View Full Version : DRAFT HORSE BOARD/THREAD

ChocoMare

Since us big horsey people were denied our own board, how 'bout we just use a really big thread to chat about our really big horses?

If you ride a draft or big draft cross (17 hands or larger), this is the thread for you. (No, I'm not being prejudiced against driving drafts but drivers do have their own board. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

My draft is a 9-year old, 18 hand Percheron named Tank. She may be big as a tank, but is sweet and very gentle. She's so sweet, the herd's monster pony, Muffin (11 hands), chases her around the field!

She gets to come home in about two weeks. I'll be measuring her this week to see just how big a Duett Draft saddle I'll have to buy (I'm suspecting a 40cm tree width).

Monstr himself is TB/Perch who's about 17.2. And all of him is that tall, it isn't one of those shark-fin set of withers that makes him that big.

Tee hee, there's a new WB that just moved into a local barn who's supposed to be http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif 18 H!!! I walked up to him in the pasture last weekend. Nope, not even close.... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

well alrightly then.

My guy is belgian/appy (dunno where the appy went though, he just got the appetite!) 5 yrs old, well... 6 in april.

Yes big babies aren't they? Mine is TERRIFIED of new people, ends up scaring the vet etc in the process, because he gets all puffed up and cowers in the corner but ends up looking huge and vicious! I'm guessing this is a result of the first barn i had him at in Seattle, where the mexican barn workers were very good about hiding the fact that they were roughing up the horses *@(#&*@&$(*$(@&*^$# idiots. I moved him out of there as soon as i had suspicions, but i think the damage had been done, oddly enough, he is a complete love with anyone he knew before that happened (like my dad, who only see's him once in a blue moon)

Anyone else have "draft legs"? whenever i get on a horse with no drafty heritage, i feel like i'm riding a twig. lol.

ok, I can't resist this one... My guy will be 5 on the 5th of May, His name is Jewelius and he's a Clyde/TB cross that stands 17.2hh right now. He's a PMU baby that I bought when he was 6 months old and he's doing great http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif. I'm not too sure where the thouroughbred in him is seeing as he looks sooooo much like a clyde, just like Chrome On I'm thrilled to have him. I have an aged (best guess between 15-20 years old) percheron mare. We know she was a PMU mare at one point, but we dont know her history before that. She was sold from the PMU ranch to an individual that thought he might farm with her, but quickly found out that was too much work and left her, neglected in the field.

He sent her to auction when she started "looking awful" (she was very wormy, had a uterine infection and was still nursing a 2 year old filly and was quite thin). We bought her at the auction, honestly with the intentions of taking her home and putting her down. Her eyes were "dead". She had also foundered at some point in her past, but we're not sure when.

Got her home, started feeding her, I dont think she's stopped since! She's at a good weight now (about 1950 lbs) and has started building muscle. She's about 16.2 hh, and about the same width!

She's obviously been driven before and seems to have a good work ethic. I've been on her 3 times, the first time she was soooo confused, kept looking back at me like "what are you doing way up there?". Second time, we managed to steer around the ring... third time she was feeling quite spunky and actually trotted a bit (not that I asked).

She also suffered some abuse in the past, she's terrified of whips or quick arm motions above your head, but we're slowly working through this.

She's not 100% sound, but she seems to be sound enough to eventually become my husband's trail horse, so that's good enough for us.

Now if only some of the ice will melt and the mud will dry up, I could continue her training.

The hubby and I have just started our Clyde breeding program, one mare hopefully due this summer, the other waiting to meet her stud muffin. More mares to come this season. I ride a 1/4 perch, 3/4 TB. He is a project horse, past abuse case, has a heart of gold and is super special...worth the time. I have hopped on the full draft mares from time to time...a nice break in between training to harness. Always have had a thing for the full drafts though, family raised them (Belgians) although my father is quite happy with his monster PMU paint/Belgian cross team as well.

I have what I was told is a Belgian Draft/ TBX. I believe the Belgian part. Not so sure on the TB. He is 15.3 & 4 years old. He wears a 58 girth. I suspect he was a PMU foal, although I bought him from a private person. He was inexpensive and I think they got him from an auction, although I wasn't able to get that information from them. He is darling. Looks just like the grown-up version of a Thelwell pony. He was green broke when I got him- and I mean that loosely. He didn't steer or canter at all. He just kind of wandered at the walk and would occassionally pick up a slow jog-thing. He was ridden on trails by a very, very beginner rider. At least they didn't overwork him. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif It is 9 months later and he steers, trots, bends and picks up the canter on the correct lead 50% of the time. He will jump anything in his path. I haven't really trained him to jump, but we do pop over fallen logs etc on the trails and he never bats an eye. He has been the easiest to train. I love him and I would tell anyone to get one. His only fault is that he is a bit destuctive. We call him the equine bulldozer because he literally can plow down anything. It isn't malicious, but he does tend to barge his way through situations, so we are working on sharpening up his manners.

I have a Belgian/Appy cross. She will be 2 May 5th. Right now she is 15.3 in front and almost 16.1 in back. LOL I am hoping we even out before we are done. Both parents are built uphill so I am fairly certain she should.

A friend of mine described her personality best -- she has moxy. She is convinced she can take on anything. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif She doesn't look like either parent per se but she does look like her daddy's (the appy) other babies. Big brown baby.

http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifHi, I'll join... I have a Clyde x mare (we don't know what she is crossed with... quarter horse maybe. There is no TB in her for sure). She is 12 yrs old, 16.1 hands, bay roan. She is pretty mellow in the paddock http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sleepy.gif and in the barn but can get very hot under saddle, especially if there are any jumps in her way http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif. She was purchased at an auction from the meat guy http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif by my former trainer 6 years ago. They wanted her to drive but she spooked every time they tried to harness her. They wondered what to do with her until she jumped out her field. Ha ha!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Well she can jump!! never refuses anything, never stops, does not spook at any jump. I usually go for the 3'3/3'6 division, but she has jumped 5 ft (4 ft with me bareback!!! nuts I know!) http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif. I have been her human for the last 3 years. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gifShe is wonderful. And she told me she quite likes Jewelius across the aisle from her!!! but she has to act like the mature mare you know...
I love the draft crosses. I feel so much more secure on these 4 big feet... I always wonder how smaller footed horses don't twist their ankles, etc...

She is dark bay with a little white star in her forehead and dark legs.

I don't know how to post photos yet. I am going to get one of the other members of the board here to come help me do it. I need to get some more photos of her taken. I haven't taken any all winter. I have some older photos I could email.

Raven, the easiest way to "post" pictures is to set up your free Community Album at www.webshots.com (http://www.webshots.com) -- Once you have digital pictures saved on your computer, they're easily uploaded into Webshots. Then you just copy your Webshots community page web address short-cut, go into your My Space/Profile on COTH and paste it as part of your "signature." Ta dah! Can't wait to see your mare! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

East Meadow: Thanks for the vote of confidence on the Duett. I'm very, very picky about saddles. I'm not afraid to spend money to buy the best I can afford. Heck, I saved/waited 13 years to buy my existing Stalker Crowne Royal and due to its excellent craftsmanship (and gentle cleaning), it looks as good today as it did when I bought it 19 years ago.

I'm just trying to decide between the all-purpose (Rondo 2) or the Companion Trail Saddle. Can anyone help me make my decision? Take a look at both on their website for me(www.duettsaddles.com) and then compare the saddle to Tank's table-top back. My gut says trail saddle, but I'm open minded. Thanks in advance for all your input.

oh finally,,i clique i can join!! my sweet girl is 15'1. best guess is that she is a perch/arab cross,,though my trainer says she has much nicer movement than she would expect from that particular mix. she came out of a canadien auction, supposedly from a breeders sale of purebred canadien horses. the story is that she is also purebred canadien,,but not registerable due to being grey. apparently no canadiens are grey,,all are bay or black. a few years ago i ran into an old woman who declared that my tundra is the prototype of the old style connemara, and was not willing to take no for an answer when i told her what i knew about her background. she said she bred and competed connemaras in ireland in the fifties, and insisted that tundra was a fine example of one. who knows,,but i do love my girl. she is sound, sane and willing. my trainer just loves how sensitive she is,,says she is a fabulous horse, and of course i agree. it sure does help when your trainer likes your pony!!!
i do wish there was some way of taking her blood and finding out for sure what her breeding is.
she's 12 this year, and i am planning on fox-hunting her this year, and want to do some baby cross country courses, too. she is ready,,i'm still getting there. soon i'll learn to post pix with this new camera,,then i'll bore you all with endless pictures of my sweet girl!!

Choco mare, those Stalker saddles are so lovely. I am heartbroken that my daughter and her pony have outgrown her Stalker Nafey which has been a wonderful little saddle. I had a chance to handle both the Duett Rondo and the Trail saddle. Both are great values and nicely made. The trail saddle is made of such a beautiful combination of leathers, I wish I could find a handbag that looked as good. It doesn't seem to be very suitable for jumping, however, so if you think you will be jumping, the Rondo A/P might be a good choice. There are two styles, and both are really nice looking. They really are a great choice for horses/ponies with the flat back thing going on. Hope that helps!

Nice to hear that I'm not the only one with a Stalker. I will have that saddle till the day I die and then pass it on in my will.

Thanks for the advice on the Duett. I might do the occasional jump on the trail, so I probably will go with the all purpose then. What do you think...a 38cm or a 40?

I love to see lots of other draft & draft cross lovers. I love mine, he is a Clyde/TB. He is 17.1, bay, and is 7 this year.

When I went to look at horses, I was joking with my trainer that I was going to get a draft horse, although I really had not intention of the such. He just kind of fell into my lap, so I figured he would make a nice resale project. Well I fell in love and stil have him four years later. He just keeps getting better and better!

We are doing the hunter/jumper thing with a little dressage thrown into the mix. So what do you do with yours?

Oh and everyone's pictures are adorable!!

I've got one, too! Norman is coming four in June and I've had him since he was eight months old. He's teaching me the ups and downs of training a young horse. Lately there have been a lot of downs, but we've just had a rough year, what with the 5-day hospital stay (him, colic) and the resulting abscesses.... We'll make it, though, and are looking forward to coming out at Training Level in May. He swept the local Intro division last year, so we've got to move up.

Norman came with the name "Prince" from his breeder, but I've always hated that name. I did some research and read that Percheron's originated in the Normandy region of France. That struck a chord with me and I thought it would be a very fitting name for the little guy. I don't like changing names (bad luck and all) so I named him Prince Normandy. He's such a Norman, though. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif All 17.1hh of him.

That's interesting. We had a 19.1h and a 19.2h Belgian team locally a few years ago. I guess no one worried about if they were the "tallest"!

Oh, and yes, the vet measured them...

Raven, how high is that paddock fence he's standing next too? If it's as high as I perceive it to be, he's gonna really max out tall!

Has everyone taken a look at that antique photo of a heeewwwuuuggge Belgian on the TALLEST HORSE thread? Holy mackeral! He makes my Tank look small! Somethin' tells me he wasn't ridden much. You'd get bounced right off!

I have a PMU guy as well!

He'll be 5 in May, and he's a TB X Percheron, and I beleive is 17.1HH.

His Full brother, who's 4 years older then him went on to the Big Jumper (the 4'3-4'6") stuff... he sold to a Jr/Ammie in New Mexico last fall!

SO..... I'm hoping my guy can follow in his footsteps! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This year will be his first year out and we'll start on the local B circuit doing the 3'-3'3 stuff! Maybe some 3'6" by end of year.... He doesn't really respect anything under 3'! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Can anyone tell me if draft crosses are usually too heavy too jump? I have a 1/4 draft that several people have told me would never be able to jump higher than 4ft. Is this true. I see from all the photos that many of you all jump your draft crosses. I was also told that the legs on mine were too heavy and wouldn't stand up to the concussion. I always thought the opposite was true.

Mar. 5, 2004, 11:18 AM
Good lord, a 1/4 draft too heavy? Not quite.

Norman has free-jumped up to 3'6" - 3'9" so far. I've done nothing more than little cross rails and one 2' jump with me on him so far (but he's just coming four, so I don't plan on doing anything until this fall).

The barn owner at my last barn has a 1/2&1/2 that was jumping 4' at five and only going higher. And he's a heavy fellow -- Heavier than Norman.

The fence line at its lowest is 4 1/2 ft. Raven (filly) is going to be tall. She is around 15.3 now at 22 months. (OK 15.3 in front -- 16.1 in the butt. LOL)

1/4 drafts and 1/2 drafts are not necessarily to heavy to jump. Just depends. THere is/was a 1/2 clyde, 1/2 hanovarian mare jumping grand prix in GB very successfully. And you could definitely see the clyde in her.

After having TB's for all of my horse life, which is plus 35 yrs., I decided to buy my old age horse finally, a full Belgian gelding.

I bought Tyler two years ago when he was 18 mths. old and broke him to drive and ride. He is now 4 and stands a true 18 hds. And he's still got about two more years to grow! Hopefully, not any taller! (I never look down when I ride him!)

He's been a FABULOUS horse! Sweet, sweet boy, great work ethic and pretty bombproof when I drive him.

We competed in a series of Trace Paces sponsored by my driving club last year, which are almost the same as a hunter pace only driven, and we kicked the tails off the light horses! We ended up high score of the pleasure horse division. I was pretty proud of my boy!

You can see his pictures on the link here.

You guys are really in trouble, now. Since I have a clyde X who is rising three, and am the proud new owner of 3 pmu mares, you're going to be positively fed up with hearing about how they're doing! Henry is a sale horse, so i won't tell you too much about him, but my girls are here permanently. I'll be posting pics and bio's about them on my website, soon, so that everyone can follow their progress. I have another big belgian mare, that i'm thinking of getting as a broodmare, she's stunning, and I'm waiting for the truck to get here, with another 18 mares. how much do you want to bet, that I'll see another mare or two that I simply must have? So, hang in for the continuing saga of Dancing Heart, Dancing with Wings, and Polka Dot. It should make for some interesting reading.

I have a PMU gelding who is about to turn 5. I've had him since he was 2. He's 1/2 TB, 1/4 Clyde, 1/4 Arab. He looks like a mini Clyde. (That draft is a powerful ingredient!)

Jasper is a very good boy who I had hoped to event, but he's developed upper patellar fixation, so we are mainly doing basic dressage and hillwork at the moment. Jasper is very curious and yes, a big baby. He looks to me, his 5'3" owner for protection. He's currently 15.3 hands, but will probably grow a bit more.

Do you draft owners find that your horses continued to grow in their fifth years?

Cheers to you all!

Greetings all!!

Yes the Drafts grow up to the age of six or seven. Grant you not massive amounts but they can sneak an extra hand in there. Out of all our Clydes they all seem to be done growing by their sixth year. Our nineteen hand mare grew all the way till the age of seven. Yes the draft gene is pretty dominant.

It's SO wonderful to see so many happy Drafies in here!

I have a 16yo 17hh Belgian/QH who was originally bred as bucking stock on a rodeo tour. He refused to buck, so they put him and his half brother out in a pasture to starve. They were rescued, rehabilitated, and I bought him about 6 years ago. We competed in dressage for a while (he schooled 4th level with my then trainer, but my riding was no where near his talent at the time), we foxhunted, and we were members the County Sherriff department's Mounted Search and Rescue Unit. He's my big lovey boy, and I adore him. I haven't been able to ride in over a year though, because I was pregnant, then had several surgeries. I'm hoping to get back in the saddle soon enough. Here are a few pictures of us, and some of him alone. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Update on Tank: The woman who I'm buying her from (my wonderful, talented, precious farrier http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) called me to say someone else was interested in her. Out of courtesy to me and care for Tank, she immediately called me to make triple sure I wanted her. To prove my intent, I'm going to pay her for Tank Saturday and she's agreed to hold her until our fencing is done. Besides, she could use the money. She totalled her truck last week and was slightly injured (ok now). Her other truck is in the shop with no transmission. Bless her heart. She's quite a woman.

Henry, (aka Risk) was gelded a couple of weeks ago, and is now, at 2 1/2 yrs. ready to start some light work. I got on him a couple of times last fall, and he was very good, so as soon as the weather permits, I'll start working with him. He is 16.1 in front, and 16.3 behind, and isn't nearly done growing.
Heart is getting bigger, and bigger. Don't have a due date, though. Wings is a PITA, because she has to follow me around all the time, and is constantly getting underfoot. She has several toys out there, which she is destroying. Polka Dot, the appy/perch? belg? cross, has grown through the winter. When she came, she was almost 15.2, now she's a good 16 hh. I don't think she's in foal. She's still quite shy, but is getting better.

Jumping in late here...but I absolutly loff Draft crosses. My darling girl, Miracle, is by a Percheron/Belgian stallion, and out of a TB mare. She is beautiful. Whenever I took her to shows she always turned heads, time and time again people would say 'What breed is she, shes beautiful' or 'Is she for sale?'. (Sorry, I had to brag http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) While the compliments were nice I couldn't care if she was the ugliest thing in the world. She is that once in a life time horse, I wouldnt sell her for all the money in the world. Unfortunatly she had to be semi-retired at the early age of 11 due to arthritis in her coffin joints (darn those drafty upright pasterns, her only major confomation flaw). But now she is going to be a mama, three weeks and counting!

I have loved looking at everyones pictures, I loff those Draft crosses! If I see one at a show I can't help but stare and admire, I will most definatly always own a Draftx. I will post pics of my gal ASAP. Yay for Drafties! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'ld forgotten about this thread!! Silly me! And update: henry is stil growing, and is just about 16.2. He's working quite nicely under saddle, at the walk and trot. When I trim him, he looks quite elegant! he's such a nice boy.

Polka Dot turned out to be in foal, after all, her filly is a very pretty chestnut, with a blaze. Her name is Dancing in the Spotlight, also known as Spotless, Dotless, Not got Spots, or Not Got Dots, depending on my mood of the day. She's by a belgian, I think, and will be a very big girl.

Heart had a filly, chestnut with a blaze as well. Also by a belgian.

Wings is still a PITA.

And I should add Storm to the list. H'es a five yr. old arab/belgian cross, 15. 2 and a solid chestnut. Very nice horse, olves to hack, and I think he'll make a fun ponyclubber type of horse.

I'm looking for a new horse and found one that's very interesting -- Hannovarian/TB/Clyde. He's 16.3 at 4 and built more like a WB than a Clyde. Also, at what age do you think they stop growing?

Pssst... Although Norman's full baby brother has already been sold, he does have a 1/2 brother (same father, different Perch. mother) available... This one will probably be bigger than Norman!

Look for "Sam" (http://panacheacres.percheronnetwork.com/)

I have a picture if it's not on the site yet. These are amazing sporthorses. I couldn't believe how fast Norman's brother sold.

Also -- At four Norman is still growing. I expect him to stop between five and six (that is, I HOPE he stops!!). He's currently at 17.1hh and I figure he'll end up around 17.2hh or so.

A few white snowflakes try to come out, but you have to look for them. Fjord people say he looks fjord and acts fjord, the qh people say he's quiet and athletic like a qh. LOL He's just a sweetheart, coming along nicely after only been ridden a few times and packed on in the mts when I bought him a year ago.

Sorry to hear about your mare, Clydejumper.

I have a 3yo percheron stallion, 17.1hh, a 6yo mare, 16.3hh (full sister to stallion), 7yo mare, 17hh and her yearling daughter I raised. I ride all of the adults and all know how to drive, as well. Single and multiples. This year my stallion sired two foals, a bay tobiano colt out of a 5/8TB tobiano mare and a black bay colt out of a bay based varnish roan mare. Very pleased w/ both foals.

Thanks for sharing your photos, I enjoyed them. Nice to see so many enjoy the drafts and crosses.

I just had a look at your website, where did Ben's curly coat come from? he's quite intrigueing!

Thanks for visiting my site. It's a recessive trait much like the chestnut gene and has to be carried by both parents. His parents are straight-coated and he has two full sisters that are straight-coated. They've produced three foals each and no curlies. So he'll only pass it on if bred to another recessive. None of his foals are curly and won't be. He's hypoallergenic like ABC curlies and doesn't shed his mane or tail, but his feathers shed off in the winter.

Well here she is my pride and joy! Min otherwise known as secretsquirrel - shes brown with a bushy tail!
You must excuse the fro http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifnt leg technique (or lack of it!) as it was the end of the day on a fast run and the fence was rather little and we were going flat out!

Hi guys, I just love Curly Ben. We bred my stallion Mr. Magnificent to our Bashkir Curly mare and got the most beautiful Curly filly. You can see her at http://thedraftybarn.com
Just look on the shared pictures thread and you will find her and two other foals by Mr. Magnificent out of TB mares.

DRAFT CROSSES - FEEL THE THUNDER

I have a 17.2 Perch/TB 9YO gelding that I use for eventing and foxhunting. Here is a picture that is couple years old, but it's the only one I have on the web:

Perch/TB Cross Country (http://home.fuse.net/mudroom/mudroom.html.doc)

We are now competing at Preliminary and everyone is amazed how he beats the TB's on speed. He has a huge stride and loves to run & jump!

Thanks, Shelley. I've found that people either love him or hate him. To each their own. Your filly is a cutie. Did you repeat the breeding?

Mudroom... You gelding rocks! Very nice to see the crosses doing so well. Post new pics when you get them.

amdfarm,
She is a cutie, isn't she! I'm not going to re-breed her this year as my daughter wants her mare back (imagine that). I would like to see if there is any interest in the cross first. (she is for sale if anyone is interested.)I personally love her to bits but I can't keep them all.
Funny, I find the same thing about the curlies, people love em or hate em, I have the one purebred mare and 3 crosses and love them all.
But I find the same with the drafts and crosses, some people say, what would you breed that for, and others think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread!

Yep, but what foals aren't cute? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif You need to get some better pics of her. How old is she now? I can imagine your daughter wanting her horse back. Breed to sell, not to keep, right?
That's what I keep saying, but kept one from this year. Ben wasn't exactly planned, quite a shock actually, but I fell in love w/ him anyway.

Lisa (amdfarm)
She will be two weeks tomorrow (Monday). So we will be able to get some better pics in the next couple of weeks. As you said, they are all cute, but let's face it a little gawky at this stage. I've just started getting some nice pics of the other two (out of TB mares) now at 5 and 6 weeks, lots of aahh how cute, but now it's time for "sale shots" of the filly, the colt belongs to one of my boarders who bred her mare to MR. Magnificent last year.

Shelley,
Oh, she's a youngin'. I was thinking she was older. My youngest is six weeks, oldest is just about three months and will be weaned the end of the month.
Yes, they do go through gawky stages, that's for sure. Conformation pics are hard when they're growing funny, so I do a lot of action shots showing the parts of the puzzle do actually work. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
The 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months and than hide them until 3yo's really seems to hold true w/ these crosses.

Hello everyone!
I'm in the midst of making some changes to my "Drafty" site and I was hoping for some input. Seeing that we all have something in common I was hoping that you might visit the site and let me know what you think. I would love to hear some thoughts and ideas.
Thank you in advance
