Our Formula One baby arrived this morning!!! http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=12897647&l=b1e0e6fcad&id=681770272

Shelby, Gail Rogers' beautiful TB mare ChampagneforShelby, foaled a stunning dark bay (going grey?) filly this morning at about 4:30 this morning. The mare had looked petite throughout the pregnancy, but the filly is quite tall and all legs/bones with a beautiful feminine head, a white hind foot/pastern, and an adorable little star and off-centre snip. She also has a vertical double whorl on her forehead.

Shelby was a super-mama and took to her new job instantly (she was a maiden) and her little filly was up and trying to nurse in less than half an hour! She was pretty good at walking and nursing by an hour old, and Shelby is standing like a statue to oblige!

Now for the name: Sire is Formula One, and Dam is ChampagneforShelby (by ChampagneforAshley) so filly's show name will be "Champagne for One" and vet decided the barn name is Fizz (aka Fizzy, for Fizzy-filly etc. you get the point!).

I'm told by my barn manager that Fizz just bucked and cantered in the stall! Guess she's already living up to her name! Can't wait to get home from work to take some more pics. Will update then. Oh, and celebrate with Champange, of course ;)

Pictures please! My daughter says when she graduates in 2 years with a degree in engineering, she is going to do an embryo transfer on her TB mare and has Formula One picked out for the daddy!

Formula One sure is a handsome boy! I was lucky enough to see him out cross-country schooling at Chatt Hills one afternoon.

Love your filly's name, very clever!

Cute filly. She's got some serious long legs and it looks like a good amount of bone.

(One of my dark-born fillies waited until she was 2.5 years old to show any signs of going grey. :))

Congrats! I think this means we are now related as I've got a Formula One yearling colt. Mine boy is "Just One More". So far he's a livery chestnut but I have no idea if he'll stay that color. His mama has thrown every color under the sun so it's anyone's guess.
Love your filly's name... enjoy and take lots of pics! They grow up so fast.

Thanks so much guys! This is our first foray into breeding and it's been such an incredible experience! Lots of emotions, of course, but fortunately we're coping (the champagne helps!!).

Fizz has quite a bit of roaning on her legs and a bit around her eyes. Does that mean it's quite likely she'll be a grey? Or does that all change when she sheds her foal coat?

Happy Weekend everyone :)

The 'roaning' on the black legs of a bay is normal for a bay. The legs darken later.

The roaning around the eyes often is the first sign that you have a grey. Usually, you'll know within the first few weeks. But there are always exceptions and surprises.

Have fun with her. :)

Do I get to come kiss her little face when I'm in Toronto in September? I hope the answer is yes! Uncle Robby can help you get her prepped for her 3 month pictures!

Hi guys,

Fizzy is growing up to be an absolute sweetheart. She's very, very bold and not inclined to follow her mom around. She'd rather explore the whole farm whenever she gets the opportunity - including loading herself on the trailer at 3 weeks old (while I was leading mom back to her stall). Since then Fizzy has learned how to lead (very easily) and does all the good baby stuff: picking up her feet, grooming, bathing, fly-spraying etc. She's incredibly friendly and will try to lie in your lap if you let her!!!

Here are some more recent pics of Fizzy taken at almost 6 weeks old:

Congrats. On your F1 foal. Our 2 y/o is 16.1+ and still is dark bay but i still think he will turnout gray like his sire. Bruno looks alot like F1 but they do change. Best of luck with your new baby.
