For any of you who used crossties for your arena-- did you drive the rebar through holes in the ties or did you drive it down the sides?

When we have used our railroad ties as you are going to, around pens, round pens, arenas or yards, we don't use anything to tie them down, just lay them where you want them and they stay there.

We quit using them, because mice love to nest under and in them and so rattlers come visiting to get the mice, not a good idea around where people and critters may be walking around.

Fine to use them, if you don't have a snake problem.
I don't think you need to use anything to keep them wherever you lay them.:)

Through holes.

DH pins logs down both ways depending on the kind of traffic around them. Keeping the pigs from burrowing under the fence he goes along both sides as it is quicker, no need to drill a hole. When he uses them as erosion control/steps he pins outside the downhill side. For something in a using area such as around a patio or raised flowerbed he drills holes. We haven't used anything to mark a riding area yet but would probably drill and punch the pin down a little so there would be no lumps or bumps to fall on.
