No matter how much I complain, gripe, whine, moan, groan or cry, I am a Massachusetts lifer.
Of course, unless my dream of being a kept woman comes true and my wealthy SO whisks me off to a horse-filled paradise somewhere else.
Six months of winter is worth one week of glorious Spring, in my opinion (or was it five days last year?).
I think the New Englander clique must have a prefix of "Cynical". http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif

http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif NY a part of New England? You're kidding, right?
As I understand it, CT, MA, RI, VT, & NH = New England. Maine is not part of New England (which to me seems counterintuitive), but New York? What the fuh?

Well how unfair is that? Both my parents were born in New England and grew up here, but they went to Maryland for about a year shortly after getting married, and sure enough, that's where I was born. They moved back up here when I was six months old, and I have lived in New England ever since. (Except for two years in the San Fernando valley, but I'd rather not talk about that, it's just too traumatic.) So I can't be in your clique? Checking in from Ipswich, where the Clam Box still reigns. And we have the best galloping beach around! (Crane Beach)
Born and raised in Connecticut (see, I still know how to spell it!), when I moved to Ipswich almost 20 years ago, a local Boston TV station touted it's evening telecast as "New England's News". It was superimposed over a map of New England that excluded Connecticut! In CT, we were willing to consider upstate New York as part of NE, and at one point there was talk of that area seceding (sp?) form the rest of New York and actually becoming part of NE.
Personally, I think you should be able to eat the belly of the clam, too, to be considered a part of this clique. (Just kidding, sqeamish ones!) http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hey Barbarachloejosie-we are 1/2 hr from Bailey Island, I live outside Portland. Best seafood-try the seafood on the pier at Five Islands in Georgetown-best-and freshest you can get. When I grew up we stayed at my Grandda's camp on Georgetown for weeks every summmer. Lobster was considered poorman's food then. Was an old lobsterman used to trade a crate of lobsters for this really good hard cider my granddad used to make. We ate lobster every way it can be cooked-including deep fat fried whole live lobster. (do NOT recommend it-a real fire hazzard!) My grandmother complained for YEARS about the splatter grease stains all over the kitchen...which she was never able to quite get rid of...

You sure won't be able to listen to the games if you spend your summer down there in the broiling heat.
As for favorite summer places: Little Cranberry Island, Maine. Spent at least some of every summer there for the last 50 years. Talk about lobstah. My bro-in-law is a lobsterman!....South Dartmouth, MA isn't a bad spot either!

I have lived here all my life. I grew up on the South Shore. I was in the Air Force for four years and I was stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson AZ. I remember the 360 days of sunshine, let me tell you.
I am desperate to move out of here. I cannot stand being cold, I cannot stand the rain, I cannot stand the constant overcast days, and I can't stand the 8 month long winters. -10 degrees for two weeks did me in, I am moving to Florida the second I get a job there.
I do have to admit though, we have the best dressage here, the best seafood here, and the best CHINESE food here. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif

Just thought I'd bring up that bip (Brett from LA) and her hubby mr bip should be arriving in Boston soon, if they arent already here. Has any one heard from them during their cross country travels? I suggested we get together for dinner in the North End, but if anyone else has any ideas about meeting up where more of us could attend and have something to eat and talk horsies, feel free to suggest away. Maybe the Clam Box or Woodman's???

I forgot to put my two cents in on places to vacation in New England. If you love music, go to Tanglewood in Lenox MA, pack a picnic, bring blankets and sit on the lawn listening to the concerts.
If you really need to get AWAY, the closest away I know is Nantucket on Labor Day weekend. Believe it or not, most of the summer people leave just before that, but all of the restaurants are still open and the stores have sales. And something about being on that island is really being away. Very relaxing.
Check out Woodstock VT in the fall, and the Green Mountain Horse Association's facilities. They do some great fall foliage rides, the town has covered bridges and lots of New England charm, and there are several fantastic restaurants in the area (like Simon Pearce in Quechee).
Mr. Frugal and I are planning a trip to Acadia National Park this summer. Can't wait for that one! Last time I was there, I was a wee lass, and I still remember that sunrise on Mt. Desert Island.
As to your luncheon: Woodman's actually has a function hall, so no space problems. BUT, much as I'd love you all to come to my neck of the woods, it is a haul from the South Shore. Just a fair warning. On the other hand, parking is a breeze! What about Kelly's Roast Beef on Rt. 1 in Saugus?

Gathering at Clam Box or Woodman's or Kelly's? No fair, I want to come!
Hansiska - yes from Damariscotta, and I know you don't hear that a lot! Although most of my family that's still in the area live in Woolwich. My great-grandma was the last in Damariscotta I believe and she passed away about 15 years ago. My great-aunt still has a farm in Woolwich, I think it's one of the most beautiful spots in the world.

Clams at the Bagaduce Lunch in Brooksville(?) Maine are the greatest, overlooking Penobscot Bay. They close Columbus Weekend and reopen in , I think May ,maybe April. We like solitude, so if we go anywhere, it's off season. Block Island in the winter, Coastal Maine, too.

Been to the Clam Box...really good clams! And not only should you be able to eat a whole belly clam...you should be able to do it RAW, right out of the ocean. If you can shuck it, LOL!
I don't get out of state much, but will travel for most things either equine or seafood related.
Down here in CT I'm just thrilled we moved THAT much closer to Noank....Abbot's has the BEST steamers and lobster and Costellos' next door has clams that rival Clam Box. Of course, the old Jimmies had some killer clams too. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Oh my word, Misty Blue, I haven't thought of Jimmies in years. I was absolutely addicted to their hotdogs as a kid. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif They made me what I am today.
And as for beaches in MA, Crane Beach is about 2 1/2 miles of good galloping Sept through March at low tide. (Ipswich tides are the same as Boston, as listed in the Globe.) Great place to water school your horse. Good parking. Admission is cheaper for members of the Trustees of Reservations (hint, hint).
Let's see: if someone will organize a date and place, we can all show up in barn clothes and we will all know each other by our "perfume". I don't know if the COTH T-shirts will be done in time.

Bear with me! I have something that should be set to music and become the New England clique theme song! Here it is. Hope you enjoy it!
New England Weather: what happens when it gets colder?
60 above zero: Floridians turn their heat on. People in New England plant gardens.
50 above zero: Californians shiver uncontrollably. People in New England sunbathe.
40 above zero: Italian and English cars won't start. People in New England drive with the windows down.
30 above zero: Distilled water freezes. Moosehead Lake's water gets a bit thicker.
20 above zero: Floridians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves and hats. People in New England throw on a flannel shirt.
15 above zero: New York landlords finally turn on the heat. People in New England have their last cookout before it turns cold.
zero: People in Miami die - or return to Cuba. New Englanders close their windows.
10 below zero: Californians go to Mexico. People in New England think about getting out their winter coats.
25 below zero: Hollywood disintegrates. Girls Scouts in New England are selling cookies door-to-door.
40 below zero: Washington DC runs out of hot air. People in New England let the dog sleep inside.
100 below zero: Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. People in New England get frustrated because "the caah won't staaht".
275 below zero: (alsolute zero on the Kelvin scale) All atomic motion stops. People in New England start saying, "cold 'nuff for ya?".
500 below zero: hell freezes over. The Red Sox win the World Series!

Couldn't resist this one.
I'm trying to think of horse-related Boston sayings, but all I can think of is "cantah"...
the way my trainer used to yell either "That round was wicked awesome" or "That dressage test really sucked!"
THE WICKED GOOD GUIDE TO BOSTON ENGLISH
Everybody knows about pahking cahs in Hahvuhd Yahd, but there's more to the accent than that. In Boston English, "ah" (the one without an R after it) often becomes something closer to "aw", so that, for example, "tonic" (see below), comes out more like "tawnic" (former Mayor Kevin White would often express outrage by exclaiming "Motha a'Gawd!"). And it's not just after the A's that the R's go away. They disappear after other vowels as well, particularly "ee" sounds, so that one could properly argue that "Reveah is wicked wee-id" (translation: "Revere is unusual"). But don't worry about poor lost New England R's. In typical Yankee fashion, we re-use 'em -- by sticking them on the ends of certain other words ending with "uh" sounds: "Ah final ahs just disappeah, but wheah they go we've no idear."
The quickest way to convince a native that you're just a tourist is to refer to "the Public Gardens" (even if you pronounce it "Public Gahdens") or "the Boston Commons." Both are singular (ie., "Public Garden" and "Boston Common"). Other tips: Tremont is pronounced "Treh-mont" and it's COPley, not COPEly, Square (or Squayuh). The pronunciation of many other Massachusetts locations bears little resemblance to their spelling; to avoid the feeling that the natives are snickering at you behind your back, take The Massachusetts Quiz. And now onto the vocabulary...
Bangin' a U-ey ~ This is what you do while driving after you miss a
turn and you have to turn around.
Barrel: What you deposit trash in.
Bobos: Boat shoes, i.e., Keds.
Breakdown Lane: Highway shoulder. Also, an oxymoron -- the last place you want to break down in greater Boston is in the breakdown lane, especially during rush hour, when it becomes the high-speed lane (in some places, even legally).
Bubbler: That's a water cooler to you, bub.
Candlepins: Boston bowling; involves tiny little pins and tiny little wooden balls (the pins are so hard to hit, you get three tries a frame). Watch "Candlepins for Cash" every Saturday morning, always hosted by some retired/fired sportscaster, like Don Gillis or Bob Gamere.
Carriage: What you use to wheel your groceries around at the Stah Mahket.
Cleanser: Where you bring your clothes to be dry cleaned.
Dot Ave: Dorchester Avenue.
Down: Where somebody is, for example: "They're down the Cape today."
Elastic: Rubber band.
Frappe: A milkshake or malted elsewhere, it's basically ice cream, milk and chocolate syrup blended together. The 'e' is silent.
Get on the state: Land a job with the MBTA, MWRA or some other state agency.
Hoodsie: A small cup of ice cream, the kind that comes with a flat wooden spoon. Sometimes used to refer to certain teen-aged girls.
Jimmies: Those little chocolate or multi-colored thingees you ask the guy at the ice-cream store to put on top of your cone.
Mehfuh: A city next to Sommaville.
Packie: Where you buy liquor (closed on Sundays).
The Pike: The Massachusetts Turnpike. Also, the world's longest parking lot, at least out by Sturbridge on the day before Thanksgiving.
Plenty a chahm: What all houses for sale have, at least according to the brokers. Really old houses also tend to have "characta," especially if the roof and floors need to be replaced.
Rat: Young resident of certain neighborhoods, for example: "Rozzie rat" and "Dot rat" (the former being a denizen of Roslindale, the latter of Dorchester). The Back Bay and Beacon Hill do not have rats, at least not of the human variety.
Rozzie: What the natives call Roslindale, Boston's premier neighborhood. Not to be confused with Southie, Eastie or Westie.
Rotary: A traffic circle. One of Massachusetts' two main contributions to the art of traffic regulation (the other being the red-and-yellow pedestrian-crossing light).
Saddee: The day after Friday.
Scoop: To kiss: "Guess who I scooped on last night?!?"
Scrod: A small, ambiguous piece of fish that never knows if it's cod or haddock.
So don't I: An example of the Massachusetts negative positive. Used like this: "I just love the food at Kelly's." "Oh, so don't I!"
The show: The movies.
Spa: A luncheonette or ma-and-pop convenience store (e.g., the Palace Spa in Brighton) -- Store 24s are never spas.
Spuckie: Sometimes, spukie. What some Bostonians still call a sub or hero (there's even a sub shop in Dorchester called Spukies 'n Pizza). May be limited to Dorchester and Roxbury, although your scribe once heard it in West Roxbury. From spucadella, a type of Italian sandwich roll you can still buy at some of the bakeries in the North End and Somerville.
The T: The Boston subway system. Represents the triumph of fuzzy logic, or something, because it does not actually stand for any single word. Cambridge Seven Associates thought it up in the early 1960s when the state hired them to design graphics for the then new MBTA. Their goal was to come up with something as recognizable as a cross that also evoked the idea of transit, transportation, tunnel, etc.
Time: A party, usually of the political or retirement type: "We're throwin' a time for the Dap down at the Eagles. Count you in?"
Tonic: What other people call soda. In some Boston supermarkets, the signs will direct you to the "tonic" and "diet tonic" aisles.
Tookie: Somebody who goes out with a much younger person: "He's such a tookie! He's going out with a ten-year old!!!" See also, "Hoodsie."
Townie: Often, a resident of Charlestown. But townies also live in Reveah and Whiskey Point ("da Point") in Brookline, so it's also a state of mind, or perhaps hair. You can often tell a townie by the way he or she adds the phrase "'n shit" to the end of many sentences, as in "Oh my gawd, like yestihday, right, he was totally down Nahant polishing his TA (Trans Am) 'n shit."
Triple deckah: Boston's contribution to architecture -- a narrow, three-story house, in which each floor is a separate apartment.
Triple Eagle: Somebody who went to B.C. High School, B.C. and B.C. Law School. In some circles, more prestigious than a Hahvihd degree.
Westa Wuhstuh: Terra incognito; beyond the bounds of civilization.
Wicked: A general intensifier: "He's wicked nuts!"
Wicked pissa!: Something that's way cool.
Wicked f$%^&in' pissa!: Something that's just absolutely too cool for words.
What's doin'?: How are you?
Whole 'notha: A complete replacement; "I got a whole 'notha computa on my desk now."
Yah huh and no suh ~ Yes and no. Usually heard during an intense
conversation. "I saw Mickey at Castle Island and he was with
another girl." "No SUH!" "Yah huh."
Other tips: Don't say COPEly Square, it's COPley.
Worcester isn't WOOster, it's Wisstah.
Say Commonwealth Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue
or Dorchester Avenue and you'll get pinched.
It's Comm. Ave, Mass. Ave and Dot. Ave.

And as my blacksmith says it, it's "haass" (or maybe "hahss") for horse.
Fabulous job, Cluesgirl. I think you should offer that list to the organizers of the Democratic Nat'l Convention. They'll need it for their delegates this summer.

Cluesgirl, that is too funny! When we lived in southern Maine, my daughter made it to the regional spelling bee. The elderly woman who read the words to the kids had such a thick Maine accent, none of the kids could understand her and they were dropping like flies on easy words like 'prayer' which became prayuh, earn which became uuhhyunn and higher which became hiyah. I love the Maine accent because it is so rich, but it got so confusing for the kids they had to stop the spelling bee and have someone 'translate' all the words with r in them.

Clues Girl - Excellent post!!!!! So, I grew up in Connecticut, went to college outside of Boston, spent a few years in California and have now been in New Hampshire for about 12 years. (I don't know how or why considering I truly HATE the cold and winter!!!! Go figure.) And to really cover all the New England states, my horse lives in Rhode Island so I spend all my free time there. And my parent have now retired to the Maine coast. I guess that classifies me as a New Englander.

Another New Englandah checkin' in. I grew up on the South Shoah, spent summahs in Mahshfield, my roots are Dohchestah (Dot ave on my dad's side), and I used to live in Milton right around the cohnah from Spukies! I live in Ahlington now, neah Alewife T station(that name throws off the tourists). My aunt and uncle who now live in Hingham still drive into Lower Mills to get food from Spukies. I am right with you on the IceCreamSmith, I loved their icecream. People from other parts of the country tell me that New Englanders have an unnatural love of ice cream. You have to remember the old Boston accent like my parents have, where they say things like "baaahthtub," a la the Kennedys.
A couple of years ago, I was hosting about 10 people from the midwest and the south. We went to Fenway and did all kinds of Boston stuff. They loved it. The weather even accommodated them and we went from 80 degrees and beautiful to about 65 and raining, back to sunny and beautiful all within a few hours. They kept saying "New England, if you don't like the weather, wait a minute." I thought if I heard that one more time, I might haul off and smack them all- on the whole though, it was fun to show them "our" city.

Yeesh, everybody knows the best ice cream is at Kimball's in Westford. My mom went there from Seekonk when she was a kid, I went there from Hollis when I was a kid, and we go there now with my kids. If you can eat a Kimball's Special you really know how to eat.
And just to make this horse related, the original owners of Kimball's were related to Louise Kimball who owned and ran Kimstead, the big Thoroughbred breeding farm in Peperell. Anybody remember Sir Globe or Great Mystery or Cinamyd?
If I had a snappy sig, this is where it would go.

4corners, I'm from Hollis, too. I remember hacking through the orchards to Kimball's farm once or twice. Is my memory totally off, or did they stand Portrait Painter in the '80s?
Ice cream--Doc Davises in Pepperell or Locke's in Hollis.

Mutable - I remember Portrait Painter being up in Vermont, with that judge who was so nice, she was also an artist, can't remember her name at all. I lived within hacking distance of Kimstead as well, when I first started riding my pony would drag me under trees in those orchards to scrape me off his back. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif We were on 122, just over the border from Mass. Lived right across the street from the Hills, who owned all those orchards. Timmy Hills is a TB race trainer. That was a great area for horses.

Hi 4cornersfarm and mutable----I had a Sir Globe son! Hunted him, showed him, and loved him. He died at 27 last fall. He was born here at my farm, and never left the stall he was born in. I also bred a mare to Last Dance, one of Louise's other studs. Louise was a lovely, lovely lady. Did Heather Davis stand Portrait Painter there for a bit? I saw him when she was settled in VT. Talented horse, but his get had a tendency to be a bit hot for my taste.

Great thread, sooo funny! I grew up in Deadum (Mass), spent summahs and evry moment I could connive in Maine wheah my granparents had a fahm. Then moved out west, wheah I tried to buy tonic and the poo-ah girl at the countah thought I wanted to drink haeh tonic! Lived in the west in various locations foah many ye-ahs and finally came back to N.E., wheah I'm now in mid-coast Maine. I'm a MAINAH! A-YUH!

Too true! And CluesGirl, I lahfed myself to teahs, saved it to a file to send to my sistahs!
Also chuckled at the clam bellies. I remembah a clambake that a bunch of outastatahs (Utah) were at, many ye-ahs ago. I thoughtfully told them how to clean the lobstah and avoid the lady--and got most of the lobstah, and then thoughtfully told them how to take the skin of the clam's neck and be sure to eat the belly--and got most of that, too. Still lahfing after all this time. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The place in Hollis that used to be called Christophers was our lunch spot, and the ice cream shop in the basement there was pretty good. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

I have found the best clams (outside of my own kitchen - where parking is free for COTHers and we also have lobster traps, I might add!) at the following:
Woods in Plymouth next to the Weathervane - cheap cheap cheap!
The Clam Box on Wollaston Beach (Quincy)
Sullivans on Castle Island in Southie, where CluesGirl flipped burgers and contracted acne from the ages of 14 - 18! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Used to be able to bring my dog to work, he'd be on the run out back and then I could walk the beach with him at lunch! Parking's free there on a nice day (if you can regularly walk at least a 1/2 marathon. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
So - a lovely 10" of new snow has freshly blanketed our region. My telltale sign that I'm a Masshole for life is that I actually got all psyched up for this snowstorm. My classes were cancelled last night, my SO and I went out plowing at 1am, I am just back for coffee and pancakes before we go hoe-ing ourselves out for sore-backed shovelers who just got plowed back in. Misty Blue, you're talking about Clam Cakes, and they tend to be a southern New England thing. Lots of them in RI, but I think you can find them on the south shore of MA too. You cannot find them at all up this way. For the unitiated, clam cakes are clam fritters, basically balls of dough with pieces of clam in them, deep fried. Very different from crab cakes, by the way.

Grew up in "Deadum" (like Rosawood, and LOVE the spelling!!), took lessons at Milton Boarding Stable and boarded my horse there for YEARS. Tiny indoor ring beneath the barn with stone walls and support poles -- boy did we get good at pacing and "planning a ride"!
Also VERY attached to Merry Meadow Farm in Bradford, VT -- anyone know it? I went there for weekends and vacations, and to work at their events, for YEARS. My retired horse, now 29, came from MMF.

Cluesgirl -- I also took lessons at the Golden Spur (before MBS). This of course was eons and eons ago. At GS I rode Elizabeth Taylor and Brownie and Freckles and Porkchop. A close friend of mine boarded her horse Moonbeam there.
I adored Little Man though I was past his size when I started. I did have lessons on Truffles though, and Kineo -- my sister later bought Kineo.

I believe Golden Spur had closed last year. A number of barns have closed or changed ownership in the past couple of years. The Paddocks closed a couple of years ago. The Blue Hill Riding Stable was changed to St.Moritz and then back again last year because of a change in owners. I think Milton Boarding might have also closed. I think Blue Hill Riding Stables is the only T accessable barn now...

I took lessons at MBS from '74-'76 and from '80-'83 or so, then bought my horse in '88 and boarded there till '99. The Colombos sold MBS and as far as I know it's no longer a boarding stable. What about Belliveau (sp?), anyone know if they're still in business? I didn't know about Golden Spur or Paddocks closing but I've been "out west" since '99. My old gelding traveled from MA to UT and now to WA (he's 29 now!).
Cluesgirl, I probably know you, or my sisters (Margaret and Barbara) do. They had horses at MBS before I did and we all know Janice very well!

WAIT WAIT WAIT!!! I bought my first horse from Ritchie Columbo!!!!! 1968. Ya, I know, I am an OLD hag...It was just before he moved from Green Street around the corner to the farm with the "indoor" under the barn. Gad, the pole bending down there was amazing. You'd jump a cross rail and if you didn't hit your head on the ceiling or run into a support post, it was a good day! I grew up in Milton, then moved to Deadum in 6th grade. My best friend's pony, Merry Legs, died in the fire that leveled the Paddocks. They rebuilt and thank God went out of business. What a dump. Did anybody ride with Ralph and Anna??
I did my first gallop yesterday! The footing was perfect. Somebody else had gone out too early and made some big divots but by yesterday, it was fine. Lucky thing since the rain is coming down in buckets today!

Yeah, I was talking to someone in VERMONT who had taken one riding lesson at MBS and said "that's the arena in the cellar with the poles!!!!" Though I have to say I never jumped down there. Best fun was when the truck was parked inside and the manure was dropped down from the barn above into the truck. What nice de-sensitization we all got!

CS, I started riding at Integrity Eq. Center (Holden) w/Leslie when I was 9. I really loved it there as a kid. I also rode at Holiday Acres in Rutland when my friend boarded her horse there. I did some clinics with Peter Fox as well. I remember a lot of people being afraid of him, but I always had fun in his clinics. The 1st time I ever showed, I was doing some W-T-C class at Norfolk, on a school horse named Bluestone (no, not THE Bluestone!). He thought it was important to be at the head of the line, as he always was during lessons at Powers' Stable. So, "all canter, please" and he took off, looking for the beginning of the line. Ralph was on one side of the ring, Anna on the other, both yelling at ME to "PULLEY REIN!!!!". The ring steward had everyone halt and we kept zooming around. It was pretty fun, till I realized I was in REAL trouble... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Now here I am, 44 years later, still getting in trouble for misbehaving at competitions!

CS, did you ever do clinics with Peter Fox? I had a lot of fun and got to ride a really cute Appy over fences with him.
I did some shows in the Worcester area but mostly schooling shows. I can't remember all of the names but I do remember my first show was at the Sterling Fair and I think it was 4-H run. I also did all of Integrity's schooling shows and there was another barn in Holden we always went to for shows...Fort Sumter something like that. Yet Another reason I miss New England: the tack shops!!!
Here in Santa Fe there are great western tack shops - you can get some of the fanciest Indian saddle pads imaginable! - but when it comes to Hunter/Jumper stuff...Terrible! There is only one little shop and the selection is VERY limited. As in no pony sized anything...No tailored sportsmans, heck, no breeches at ALL over size 30!
Even in Albuquerque, it's tough. You go into a big tack shop where there are like 20 employees on the floor, and they're like, "oh, no one here knows about the English stuff...we just have it over in the corner..."
I miss being able to walk to Dover's from my college dorm, and passing 5 different tack shops on the way to the barn!
Ok done now, but all you New Englandahs, be thankful for all you've got! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

CS, I think Leslie is still teaching. She has really gotten good in the eventing scene and I believe has gone up to Intermediate or Advanced level and I've heard of her students going up to at least Prelim level. I guess she bought proprty in FL and has been down there for the winter (she brought some of her horses in training w/her) I know she still does a lot with difficult, problem and green horses. An acquantance sent a mare to her that was a tough cookie...she was rearing on almost everyone. I think she's been doing very well under Leslie's training though. I haven't seem her in years and years but hear through the grapevine. She was an excellent teacher though and amazing rider.

I remember Billy Beggs, nice guy, but I have to admit, he scared me sometimes the way his people rode. I was chatting with him ring side once, and he told me that he identified a good jumper by jumping them loose through a chute over a 4' log. The good ones made it, the bad ones didn't. I don't know if he was pulling my chain, sounded frightening to me. I was only about 13 or 14 at the time, so very gullible anyway.
I think Chris Johnson still rides some hunters. I never knew Brian Flynn used to be married to Jay Sargent. A bit of trivia.

I love Virginia. Best horse country in the U.S., but you can't beat the summers in New England. The heat down here is pretty bad.
