Re Absolut, I remember one Middleburg Classic, quite a few years ago - when the IHF was pretty new, there were a few of Absolut's get in the classes. They weren't the prettiest movers, but man, they were great jumpers, quiet and brave. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But I am bias cause he stood at the farm I rode at as a teenager, and he was the coolest, sweetest, and quietest stallion I have ever handled. His babies are so quiet and great form over fences.

Everest! He is a wonderful stallion with a matching personality. Recently, some of his babies have won some big things, including Sox Fifth Avenue winning at Upperville. He isn't advertised much because he always has a full breeding schedule along with his show schedule. My trainer is showing him this year in the pregreens.

I loved a few Absolut babies I've seen, Ragtime looks like an interesting up-and-comer and Shine looks interesting to. I love to watch Sir Caletto but unfortunately his first foal crop shows basically no prepotency with all foals taking after their dam in looks and movement. I wouldn't breed to him until I see him consistently improve the mare instead of vice versa. And I'm interested to see if he passes along that jump.

Zlotych - http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif A friend of mine adores Sir Caletto but now just admires him from a far and hopes maybe in the future she'll see a reason, but said "why should I pay $2500 for a copy of my mare?" LOL He truly is a lovely horse though and obviously tremendously talented!
So anyway, I had been thinking of Zarr for a while for a Trakehner mare that I have - are his foals generally quiet? I loved his movement in the bare-bones video they sent me but it didn't tell me a whole lot. My Trak mare doesn't need any help in the "hot" department. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Dont have a Zarr, and really can't comment first hand on his babies, but I too like his overall look, and what I saw- (Probably the same tape stripped down video you did!) However his kids are doing well in the ring, and that says alot!
I've heard that Argosy has been looked to by some of the HB breeders. I've always liked him, and considered him but when time ran out on his liscencure I had second thoughts. Got a tape recently of the young Escudo I son Escapade and he looks like he may be a nice up and comer for the hunters. Plus he's black and flashy!! That doesn't hurt.. Look at what chrome has done for some of the present stallions out there!
I also like Don Alfredo and Paparazzo.

Zlotych - YES! I forgot about Don Alfredo and Papparazzo especially. They both seem to have wonderful temperaments and their very kind owner told me she thought Don Alfredo was SICK after import at first because he was SO quiet! She said they are both incredible disposition-wise and from the videos they both have very hunter movement and impeccable jumps. I have seen many Don Alfredo offspring that have been lovely. Papparazzo's first foals look adorable, can't wait to see how they do once of showing age.

Okay, I'm going to say it, even though it won't be popular and will probably get me flamed.
While Popeye K is GORGEOUS, all the pictures I've seen show him jumping with very loose legs...Knees to up to his chin, but loose below. Is this true? I have never seen him in person so I don't know if it is just an impression from his pictures....

RugBug, thanks for having the equipment to say that. I have always felt the same way about the above named. Not to say he isn't gorgeous because he is but he does not have the hunter D legs.
I'm sure I won't surprise anyone when I say my first pick as a hunter stallion is "A Fine Romance." But also of note, "Rio Grande" was voted the 2004 USEF Hunter Stallion of the year. This apparently is decided upon by his get and their points. The second closest stallion to Rio was 2000 points below him. Just a comment.

Shine is gorgeous, a lovely mover, a super jumper and has a personality to die for - puppy-dog quiet. (It is too bad that the video on his website does not seem to be working right now - it was awesome!) I bred my mare to him and am expecting a foal in May 2005. I went to several shows he was at, met him and watched him in and out of the show ring before booking to him. The one thing I am not 100% sure is what he is going to throw - I have heard his babies are very easy going, but I really do not know much more about them or how prepotent he is - I loved him so much as an individual that I took a chance on this aspect! My mare is nice enough that I don't care if I get a copy of her or if he improves on her.......We shall see how it works out. His owners are definitely not focusing on the breeding, but rather the showing right now - he qualified for all of the indoor shows and ended up 6th in the Nation in the Older A/O Division in 2004. I don't think he had many other breedings last year.

savvy - I had noticed that Shine was not advertised in the Chronicle this past stallion issue. I guess this suggests you are right about them wanting to show him more than breed. I won't disagree with you, but it's only noticeable in his pictures. I certainly don't see it in person, and obviously neither do the judges. I think the pictures are deceiving partly due to the fact that hunter classes are nowhere near the end of Popeye's scope level, and partly due to the fact that he jumps a bit higher than the rest and is probably hard to photograph.

C. Boylen,
Thanks for such a thoughtful, even-tempered reply. I know that the stallion is extremely popular, and that my comment could easily be taken negatively. I suppose from jumping pictures alone, I would look further if I had a mare. Of course that isn't taking into account many other factors, such as temperament, movement, conformation, etc. which Popeye seems to have in spades. He does seems to be one of those jump-higher-instead-of-folding-tight type horses...but even with that taken into account, he does get those knees up to his chin, is beyond gorgeous and is fancy as the day is long. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

RugBug - I agree with you completely. However, I am 99% sure we are choosing him for my mare, Jade (by Jupiter BTW). The reason? He has EVERYTHING else we want. I only saw his video, and I can see he is a bit dangly at the ankle over some jumps - but the way he lopes to the jumps and the effort he puts in over them, makes him my a superstar in my book.
Besides, my mare has the jumping style (literally I have never seen her take a bad jumping photo) but lacks the effortlessness accross the ground that Popeye has.

Chef, I wish you could see him in person. Rachel will shoot me for this (so SHHHH!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) but I don't agree with some of her choices of rounds for the video. Only a couple of them show him at his best IMO, and he's jumped way more of those kind of rounds than the video would lead you to believe. I've seen him go just about every time he's stepped in the ring for the last year and a half, but I guess you'll just have to take my word for it until you get to see him yourself http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Yea sence I did not say who my favorite stallion was when I started this I would have to say it is Popeye K, and if this answers any of ya'lls questions about his jumping pictures I think it is because he is only jumping like what 3'6". I would love to see a pic. of him at the 4'. But the reason why I put this post up is because I am looking for a hunter stallion and I just could not decide on who to pick. I'm riding 2 Absolut offspring right now and they are both the easiest horses I have ever had to train. We haven't seen him advertised, is he still available?
One of my clients is thinking of leasing a broodmare that had a great gelding by him and I would love for them to consider repeating that combination. PS... Both are a top hack prize too. One I am assuming, since he has yet to show, but the older one has done quite well.

I have to say that I like a lot of Popeye K's foals, which of course aren't of showing age yet that I know of. He does seem to be prepotent in the sense that they all look more like him than the mare. But I haven't seen clips of them so I don't know much more than that.
Paparazzo is really lovely, but then again if you like him and Pablito, then just breed to Pablo, as you know he's going to throw something outstanding - he's got a ton of approved sons. Proof is in the pudding, not in the pudding's pudding. But, they may themselves prove over time to be just as good, which would be awesome.

While Shine is indeed owned now by Sue Overholt, the breeding rights were retained by Kim Bronson. I, too, am glad that this stallion is back to showing. When I "discovered" him in Cologne, I knew he was going to be a top hunter stallion someday. Kind of wish I'd held onto him, but I cried all the way to the bank...just two months after he got out of quarantine! I just had to have a Shine baby of my own, and we have shown her in hand in hunter classes around Texas. She is adorable. I do hope that Sue will let this stallion breed as much as possible, but I'm not sure of the arrangement with Kim. They are both great people. Shine is lucky to have them!

Kind of wish I'd held onto him, but I cried all the way to the bank...just two months after he got out of quarantine! I just had to have a Shine baby of my own, and we have shown her in hand in hunter classes around Texas. She is adorable. Snaffles you must have some fancy looking horses. I am a Popeye K fan and have two colts by him. No one has mentioned Oxford...I have a filly by him and she has all the goods to be a very fancy hunter and jumping is second nature to her...whatever is in front of her she goes over....free jumps herself on a regular babsis.

I'm looking at the pics I have to use of Popeye K for the Roanoke Horse Show ads and yeah,.. he's pretty cool!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif All the Gold's success in hunter futurity has set new standards.
I like my own stallions though too,..BROADWAY is going to make a splash (of color unlike any other!) as foals hit the ground. I showed his sire Spotlight in the amateurs 15 years ago now and we won prizes easier than if I had been on a bay! He's my favorite of all time. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif He slept at the in gate, walked around the show ground like a gelding and grazed loose in my front yard. That's NOT your typical stallion.
BROADWAY's full brother was reserve champion at Keswick among others.

I would also second the recommendations on Popeye K. I have a 3yr old filly by him... She looks a lot like her dad, moves beautifully, and is the sweetest, easiest filly in the world. I recently backed her and she took it like an old pro. She is like that about everything.

Have to put in a very belated two cents worth.
I saw Popeye K at the Lexington Spring Premiere... two years ago? I think he was doing the second years still. Being the ignorant hunter princess, I had no idea who he was at the time. I was watching the horses come in for the jog and was just absolutely struck.
Usually, I'm horribly shy, but I had to walk up to the handler and say, "That is the most fabulous horse I've ever seen."
I could tell from the way she was polite, but totally disinterested, that she knew. And heard it all the time.
I know very little about his record as a stallion, but as an individual... that horse is stunning.
Having come to the horse world at the tailend of the classic thoroughbred hunter era, that round-bodied, solid warmblood look with the high whites is absolutely my idea of the ideal hunter.
If I had a quality mare, I don't think I could resist trying to get a booking to him--just on the off-chance I'd get something approaching his presence!

Absolut'. He is such a wonderful stallion and I would love to have one of his offspring. I do believe he is only breeding on farm these days now though. I think there is so much going on with the show side of the farm that it's just easier for them to keep it simple, and given that the grand old man is getting on up there, probably better for him too.

OHF thank you for the accurate comment on Sir Caletto...we see a real consistency in his offspring in that he is bred to 60+ mares a year in the USA and so you get to see what he is passing on..the canter that you noted for sure, excellent movers, and his conformation but I have to add he has been bred to really really good mares. I will also add that just today I spoke to Paul Schockemohle's facility manager, Joseph Klaphakken, aka Kloppee...we spoke about Sandro and his son's, of which Sir Caletto is one...he said "for sure the Sandro's like Sandro Hit and Sir Caletto do not dissappoint..you can count on consistent quality". He also spoke about other lines they have in breeding and show stallions and he said this ability to produce consistently good types is not always a guarantee. And I think people forget that you have to see alot of offspring of a particular stallion before you can select one that lowers your risk as a breeder that in fact you get a good foal that makes it to competition. I read 10 mover's comment and I was wondering how many Sir Caletto's she/he has seen to make such a blatant comment...here is what I do know...the jump from the Sir Caletto's 2 year old foal crop is incredible in the freejumping trials...out of 21 we saw freejump every single one has tremendous jump and athleticism...as for his ability to "stamp" his foals that is a matter of personal taste...alot of mare owners want to see traits from both dam and sire..but to answer your question we have a farm full of "stamped" yearlings and two year olds...I would like to invite you to visit Silverhorne and see first hand...however in defense of your comment I imagine you have seen very few if more than one of Sir Caletto's offspring. Am I right?

I watched Nairobi, Shine, Ragtime, St Nick and a few others go at Harrisburg this last yr.
I'd breed to any of these 4. Nairobi has a great trot, was in the top ribbons in the hack if I remember correctly. I love his canter, it looks big, plenty of step and is soft. He jumps great as well. He seemed very pleasant back in the barn. I went to look at him again, he was crossed tied out in the aisle looking very content.

I like Nairobi and St Nick. I first saw St Nick in John Grey's barn in Belgium as he used to belong to Princess Marta and she rode w/him at the time. I liked him then and i like him now!
The one i dont like that much is Shine. I've seen him go quite a bit and i think he lacks scope. He's a gorgeous horse, great mover and has nice knees but i still would like my hunters to have some scope for when you get into trouble.
Whereas St. Nick used to be a grand prix horse, so you know he's got scope.
Anyways, i'm breeding my mare to Westporte this year. A young stallion, he's only a pre-green horse but he was mid circuit pre-green champion at Indio. Westporte (http://www.countrylanewarmbloods.com)

Thorne....glad you brought up the mare factor. Huge. After all, I am my mothers daughter. I look back at the dam line more than the stallion. BUTT, when choosing a stallion, I want a boy thats prepotent for certain characteristics. Movement, Temperment, Athletic, short back, yada yada, even color.
Glad you brought that up. I weigh more on the mare than the stallion in the end.

I'd quadruple the mare part too. When I bred my TB mare to Jupiter, part of the reason I picked him, is that he was such a great match for her.
I think if my Jupiter mare wasn't a gelding that Rio Grande would be at the top of my list.
