i'm getting ready to leave for what i hopeee to be my first winter showing im florida so im kind of on a 'back to basics' kick, so i decided to re-read george morris' third edition of hunter seat equitation, in the very first chapter he talks about two different ways of holding the reins;
1. his own prefrence obviously at the time, holding the single rein between the thumb and index finger and then the third and fourth fingers.
2. the more popular, rein between of the fourth finger and pinky

so my question, is does anyone use the first method? i understand this edition was published almost twenty years ago, but today when i was riding i tried it and it did seem to provide a much better feel of my horse's mouth and more control, but it seemed to upset him hes a pretty level-headed horse so i figured it was just as big a change for him as it was for me...

I do, but I don't suppose it counts for much. I do like the control that it gives me.
