OK, after years of dithering I've decided to build an arena in the corner of one of my pastures. It's the highest part of my property with only a little slope.

We have a 50 HP tractor with loader and a smaller backhoe and also a laser level, the kind used in building, not hanging pictures on the wall. We did the pad for our barn so we have done a smaller project that worked.

It will be 72 x 144 feet, slightly bigger than a small dressage ring. I am thinking of 2 inches of angular sand over compacted bluestone. I might add fiber later.

What are we missing?
Pitfalls?

Add rubber (small pieces like your bluestone size) to your sand and you will have the perfect outdoor arena. Just 2 inches of sand on top of the bluestone will be too hard a surface in my experience.
