Merry can tell you The Entire Cover Story, which as Portia said was a complete surprise to both of us. Merry called in October and told the tale, and then finished with "And they used your picture on the cover."

It was all I could do to hold it together.

When she sent me a jpeg the next day, I completely lost it. She had talked to several BBers in connnection with the book, and asked if I could send a photo just in case. This was the photo, because it is my favorite; I had sent it like February of last year or so and never thought about it again.

So I was FLOORED. I am still floored. When we were at Equine Affaire a few weeks ago, there was an ad flyer at the publisher's stand, and it was all I could do to hold it together; DMK and I both loped off with copies of the flyer, and showing it to my barn friends who were also at EA was round after round of happy tears.

I got to see the blueline of the book a few months ago, it is GORGEOUS, the stories inside asolutely touch your heart. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

Here's the jpeg of the cover.

Hey, I order stuff from Amazon.co.uk all the time, no problem. So if they'll ship to Texas, I'm sure they'll ship to Oz. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

Merry's Book on Amazon.co.uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1931993335/qid=1076630037/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_8_3/026-0431722-7737263)

Be sure to check pricing and whether they'll ship from the regular Amazon.com site, too though. It may be substantially cheaper from one or the other -- I find that almost anything British-made or issued is much, much cheaper ordering from Amazon.co.uk than ordering it as an "import" from Amazon.com.

I have only been a member of this BB for a few months and so dont know the Willem story, though do know of its existance because of so many threads with 'Willem' in the title in the favorities section. Could someone post a brief summary, or PT me ? It sounds like Coreene and he were a one of a kind pair, and seeing the picture ...well its just amazing. And I dont know if I can wait until May.

I just wonder why they felt they needed a title and subtitle on the cover, too--doesn't the picture say it all? It really brought tears to my eyes. I can't wait to hear the story that goes with!

Iluvgoldies, the Willem threads speak for themselves. The tragedy is that we lost Willem last summer to age- and Cushings-induced founder. He was one of the biggest personalities on the BB, full of wonderful and practical wisdom, and is missed by all. His and Coreene's relationship personifies loving horsemanship, and hence their presence on the cover of this book....simply says all that needs to be said.

I had no idea who Merry was in real life until I read this thread. Merry sold me my first horse 13 yrs. ago. She and her mother were the breeder's and Merry trained him. I bought him going on four and he was doing small course's beautifully. He is an anglo/trak out of Memphis and I am not being prejudiced when I say that he was and still is one of the most handsome horse's you will ever see.I still own him (can't tell you how many times I was asked to sell him... Michael Paige called him a "brilliant horse" and wanted to know if I would be willing to part with him!) and he is now retired and lives at home with me.So Merry... Thank you for being a true "horsewoman". SNAP and I owe it all to the first years of his life that he spent with you and your Mom.

Thank you all for your wonderful remarks about the cover of my book. It is a different type of book than my first one, "Riding for the Blue" in that this one is not all about competing. It's a collection of intimate character studies-- some poignant, some humorous--of people from all walks of life whose lives are defined in some way by their love for horses.

I wanted the theme throughout the book to be that of looking through an old photo album, so there are a lot of vintage snapshots of the interviewees with their beloved/former mounts. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif

There's a photo of my sister on our first pony, "Honeybee", wearing her fringed chaps and a cowboy hat! (Revenge is sweet). http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, Pammy (Lord Helpus) is in their with Valor and Laurie B with a little memoir of her wonderful pony mare. And Kathy Havens (Cactuskate) is in there, too. In fact, she was the very first person I interviewed for the book as she fought her cancer battle yet still rode. Honestly, it was her passion and spirit for riding through the darkest hours that motivated me to write the book. She told me, "If my story can inspire someone else who has to face cancer to fight the good fight, to still enjoy life as long as possible, then I've done a good thing." http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif

Here's the tale of the cover shot:
I included Coreene and Willem in a chapter called, "Girls and Their Horses." Coreene's tale of Willem and her undying love for him was just pure Willem and Coreene! Coreene contributed that snapshot.

In the meantime, my photographer and I shot about a bazillion possible cover shots. Of course, they all starred ME, egomaniac that I am (and oh-so-unwilling to let go of my former modeling career). http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

Time goes by, my book editor calls and says, "We've chosen the cover shot. And it's not you."

I ask, "Well, which one of Sharon's shots did you use?"

She replies, "None. We went with one of the photo album shots that was contributed."

I'm thinking, "Geez, which one... And why NOT one of me????".

And my editor says, "It's this really sweet photo of this beautiful horse and he's just looking at his owner--this sophisticated looking blond woman-- with the most adoring expression on his face. And you can tell she just loves him."

I am still utterly clueless! So I say, "Huh. Can you scan it and send it to me?"

Lalalalalala.... I open up the email and There It Is! Willem and Coreene! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I believe it was only about two weeks after Willem had been put down. Knowing how fickle book editors and art directors are, I waited to tell Coreene until I knew it was official. And then, it all made such sense: Willem and Cactuskate, forever immortalized. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

And here all along I thought the reason why Snapperdoodles( yes, everyone still calls him that) thought he was God's gift to EVERYONE, was because I told him so...but it was YOU that had him convinced of that long before I arrived on the scene!!! And yes, he is still a wee bit emotionally high maintenance but we all know that when you look and move like that... all is forgiven! my dearest coreene,

please do not be sad. i spoke with the horse dog who lives in the village next to the village the horses live in at the bridge and evidently willem is not only marketing his after shave, but now has a sort of booth set up to autograph the book when it comes out! yes, they are already camping out in line now! there is quite a hullabaloo at the bridge about the book.

this i know to be true as the horse dog never lies. he says willem is quite a businessman, which should come to no surpise to anyone. at his press conference (it amazes me willem has no fear of the papparazzi such as i do, which i is why i am quite sure why a book has not had me featured in it) willem said he was quite honored to be on the cover but was not at all surprised the photo was chosen as it is quite flattering of him and his modder, who loffs him.

yours in royalty,

Merry - how can one thank you enough for pulling it all together? (You must sign my copy too.) They say to not judge a book by it's cover, but there's always an exception to the rule. The photo speaks volumes whether you know C&W or not. I know I will enjoy this book for a LONG time. Correene.... As always what you and Willem had transcends the daily routine and shows a peek of the higher bond that we all strive for in our horses, our loves, and probably also our lives.

Both of you are magnificent people, not just horse people, nor just women. You both have inspired many among us for a long time. So its no shock that you continue to do so by just being yourselves.

Thank you for allowing the rest of us to linger in your shoes for a moment. It truly does allow for appreciation of our own lives.

Hmmm.... 2Dogs.... Are all of the horses mentioned in the book "departed"? Good question! Actually, some are, because as I mentioned much of the tone of the book is reflective, as people interviewed look back on their own "life with horses." But I would say the vast majority of the horses written about in the book are quite alive. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My copy, direct from Merry, arrived on Wednesday. At the office, which has some of us sobbing and many teared up.

Valor's retirement, courtesty of our own Lord Helpus. And then the chapter featuring the dear Cactuskate - that finished me off.

As I said before, it was such a complete surprise for everyone re the cover; Merry mentioned ages ago that Sharon took lots of photos with the cover in mind. And I want to thank Merry again for not sharing the news about the cover when she first knew, and for waiting until October. Had I known when she knew, right after Willem had passed, it would have done me in.

Merry, your book was waiting for me on my doorstep when I got home last night and the timing couldn't have been better after a really long, frustrating day! You must be so pleased with how it turned out, the photos are stunning, and you've done a fantastic job capturing the personalities of the characters (both human and equine) in the book. Even my non-horsey husband is dying to read it, and has asked me to bring it with us when we go away for the weekend. I'm hoping when he's done with it, he'll finally "get it" about the horses! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif

Congratulations, and thanks...now I know what to get all my friends for Christmas!

Just ordered mine this morning - it had been sitting in my Amazon shopping cart, waiting for May. Glad to see that the fruitbats got it out early!

RAR, that ol' fruitbat is a silly bat indeed; all these people have their copies and when I checked on Amazon (I ordered it as soon as you started this thread), it said mine was not shipping until 5/6. Fruitbats at Amazon!

Hey, I ordered my copy from Amazon when this thread first started and it's telling me it won't ship until May.

Then a couple of days ago, I ordered another copy that is being shipped to Coreene (so she can give it to the vet at Davis who is doing the Cushings research so she can see who inspired the donations http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ), and it tells me that one is shipping before March 20.

Explain that to me!

How about this - I got an email from Amazon today that told me they no longer can get the book from the supplier so that it will not be shipping at all! Anyone know where else we can order it?

Imagine the poor folks at Amazon, looking for fruitbats to explain the rush of interest in this book!

If you buy the book though this link, a percentage is donated to TIER in Riverside, California, an organization which has rescued many horses, and thanks to Gail at TIER, LeeAnn and some others (inc Exceller), our old friend Hollywood was rescued from the feedlot and went on to live a happy live at United Pegasus Foundation (UPF's Helen is also featured in A Passion For Horses):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1931993335/trueinnocentseq

Hollywood was owned by HB long-timers Art and Betty White, who gave him to friends in Anaheim Hills who said he would have a home for life (Betty was feeling poorly and the friends had known the Whites for years); he wound up in the feedlot less than six months later. Some friends, huh? Betty passed away before learning what happened to her dear old friend; Art was delighted that there are people like Gail and LeeAnn. When I lost Willem, I went to Pegasus to check out a big TB named Summer Shade (trained after he got there by BBer LaraLee), and met Merle, who gave Hollywood the same love in his final years that he'd had during his life with Art and Betty.

Sorry for the OT spin-off; Gail has four horses with Cushings right now, which is a subject close to my heart.

I just called my publisher who is calling the supplier to Amazon.com because that simply cannot be true. Sometimes the fruitbats are running Amazon.com. For a while, it listed some guy I'd never heard of as a co-author to my book. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Okay. According to the Powers that Be, the books are available through Amazon.com via my supplier. They cannot possibly "run out." So why/how that message came from Amazon.com, no one knows. Just ignore it, I suppose.

Even though Amazon says the book will be released in May, the reason some of you got it already is because the first shipment actually arrived in the Los Angeles warehouse in February.

Although ordering it via Coreene's link, so that a donation goes to a horse rescue site, sounds like a grand idea! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I just ordered it via Amazon (thanks for the link Coreene), and they said it would be shipped in a couple of days. For whatever that's worth . . . we'll see when it actually arrives.

My book has been ordered (did that earlier today thanks to the link) and the expected arrival date is next week. Thanks a ton!

Merry, no clue what happened with Amazon, but it even cancelled the order in my shopping cart for the book that was due in May. Let's blame it on technology and say all is well!

Although we can't say a portion of the proceeds are donated, Merry's book IS available at Horse Country. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I made my bookseller order it immediately. Even knowing what was on the cover, I *still* burst into tears seeing Willem & Coreene!

Pam, I read about "VALOR" as soon as I got home last night and had a weep before I went out to the barn. Really, really nice way for such a trooper to retire. Must say again how much I am enjoying this book.

Coreene, the TIER residents and myself THANK YOU for suppling the link!

I dug through our arichives to find out when Hollywood was at the feedlot, etc. I am including our original posting of his plight and the subsequent posting of his rescue. He was such a PERSONALITY!

Original Post: Here is the 12/6/98 list of horses that need you:

1. Hollywood. APHA Sorrel Overo Gelding. Two Blue Eyes. Foaled 4/15/78.
Registered. Hollywood's previous owner says: "This is one of the finest animals
I have ever owned! He has been a winner in halter, western & english pleasure,
driving, team penning, sorting, bulldogging, calf roping and gymkhana. In the
past two years he has been a consistant and careful lesson horse for young and
old. He has been a bombproof trail horse and a confident pony horse.

Hollywood developed ring bone several years ago. In the past six months you
could tell he is very uncomfortable in small arenas and in takling the hills our
local trails encounter. He never complains? He archs his body, sweats,
breathes hard and keeps on going. His big blue eyes and his huge heart of gold
will never let you down. Light exercise is good for his calcium build up in his
front legs. Beware, he can smell bute a mile away."

By: Three Jets 2 Three Jets
Copper Grass (Hollywood)
Out of: Lil Polly Baldy McCue

So, he got old and he got ringbone and he got sent to the feedlot. Can't
someone find him a home where he can freely roam yet still receive attention?

Subject: HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD!! (and more!)

Hi all!

It's me again. With some really, really good news! Remember this
horse?

> 1. Hollywood. APHA Sorrel Overo Gelding. Two Blue Eyes. Foaled 4/15/78.
Registered.

Thanks to the efforts of Lee Ann B., Hollywood was saved by the Exceller Fund! Many thanks to Lee Ann and the members of the Exceller Fund for
going the extra mile for a horse that has always gone the extra mile.
Now Hollywood can enjoy retirement in the lap of luxury!

Here's the link to Hollywood's page on the Exceller website:

Hollywood (http://www.excellerfund.org/horses/hollywood.htm)

Looking at his registration papers when I was at the feedlot, I remember thinking how horribly sad it was that the file contained a personal note from his owner. One more time I was reminded that so many of these horses had been loved by someone at one time. Thank goodness Hollywood's picture on the net moved someone to reach out and help him find safety.

Thanks again Coreene! I wonder what kind of conversations Hollywood & Willhem are having right now? Ya think Hollywood is making fun of Willhem's accent? HAAAAAA!

Amazon is wierd. I ordered mine last Wednesday--it was on my doorstep on Friday. I didn't have any special shipping either. I can't believe it's telling some of you that you have to wait.

But it sure is a beautiful book! And very well-written. I stayed up much too late Friday reading every last word!

It's lovely, Merry. Love the draft horses, the cutting horse, and your own stories. And you definitely need to do a second one, since there's no eventers in it! Any chance it'd be re-released in hard cover?
