My OTTB's reg name is Little Bit Wet (http://community.webshots.com/photo/452711516PTdXmO).
His sire's name is NonWet. Huh?
No way that we were going to enter the show ring with that name, sounds like a porn flick http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

Lmao, Harmony's was Pokabout. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif No wonder she didn't win much of anything at the track with a name like that. ( Well, it is a combo of her parent's names, Dam was named 'About', but come on.)
Annie's is just Annie Pok, combination of her parent's names too.

Yup $48 whole dollars - gave the owner a $50 and asked for $2 change and said "get him off the track": is the joke I've always told. He was the best horse I've ever had!

Tejano's Sands. I think I have a speech disorder everytime I say it out loud. Her sire is Level Sands and dam is Tejano's Girl. Yeah, they were real original in naming her, I know. Phyllis changed it to Tejana before I bought her, which means "little Texan girl" or something like that. I thought the translation was cute so I kept it. Close enough to her registered name that I don't feel like I'm too drastic in changing it!

My first TB came with the name "Raveninthecavin" - spelled exactly like that. He was almost always in the money too, so I pitied the poor announcers at Hialeah! But his name was sort of fitting - he was solid black (technically dark brown/bay) without a lick of white on him anywhere. And from the days I tried to find him early in the morning before the sun came up, I could appreciate where his name came from!
My old QH mare was Erin O'Gates, kind of cute since she was born on St. Patrick's day and was by Bar None Gates. But her poor mother was "Hardtack's Wirecut". Poor old mare. No wonder her daughter was the most evil thing on the planet. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't think it's horrible, but I'm not fond of my horse's registered name: VIKING GROG
Not so bad, huh? But for an APPALOOSA???
His sire is Viking Prince (Vikingson (TB) x Princess Dawn M (App)). His dame is Hard Bounce http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif by Bouncer (App) x Apple Swizzle (TB) by Grog (Seabiscuit's half-brother).
So the logic behind the name is clear, but still. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I just call him "Erik" (Viking...he's chestnut(red)...)
I LOVED my previous horse's registered name: 16.3 of grouchy leopard App event horse named.... THUNDERBLAZER!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

K T M Sparkler.
Her dame was Little Sparkler so I see where that comes from but the KTM, no idea. It has nothing to do with where she was bred but it has to be someone's initials, who I don't know. I changed it to Make it Snappy, barn name Snap and it fits her perfectly. She snaps at the air when you groom her.... the BO is saying at least once a week it is the perfect name for her. Though I started by calling her Ginger Snap (apparently I though she was sweeter than she is), I had no idea it would turn out to be perfect. Oh, and she isn't fast at all.

When you name a horse something like "Biter" that's what you THINK OF when you're around her, they pick it up and, well, DO IT... so you're CAUSING the behavior...

Actually I named her Ginger Snap- barn name Snap before I ever brought her home or knew her much at all. We just found out after a few weeks of getting to know her how appropriate the name is. Believe me, she would snap (just bites air, never aimed AT anyone) no matter what her name is or how much you reprimand her. It is just something she does, I really don't think you can cause the behavior just by giving a horse a name. I also know a "Speedy" who certainly isn't.

Zen's Secret ReZen.
That's because his dam is out of Zen, a big TB sire in these here parts. His sire is Secret Counsel a never raced son of Secretariat. They called him Secret.
He only became Ted because someone decided adter a 30 second acquaintance, that he reminded her of Ted from the Mary Tyler Moore Show - whatever THAT means. But it stuck, and everyone called him Ted.
Beats Zen's Secret ReZen. His show name is Theodor, with an accent on the 'e' to make it look more continental. Theodor does mean gift from God, so even though I'm not religious, it turned out to be the right name.
Had I been naming him now, I would have called him Oberon ...sounds dark and brooding, but Oberon was King of the Fairies, and that describes my boy (not that I think he necessarily swings that way, just that he's elegantly boned, won't step in water, and is a big weenie).

I had a sale horse that had a name I thought wasn't so bad. I thought it was "Primitive Road" when I bought him. I got the papers and it was "Primitive Roll". Made NO sense to me!
One of my favorites was on a TB that won some races in Canada. His name was "Won By Default". The media could never figure out that it was his name, they all thought the race was actually won by default, not a horse with that name. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

Lets see...
A friend had an OTTB named Crispy Critter. I liked it, she did not.
I got an OTTB gelding named The Lords Club. Yuck! I now call him Tipperary Sweet William
I also got an OTTB filly named MeowMeow. I called her Skinny Minnie (because she was), and my clients that bought her now call her Dakota.
My competition horse is papered as Chevy Chase, but I just couldnt show him as that so I call him The Coachman, barn name Chase, The Chaser, Moose, Mooser (said with a lisp because it sounds endearing to me), Mooseman...
His full brother is registered as Comedy Central, barn name Cody.
A client just bought a black/white paint gelding that was papered as something Candyland. They've now called him Beauregard, Beau for short. But Candyland for a gelding? Hmm...
Oh and I have a Connemara/QH mare that has temporary registration papers with the Connemara Pony Society as Heidi's Red Fury (not a good lesson horse name), They'd called her Ariel and then someone else bought her and called her Jasmine (what's with the Disney reference?) and now I call her Tipperary Fiona. And no I was not going for the Shrek thing, I was going for the Irish theme.

My Canadian Horse: Poirier Calypso Jonquil
Now, in fairness to the breeder who sold him to me, the naming conventions for Canadian Horses don't leave you a lot of leeway in some areas - the first name must be the breeder's farm name, the second must be the sire's given name, and the last name must start with the letter assigned to that year. But even so - you'd think they could have found something that started with a J other than "jonquil". My guy is 16:2, over 1400 pounds, with feet like dinner plates, and jet black. It's hard to imagine anything less like a daffodil.
His call name when I bought him was Justin, and I kept it - it suits him. I'll never know why they had to get fancy with the registered name.

Although they've already been shared on the icky name thread, I will say once again that our registered miniature horses have had the worst names ever. Although we only got to name one of them (see Bitsy, below) so I suppose we can escape the blame.
First we've got Majestic Princess Tigeen, and her two daughters Mystique Sierra Dawn Tigress and Justa Little Bit Rowdy. We had a stallion, Nicks Silver Dust Sandman, and another filly Trotting C Rowdy Prom Girl whose dad was NFCs Rowdys Litigator (WTF?) They are just too long and ridiculous for how small the horses are.
My old QH was registered as Snooty Stuff by the Impressive Bum out of Bostons Punkin. My mom used to call her Impressive Punkin or Boston Bum but all the options were about as gag-worthy as her real name. I just showed her under Savannah, which was what she was called in the barn.

But my parents are threatening to start breeding horses.
And naming them all after Grateful Dead songs.
Actally, some of them aren't too bad. It's mostly the idea. They want me to marry a boy at the barn just because his horse is named "Shades of Gray" and they want to use her to get "Touch Of Gray".

(because he is "tough", but he is a big sissy, but I love him!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) His mommy died when he was 5 weeks old and was very very depressed (understandably so!) and finally pulled through that trauma, then a few months later the person that bred him let him have the run of the barn and he fell on the concrete and got stuck underneath a utility sink. He is 6 years old now and is still not a fan of concrete.

Since I am persoally responsible for one of the worst TB names ever (or at least in my opinion it was right up there), I can tell you that desperate people with too many babies and a few they really don't like all that much may have contributed to the problem. Especially if they don't think there is any way in hell the foal in question will ever make it to the races. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I admit it. I am responsible for Loose and Leaky.
It's awful, I know it. I take the blame.
His dam was an useless POS who couldn't run her way out of a wet paper bag. Her 3 year old had just about killed me from falling on me (he was a wobbler, only certain people weren't about to admit it), this one was shaping up to be just about as useless. And unlike every other foal on the property he just couldn't get the hang of the basic butt rope leading philosophy that even the dummy foal grasped. He would just stop and plant himself and then when his momma got too far away (10 yards), he'd bawl and pee! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Loose and Leaky. How could we not succumb to temptation?
So your horse might have the world's stupidest name, but there might be a story behind it that you will never know. Unless of course you happen to own a TB gelding named Loose and Leaky... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Glad to makae the connection. Honestly, though, only someone OLD as me who reads a LOT of British literature would KNOW this sort of thing -- you probably only thought of Fig Newtons, w hich is the ONLY thing most people associate with fig. And THAT reminds me of the oldl Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon series joke, where Rocky the Flying Squirrel says to Bullwinkle the dimwitted moose, "It's just a figment of your imagination"; Bullwinkle indignantly replies, "WHO'S a Fig Newton!!!"

John's registered name isn't too bad: Intrepid John. Shame that that whole "intrepid" part is wishful thinking. He's a bit of a chicken.
Gotta ran under the name "Gottagetouttahere." He did, too. Got right off the track, right into our barn, and most of the barn wishes he would get right out. His personality is an acquired taste.
The worst names I've ever heard are all horses that John ran against. There was a "My Favorite Scrub" and a "Fourleggedybeastie."

BTW, have you ever seen picture of Jack Straw and Jack Straw Jr? They are interesting looking horses. Even though they're TB's, they don't look like it.
Straw Bandit, my horse's sire, was supposed to be a mean SOB. I hear from one bunch that it was man made, and hear from another that it was just nature. My gelding is sweet. Opinionated but sweet. He takes care of me on the trail. That's what he sees as his job and he does it - and damn me, if my idea of taking care of me and his idea differ. He's pretty much going to do the thing he thinks is safe.
He's pulled me out of enough scrapes that I give him his due. He can be a monster but he's an ok boy. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

About a dozen years ago I was at a paint farm looking at one horse when a beautiful black and white colt caught my eye. I was thisclose to making an offer until the owner, very apologetically with a firm reminder that he didn't breed the horse and he bought it from a southern breeder, told me the horse's registered name, which I'll decline to repeat here but was, at best, racially insensitive. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif

I don't mind my guy's registered name -- From One to Sixty. If anything I might drop the "From" next year to make it a little shorter. It's a good name for timed events, anyway, lol.
But I like showing him under his racing name for a few reasons. One, he DID race, and I'm proud of that. (As they say around here, "Gotta represent!" http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif) Two, I like to think that if his old connections saw/heard the results anywhere, they would know it was him. In fact his old owner and trainers found us at the STB show this past weekend because they heard his name called over the loudspeakers. (I still keep in touch with the owner, but until then he hadn't been sure we were at the show.)
I'm not sure I would feel the same way if he still had the name USTA lists as his previous one -- The Flying Dentist. I don't even get that one... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Timber's second owner, of Timber Run Stables in NJ, gave him a much nicer name I think -- which I used.
A friend of mine renamed her Arabian, Baku. She's never, ever will show her horse in a breed show. Baku's registered name is Iceviper. (Yes, he's a grey.) My friend can't bother to say the registered name without great difficulty and gagging sounds.

I thought this would be an entertaining thread, with a few laughs. But it's just you NASTY folks INSULTING your horses and the (probably VERRRRY INTELLIGENT) people who named them. I can't read it.

Eqtrainer, I'm guessing the Buzzard's Bay you have is not an tb, or if he is, that's not his JC name?

My late QH mare's full sister has the registered name "Florence Louise". I have no idea where the name came from. Seems to have nothing to do with any names of other horse relatives. Perhaps she's named after a relative of the people who bred her.
What's even better was that she raced and I understand she wasn't bad -- it just seems a very unusual name for a race horse. I wonder if they call her "Flo"?
