View Full Version : I heard a rumor..is Strapless for sale?

I heard that a certain pony rider soon to start the juniors has tried Strapless...and liked her.
Is this true?
I also heard Red Panda was tried as well..
I cannot imagine (and don't want to) the price tag on those guys!

Wait! Let me go get my checkbook.
Strapless is one of my favorites and I love her name. I hope whoever ends up with her has lots of success and gets lots of pics in the COTH!
It's funny - these horses are like celebrities!

Strapless is one of my favorites too (including her name) - even if I sell my townhouse I don't think I would have enough money to buy her though. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif Whoever gets her is so lucky.

It would take the next 5 lives of homes to maybe be able to come up w/ half her price. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif
Amazing purchase, if it's true. She's an amazing mare...

Definitely a lucky junior who lands either Strapless or Red Panda. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif
But...imagine the pressure of taking over the ride on one of those horses. The expectations will be so high (and so much money invested)...a lot of pressure for the average 14 year old.

while i envy the kid the ride, i don't envy the pressure put upon the kid. makes me glad that i had greeneis and horses with 'issues'. if we got around a course with the minimal amounts of lookie-loos, chips, spooks, etc, i looked good! LOL

red panda was sold to the west coast a while ago for and obscene amount of money, at least thats what i had heard. it would be great to see him around here again!
I have heard that strapless is not easy to ride... so whoever this jr kid is doesnt just have to be loaded- they are going to have to be pretty slick as well!!

Just imagine the pressure to perform if you were the one to take on Strapless. With a jump like that, I can't imagine she'd be the easiest ride in the world.

Is she the one who's also a bit of a pistol on the ground? Didn't she strike out at her handler during the jog at Devon last year?

I wouldn't mind that ride, even if she is a tough one. The pressure would be killer, though. I hadn't even heard she was up for sale.

Um, cause she's a nice jumper and a nice mover and she's won all over the place. Lots of horses haven't won all over indoors etc. Plus, she's gorgeous. Gorgeous I tell you. I remember watching her at Washington one year in one of the pro divisions and thinking I'd give 10 years off my life to have a horse like her (and the money to compete it).

My guess is that the jrs initials are J.S. They sold the clever star pony and Newsworthy's lease is up.
That mare is amazing...her power is awsome and she is little...but goes like she is big.
I hope the kid has strong legs, because I think she'd be pretty hard to sit to the way she explodes over the jumps!
I bet they'll do great (if its her).
My guess at a price? 1 million at least

Wow - talk about a GORGEOUS animal.
If I remember correctly, Emily Williams recently purchased her from Clara Lindner...and then went on to defend the same Championship at the AHJF Hunter Classic Spectacular....that Clara won before on her. I think there's an article about it in the Chronicle...

Alottatrot, Emily never owned the mare, she just rode her up until last winter. The Lindners purchased her from Kim Benzel at the end of her first year and have owned her until now.

You should re-examine the picture, at first I saw what you said - but actually if you look closely, the picture is taken in such a way that you can't see her knee because her head is in the way - what you are calling her knee is her ankle. Also - the rider's ducking helps to make her look twisted.

Ok..so I have no idea who Strapless is..though I may call my new horse after her as I love that name...!!!
But, I am curious enough to ask her history prior to being a legend. Was she purpose bred or was she someone's *find*?? I love to know the "before we were famous" stories, and would love to hear about this horse - even though Ive only just heard of her!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Kiwi--Strapless was imported from Europe and stepped off the airplane "famous". She was always special and not really a "find" as we would think of one due to her price tag.

It wouldn't matter even if she moved like a truck. The jog has nothing to do with movement, or behaviour, for that matter.

Party Rose, thanks for the compliment. I try to educate myself about everything horse (and many other things not). I have a decent "library" and always looking to add to it when I can afford to. Heck, I educate myself about the stuff I don't even like, just to understand why I don't like it. I detest some of these halter QH's but I bought the QH journal and read it cover to cover last night. This issue was an 1-1.5 inches thick too...then I picked up my fiction book. Can't keep a darn book out of my hands.

Red Panda is owned by LRW Farms and shown by Maryann Weisberg-Perry in the AOs on the west coast. I had the privilege of seeing him go at Menlo several years in a row, and he is nothing short of PERFECT. Interestingly enough, he is frequently bested by Ms. W-P's two or three other AO mounts. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
There are some pictures of him here from Menlo 2003. I believe Jenny Karazissis is up in the first three photos, but could be wrong.

ohmygosh, HOLY ASSCAKES cracked me up-I've never heard that before!!
Yes, even I know who Strapless is, and I'm a lowly QH girl http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. That last picture someone posted is amazing!
I'm a rank beginner over fences, but I know enough to know she'd launch me so far, I'd be in orbit for days! I've even seen her jump in person once. I didn't see her eat anyone that day. But I learned how one looks when it cracks its back.
Nice horse http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif!! Now if only I could find that million......

Oookay...I have an idiot question. I can only agree that the jump in the Strapless picture is phenomenal. I can understand rewarding the huge, explosive jump in the jumpers...after all, it will get the horse over a bigger obstacle.
Why do we reward the "practically-unsittable" jump in hunters? It's fun to watch, but is that the point? It's not necessarily "flowing" or "smooth".
This is, unbelievably enough, an honest question http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif It is true, however, that I've been involved with hunters for...maybe 5 minutes. It just didn't seem intuitively obvious http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Strapless is phenominal to watch. Saw her at WEF last year, not only does she have a great jump, the whole picture makes you smile. Ground covering canter lofty jump, just wonderful to watch.
Think Red Panda was sold to a Jr. Not sure Mary Anne Weissberg Perry still has him.

IMO, they (the good ones) still jump in such a way that it is smooth and flowing, even though they're really high over it and showing so much effort.
If you get the chance to, watch Red Panda - he is very smooth and jumps beautifully. I like Strapless too, and perhaps she goes better outside where I've never seen her, but she gets a bit jumper-like once in awhile from what I've seen, which, you're right, isn't what one would want in a hunter.

May I do a quick hijack now since there are two perfect examples of what my question is on this thread? Then we can return to drooling over these two fabulous horses http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Okay. When Strapless jumps, her fetlocks are tight up against her body. Her knees are up, but her legs look really really tight under them.
When Red Panda jumps, his knees are just as even and up, but his legs have what I'd consider the 'classic hunter look' underneath. His cannons hang down a little, then his fetlocks tuck up.
Does this make any difference? When GM talks about tightness of the front end, is this what he's referring to? Could someone educate me, please? I've wondered about this for awhile, but can't figure out how to link to pics to show what I'm talking about. Thanks!

hey guys,
i ride with tom at all seasons and although i don't know about her being for sale or all that (which i could find out), i wouldn't go saying all of this stuff without knowing if its 100% true. i know the lindners wouldn't appreciate all this talk about her and the price of her if she even is for sale, and the fact that she is "mean on the ground." now i wasn't at the devon where she supposedly struck out at her handler, but i can say that she is one of the sweetest mares on the ground. shes very cuddly and i have NEVER seen her try and bite anyone. i will try and get ahold of tom sometime in the near future although he will be quite busy down in florida and i'll post what he tells me. but please - don't go saying stuff that you don't know if it's even true. it could be true, but i sort of doubt it because for the most part they keep their good horses and don't sell them. but i may be wrong and you may be right, so i'll try and clarify that as soon as i can!

Yes Candle, Red Panda is the more correct jumper.
Strapless's front end has improved since she was a first year horse, but there are still many who don't consider her style to be correct for the hunter ring.
Generally, you want the horse to have the squarer front end. However, once you take into account the rest of the round, usually judging doesn't come down to that kind of question, which is more noticeable in pictures than in person anyway.

Question to C. Boylen (if I may).....
A little off topic but since you seem to know so many people in "hunter land" in the USA I have just heard that ASHER a very popular Canadian Sport Horse Stallion here in Ontario is heading down to the USA to be shown by Danny Serio this summer. ASHER is a double cup winner at the Royal Winter Fair a few years ago and by the Trakehner stallion HEINZELMAN (AKA Storyteller).
This is sooo exciting news if it is true.....any comments?

Strapless has been around for awhile...5 years maybe.
If you think she's explosive on the way up, you should see her over the top http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif.
She's got kind of a jumper kick to her back end, almosts overjumps the front. Quite spectacular.
What you can't tell from the pics is that she does make it look smooth. When she's got her stuff there are few better.
I guess this just shows that Hunters are not as cookie cutter as some may think, there is room for some variation and individual style if you can pull it off like this little mare has done over the last few years.

Oh come on, mares are mares and we girls dislike others getting into "our" space.
I've got a cheap by Strapless standards mare that would make 6 of her in the nippy department while still being a good hearted and nice mare.
Hardly cyber fodder to trash the reputation of a great one.
Who cares if a dead fit athlete acts like what they are-a horse-while being forced to jog into the ring yet again after giving EVERYTHING over fences????

Didn't see her listed in any results so I'm guessing the answer is no, at least for last weekend. I don't think she would be at a show and not at least place in a couple of the classes that she was in! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If she IS FOR SALE whoever buys her is going to be a very lucky kid... I would love to see her in the juniors again!!
It would be so ideal for a great horse to be sold to a good pony rider because that would leave many more years to perfect the ride.
It would be hard I'm sure for any junior to take on that ride with the pressure to win on such a famous hunter. Everyone expects perfection and there are few (if any) junior riders that can be perfect 100% of the time on a horse (without the added pressure of everyone already knowing the horse).

I agree with you 100%, everytime any well-known horse steps into the ring with their new owner/rider I think people expect the same results that were achieved with the former, usually more experienced rider. Sometimes that happens but too often it doesn't. That's when you realize that many of these horses are NOT easy to ride, and it's the skill of the rider that makes it look so easy. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

I can tell you that I’ve gone directly to the source and Tom and Emilie both assure me that this wonderful mare is not for sale and WILL NEVER BE FOR SALE. She is part of the Lindner family. While I've generally avoided this thread (with the quantity I post, I can't be sure though), I have to say, this isn't the kind of gossip that I thought was mean-spirited or in poor taste. If this were some random horse and people were asking "is it true" and "i heard $x was the price" I'd think it's incredibly gauche (please no flames all you left handers), however, those few rare horses and their owners that get the privilege of being true superstars in the industry have to expect the talk, much like Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston can't expect to have a private break up and the tabloids talked about rumors for months before they broke up...so, as this thread dies, i'd like to take a brief moment to say for those of you with the curiosity and interest to keep this thread alive as long as it went before the rumor was dispelled, I don't blame you, and if I owned a horse as special as Strapless (and in case my horses are reading this board, yes, you're all just as special TO ME) I'd understand that people want to know what's going on with my horse because they worship her and dream of having a horse like her, and that's not such a bad thing, even if it means some incorrect information gets out there.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Here is part of an interview "Buddy" did with Strapless last year.
Dear Strapless,
I saw a photo of you in the March issue of the magazine, and I thought you were lovely!! I am very fond of bay mares. I wanted to ask you a few questions if you wouldn’t mind. I am no longer a busy show horse; I now have my own magazine column. You will be my first interview, and I am very excited! If you would kindly answer some questions for me, I will be able to write about you in the April issue.
Well, Strapless very kindly responded to my questions!
I have to say I was a bit nervous at first. I have heard so much about this legendary horse and was not sure what to expect. You know how stars can be, some are sweet and down to earth, but others are such snobs. It was very refreshing to meet such a down to earth mare. Ok, so on to the interview.
First things first, I asked her what her friends called her at home. “Marilyn” …how perfect is that! She does look like a Marilyn – with her movie star qualities. She told me she was originally from Denmark. Her father is an elite Holsteiner Stallion named Leandro, and her mother is Russian.
In hopes that there might be a time I would be in her neighborhood, I asked what she would like a date to bring her. She said, “I like it when my dates bring me flowers. They’re so pretty! And peppermints…they are my favorite treat.” I bet the gentleman callers line up around the block to go out with this lovely lady!!
I asked her what type of music she liked (just in case I managed to take her to a concert sometime) and she said she liked Pop/Rock music. Imagine, being out on a grass field, grazing together during a concert! That sounds like heaven to me.
“I always wanted to be a show horse; I love to perform.” Marilyn said. Her favorite place to perform is under the lights on the Grand Prix field in Palm Beach. This might explain why she has won the AHJF Hunter Spectacular four times in a row!! Wow, that is amazing. No wonder Breyer chose this lovely lady as one of their model horses. “I am very proud and honored that they made a Breyer horse in my likeness,” Strapless said.
When asked what she would like to do if she were to try another career, she responded, “It would have to be acting in Hollywood. I would love to star opposite Brad Pitt.”
I decided to get a bit more personal and find out a little more about her day to day activities.
She said she loves being braided and gussied up. Her bit of choice is a twisted snaffle. She says to get ready for a performance, her owner Clara, takes her out for a 20 minute hack in the morning. “I am virtually the same at home as I am at a show. I like my time to relax, but I also like to perform. Between shows I like to sleep and eat grass.” When asked how she would describe her personality, Strapless said, “I would describe myself as a diva who likes attention and is very social.”
I asked her about the special people in her life: “My very best friends are a pony named Dreamboat – who has gone away to have babies, and I miss her very much (I am always looking for her), my owner Clara, who rides me so well, my caretaker Emilie, who rubs and polishes me until I shine like a new coin and finally my special friend Priceless, who goes with me everywhere.”
