View Full Version : How many of us have duplicate horse names?
War Admiral
Oct. 27, 2005, 09:15 AM
I just noticed that AKDragooPhoto's TB is named George. Lord Helpus' TB (one of them anyway) is also named George.
I have a TB Avery; GoodBooie (who hasn't been posting much lately) has a QH Avery.
How many other duplicate horse names do we have on COTH?
Yes, I'm bored! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I have a Jesse who is male (people seem to assume Jesse is going to be a mare so I have to say "No, like Jesse James")
I think that's a pretty popular name but again, often for mares.
The rest of my crew: Folly, Maus (pronounced "mouse"), Nique, Ginny, Imp, Shaya, CJ, Chaser and Ditto. Some common ones in there.
I'm bored too. And my work day has barely begun!

I used to have Artie (Artwork), but I sold him and now he's Divot (Glen Divot).
I also had a Blair (Purple Reign). I didn't name her either of those, and I doubt there are many Blairs out there.

Good thread!
I have geldings named Trooper, Stetson and Aristotle (bet he is the only one!)
And mares named Daisy, Patches, Anya, Maggie and Faith
Has anyone ever thought about naming their child something that you have already 'used' on a pet??! I loved the name Savannah so much I named my first dog that when I was 12 years old. She died young (at 5) and I still love that name. Would it be wierd to use that name for a daughter ? Another name I love is Scarlette, but Im saving it for a daughter now matter how much I am tempted to name a mare or filly that!

Almost all the horses I've owned have had "people" names:

I have a mare named Tomboy, which I thought was a very unique (and awful) name when I bought her. But I am almost positive there is someone else who posts on here with a gelding named Tomboy. And I have seen an ad for another gelding named Tomboy. I really don't understand the geldings named Tomboy, since a tomboy is a girl that acts like a boy. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
The rest are Inca, Dyani, Whimsical, Summer and Wylie. Will be shocked if there is another Dyani.

Yes, sorta. My fantastic Germ Shep was named Akela but I tended to call her Kate a lot (she had a lot of nicknames). I planned on naming a daughter Katlynne but my sister-in-law also loved the name and her daughter was born first so she scooped the name. Her daughter didn't mind having the same nick name as my dog. She knew they were all loved. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
My mom's dog was named Jadyn and her neighbour's daughter was as well. The child thought that was the coolest.
My horses are named Sham (my choice)(furlong, what is the Sham in your barn like?), Tiger Lillie (she came with the name Lily and I didn't get around to changing it fast enough so it sorta stuck. I know of dozens of horses named Lily. Kinda wish I'd registered her as "Pictures of Tiger Lillie" like I'd first planned but I chickened out in case someone actually noticed at the wrong time and took offense.). I didn't name any of the others: Gypsy, Cardero (I love this name the best out of all of them!), McFly, and Troy.
I have also owned a mare named Stormy who got nicknamed Phil (short for "the filly") once we bought the gelding named Stormy (who was differenciated by "Big Storm"). There was MyGuy (affecinately known as "The Old Man". Sis owned him from 2 til he died at 31), Little Red, and HalfPint.

Fessy's Mom: There's a palomino mare where I board named Barbie. The BO rescued her at auction a couple months ago, and we didn't have a clue what her name was. I can't take credit for Weird-Horse-Name Isaac. If FairWeather hadn't have named him something cool, he would have been Patrick (all of my horses have people names - so that way, people will think I have friends when I say I spend all of my time with them). Poor Isaac always gets his name mixed up - he was Jacob, Josiah, and Ezekial for the first six weeks at my barn. Weird people.

And, baby story. While pregnant with daughter, my husband and I were looking for a simple, classical name. In the middle of the night one night, I lept up and cried out with joy, "SALLY! I'm surprised there isn't another Cherokee in this list.
Cherokee, Rajah, Smiley, Malarkey, had a Middie (Midnight) but put him down.
In the past:
Cosmo, Coach, Calliope, Sedona/Perrin, Pepper, Razzy, Sparkles, Jake, Envy, Peppermint (different horse from Pepper). I'm surely forgetting someone.
New horse on his way. What shall I name him? I like 'Keeper'.

Sort of off-topic... my friend and I have talked about the importance of a wholesome barn name... "Imp" is just that and more... "Sly" has snuck out of halters, stalls, etc... "Folly" reminds me that she was MY folly, and so on.
I have joked that my next horse will be named NeverNeedsTheVet or CheapToKeep. Does anyone else have horses that have lived up to their names, for better or worse?

Other horses at my trainers barn include:

This has been quite entertaining to read through.
KrazyTBMare: My mom has a TWH mare named Layla. She came to us as Lady, which then became Ladybelle which then became Laylabelle and now usually just Layla or Lady.
I've got a TB mare named Callie. I named her Catalina when I got her, but there already was a Khat (Khatango) and a Lina (Angelina) in the barn so my nickname option was Cali like the state but everyone spells it Callie. Except my vet, who writes Calais on her records, which might give my mare delusions of exotic grandeur. Any other Callies?
We also have a mini mare named Princess, and her registered name is Majestic Princess Tigeen. Mini names crack me up. We had three other minis come to us with ridiculous registered names: Nicks Silver Dust Sandman (Sandy), Mystique Sierra Dawn Tigress (Tigger), and Trotting C Rowdy Prom Girl (Prom). The two minis we got to name were Justa Little Bit Rowdy (Bee Bop or Bitsy) and Heiress, although the vet always called her Aries.
I've also had a Savannah, a Frosty, and my first pony was named Spotty.

My first mare came with the name Tiffany (BIG Palomino) it didn't suit her so she soon became Goose and then soon after that Beasty (or shortened to "B" long story behind that one) this one was her name for our last ten years together.
I now have:
Lilly: TB/QH daughter of Beasty
Dante: PMU Appy/Arab/QH thought I'd see another one here
MareMare: Peruvian Paso and another long story!
Squirt: Breeding stock paint
Squirty is a new one to my herd a weanling and I think requires a new name. None of the posted ones seem to suit her yet but maybe I'll see one I can steal!

We named our horse, a dark bay TB, G.J. Jackson after my favorite groom when I was growing up. We bought him in July. When I went back to Buffalo in August, I went to look at my friend Jen's new horse...a big dark bay that she'd named Jackson after G.J. Jackson, too! She bought him in July. Neither of us knew we had new horses until we saw each other in August, let alone had named one Jackson! Truth is stranger than fiction.

I've ridden a Pinney (Scarlet Pimpernel) and a Belladonna, and my sister may be leasing a Boysenberry. I'm sure there's another Elf in the world, and I know that there are lots of Bellas and Donnas, but I don't know how common the other names are!

Starlight, do you know where your boarder got the name? When I bought Starbuck, he was actually named Starbucks, because he's the color of coffee. (I think he's more the color of hot chocolate, but splitting hairs... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) Anyway, I'm a sci-fi nerd and Battlestar Galactica is one of my favorite shows, so I dropped the "s" and named him after one of my favorite characters.
Is that where your boarder got the name?
Oh, and BUCKLES? http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif I call him Starbs or Starbuckies when I'm in a silly mood, but generally he's just straight Starbuck. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
