HAHA. I did wear mine when I was a kid. It was so much cooler than the ugly plastic ones (at least in my 8 year old head... Now I realize how awful those ASTM helmets looked back then).

I was wearing my riding clothing and walked through a mall in a small town where my friend lives and everyone looked at me like I was crazy. When I went to NYC, I walked around in my riding clothing after coming straight from the barn and nobody looked at me strangely, two girls asked if my pants were Ralph Lauren, and one asked if my riding boots were Tory Burch!

This is proof that fashion designers/stylists have NO idea about safety and how things are designed. Bike helmets are designed for the specific types of accidents a cyclist will experience (flat trajectory, mostly top half of skull). Thus the helmets are thicker at the crown. Riding helmets are designed for a more vertical fall trajectory with impact toward the sides and back of the head. Hence the "mushroom" look.

It is well established that one can not interchange the two and expect the equivalent safety.

So funny, on my lunch break today I actually spotted a woman riding a bike wearing a hunt cap and did a double take. But like RAyers pointed out, not exactly gonna protect in case of a fall. Especially those hunt caps that don't even offer real protection while riding!

Not to mention the article's suggestion to hit EBay for a vintage hat. Because a 20 year old helmet is just what I want protecting my head in ANY fall.

I went to see the exhibit "The Horse" at the Museum of Natural History last year with some friends. Going in ahead of us was a women in possibly fake black britches and spotless tall boots. She sashayed in like she owned the place. We got a good giggle at that.

When I go out in my boots and breeches I get looks too. Like "Don't touch the merchandise, you may stain/shed on or spread dirt on it"

OMG - anyone using one of my old helmets would be in serious crap. 5 - 10 horses a day in those things. I finally bought a second one so they could have a day off they got so sweaty. Like buying used underwear. Totally grosssss!:eek:

Bicycle helmets are tested to see how well they skid across pavement.
Equestrian helmets are not.
Velvet, velveteen, and especially sueded helmets would grab and stop, rather than slide, if you go down and slide across the pavement. Bad news, it creates some nasty neck problems.

And yeah, eeeew, old sweaty helmet off eBay? No thanks...Maybe the one that someone bought for their kid, who tried it on once but never wore it.
