him to nap after meals. When I came out Saturday morning, he was out flat in his paddock - I thought he was dead at that point. once I woke him up and actually got him up, I couldn't get him to walk so I brought his pasturemate in to the barn and got my husband and BM and called the vet. Gut sounds were good, no temp, good color, and not dehydrated - just could barely get up and couldn't walk.
Vet arrives and goes over him. We decided to take him to Cornell. It's kinda hard to load a horse that can't stand, so we rolled him onto a tarp and dragged the tarp onto the trailer. He survived the ride (I wasn't sure he would), and they immediately took him into xray (well as soon as they could sedate and drag him onto the xray table) with thoughts of it being wobblers or some sort of trauma to the spine given that there were no other clinical symptoms.
Xrays showed nothing, and they had to call in a specialist to do the spinal tap given that it was a Saturday. It's kinda blurry, but the normal tap reading is I believe 8, and his was 105. I had gone home after they did the xrays as I couldn't do anything there, and I had alot of finishing up to do at home for a schooling show I was hosting on Sunday. The vet called with the tap reading at about 7pm, and asked what I wanted to do. He was being pumped with anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and whatever else they would give a horse that could possibly have EPM, WNV, EEE, or rabies. I said that if he was stable, I wanted to give him a chance and we agreed that 24 hours would be the point where we would reassess - unless he started to go downhill. She said she could try some steroids and I guess the biggest problem was his inability to stand.
At 6:30am Sunday morning I got the call. After the Dex, he had shown a glimmer of hope by standing for about two hours. He was standing, but not there - he didn't respond and he couldn't see, he just stood. Then he went back down and into a deep coma. It was time.
He had been innoculate to the hilt (WNV, EEE, Rabies, Tet, etc.) and thus they needed to do a necropsy - after they get his brain back from the rabies test - so it will be a few days before I find out why. Bottom line: some form of aggressive encephalitis - could be a mutant strain. The mosquitos have been HORRIBLE here since the two hurricanes which is the cause.
It's times like these when I just want to crawl into a hole.

I am so very sorry. I remember how we felt when Andy died as a yearling.
Have they ruled out some other things such as moldy corn poisoning or botulism? I guess those wouldn't raise the spinal tap numbers, although I don't know.

BTW I attended to a gelding who died of rabies (we thought bad colic)- his symptoms were colic like and then rear-end paralysis. Very frightening- he was in a large herd, all the other horses received boosters and no others contracted the disease.

I went to the link mention by Lord Helpus and I hold my breath because last year I lost a 5 months filly the same way !!!!!
We found her in the pasture and she got not get up. I thought it was colics but when we got up after a long time, her movement was not coordinated.
Vet gave her antibiotics and she stayed there but she had a paresie. No marks of anything.

Has Cornel ruled out Botulism poisoning? There are very few things that will kill a foal/horse in 24 to 48 hours, and Botulism is one of them. Its basically the same symptoms. Foal cannot stand and is very unco-ordinated, no fever, and no other signs of trauma. I lost a filly this summer as well, and needless to say all my horse will be vaccinated against it. Leena, I suggest you do the same.
I'm very sorry about your loss. Unfortunately I do know just how you feel.

Oh Shawnda really !!!!!! Oh my god !!! I am really sorry for you ! Those foals take so much of our hearth...
They will be du for vaccines sometimes this falls but I was waiting for my mares to get to theirs 6th pregnancy months.
In my pain last year, I got to a website in France talking about a mysterious disease with all the symptoms my filly has and since they have few informations regarding this issue they were asking all the breeders to declare any strange death immediately.
I might go back and check this out again.

Thank you all, this just sucks.
Just to clarify:
He was in a coma, not showing any brain activity other than heartbeat and breathing and it wasn't fair to prolong the inevitable. Any of the possible suspects for infection would have made it really ugly if we had kept him going to the end, for which the results would have been the same.
I'm trying to look at it as Mother Nature's way of culling my herd, and those lost weren't meant to be. It just sucks that I've lost two wonderful yearlings in the past 4 years.
Mandarin was 28, Annie was 18, the two uborn foals just weren't meant to be, but the freaking yearlings??? Both were innoculated to the hilt - they say that Potomic vaccine(what I lost Amanda to) isn't 100%, but usually it doesn't kill them - euthanasia for extreme founder from the high temps is usually the case, and Eric going from perfectly fine into a nerulogic coma within 24 hours - what the F??? I did everything right, and spent $2000 additional at Cornell, and he's still gone. Maybe someone is telling me I need to keep Woody and keep him as a stallion - or someone is telling me to throw in the towel on the whole breeding thing. Can't do that - Yak goes to sex school next week. Things like this do make one reassess things though.
Guess I have to take my own advice and breathe, put one foot in front of the other, and try not to trip.
I just got a call from Cornell wanting to know if I wanted his halter, and to tell me that the bill wasn't quite $2000 - like I really care at this point. I asked to have the Dr. call me so I can ask the questions I couldn't before.
Does anyone have a recipient mare for ET so I can get my HOF baby and another Fred baby in 2006? Kidding, sorta.

Oh Silly Mommy, I am so sorry. Call them back, take his halter- you will want it later. It's so hard when you breed them, you birth them, you train them , you show them, they are successful and wonderful and everything you want and then they leave you in a heartbeat for no reason at a time that is absolutely unexpected. Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of my two year olds accident. He made it about 24 hours. I still think about it often. Now mostly I am angry thinking I should have done something differently and that I did the wrong thing with treatment. You know, I too did everything possible. Sometimes letting go like you did is the best thing. Getting bills was very hard for me too, not because of the money but because of the reminder. I am so very sorry and my thoughts and prayres are with you.

As for a recipient mare for ET, we have a 6-year old recipient mare… Vanilla… she came from Dr. Hurtgen’s herd… she is in foal with our Lord Sinclair ET … but I have no plans for her in 2005. The problem is that she’s a Belgian mare and may not be what you looking for because of her size (and concerns that the bigger draft mares are really not ideal as recipients for Warmbloods, e.g. their milk is to high in calcium, etc.) On the upside, she is healthy, very sweet, easy to get in foal and by all accounts she is a good mother. I don’t know where you live, but if you are on the East coast and can provide a good home for Vanila you’re welcome to use her for a year.

Thanks for the offers on ET recipient mares, but I'm afraid that it just isn't economically feasible given the circumstances (Cornell bill), I just am so disappointed that I have to wait two years for another Fred baby - just as disappointed that I have to wait another year for a HOF baby - the mind just started rambling at ideas to get it all done at once http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

I lost a vaccinated 3yo to EEE 11 years ago. Still it breaks my heart to think about him. The only comfort I can give is that nothing like it has occurred in my herd since. The vet stated it was either an extremely virulent strain that year or he had a minimal immune response to the vaccine. Eric's symptoms sound identical. Hopefully you will never have to deal with anything like this again.

Silly Mommy, The thought of you having to find this colt down and then to go through all you did to help him makes me feel sick. I am thinking of you tonight and anxious to hear what the results of the autopsy tell you. Atleast if you can learn some sort of cause...

Our deepest condolences, Silly Mommy. The Little Prince had accomplished so much in his life, and you were so justifiably proud of him, that it was a joy to follow your progress. I'll treasure those images, and I hope that soon you'll be able to enjoy them, too.
He was fortunate to be in the hands of a loving owner who did everything possible for him and who made that most difficult decision when the time was right. I know he has found peace. I hope that you find comfort soon.

Silly Mommy, I am very sorry about your loss. What a tragedy, to lose one like that! I hope they find something definitive, so you won't always be wondering what took your special boy.

Sillymommy, I'm too new here to have known Eric, but I am very sad for your loss. It's so awful to have them fine one day and, without warning or reason, gone the next.
Vaccinations stack the odds in your favor, but they aren't 100% effective. You did everything you could for Eric. Unfortunately, sometimes you can do all the right things and still it comes out wrong. That's when you know it simply was meant to be.
I'm sure he was very loved and knew it. And it doesn't sound like he suffered at all. Just took a nice nap and left.

When I first started breeding horses a good friend of mine said "Breed them and weep". Far too often we do. I had to put down a yearling colt a couple of years ago and know how heartbreaking it is. You are in my prayers.

Terribly, terribly sorry to hear your bad news, Silly Mommy. I lost an 18 month old filly two years ago under very similar circumstances. We had to humanely destroy her about 24 hours after her symptoms appeared. She was eventually diagnosed with a severe EEE infection, despite being vaccinated right on schedule. The pathologist said she had just not developed a strong enough immune response to the vaccine, or she was hit with multiple infected mosquitos.
Because I do all my own vaccinations,I felt horribly guilty as well as sad, believing it was somehow my fault. It wasn't until the following year when two more horses in the local area died of EEE, despite being innoculated on schedule by the local veterinarian, that I finally accepted that it was simply fate.

No, but ask Fred about the Grand Prospect mare that should be heading to the Northern Territories if all goes well.

Sabra,
I hope I didn't start this thread prematurely. When I read about Eric on TMP and then read the link on TBB, I knew that your COTH friends would want to know.
If it is any comfort, the outpouring of condolences from all over show how many lives you and Eric and the rest of your horses (ane even the lazy SOB of a BM http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif) have touched. We feel like we know you and The Little Prince and that your loss is our loss.
May the New Year bring you a lot of joys that you will be able to share with us. I will be in Ocala to see the Yak's Florida debut and the beginning of the fame that his talent will bring him and you. I will have a bottle of Ariel champagne ready to toast Mandarin, Yak, good times past and good times to come.
Life is not always dark. Give the girls and boys equine, canine and human big hugs and let them all comfort you.

Please let us know what the results end up being. It's hard to lose any equine... but these young ones just tear you up.
As far as WNV goes... this seems to be going off into different strains like the PHF. We've had a few cases with clients at the clinic the past month or so. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

LHU - no biggie, I just wasn't ready Sunday, or Monday morning for that matter, to answer questions as I didn't have definitive answers. I shared on one other board and in a PT here (and of course had already spoken with Gail), knowing word would eventually get around, but there is a much smaller community in boogerland and thus more closeknit.
We'll have to get organized and exchange contact info before the snow flies!

Silly Mommy, this is a horrible thread to read. It is just an absolute shock. I am so sorry for your loss. I wish it would have turned out another way.
I don't know you, and I obviously never met your colt...but from your posts and pictures, I felt like I know you both.
I hope he is having fun over the rainbow bridge...
