View Full Version : How old is my saddle?

I got myself a nice little Crosby Sovereign a while back, and I was curious about how old it is.

After a bit of research, I'm still empty handed. I was wondering if any of you could give me an estimate on its's age. My best guess is that it is about 30 years old, since ithas a square cantle and the "Millers England" button. But it is in really good condition, well it was before it was mangaled by a horse with a taste for leather...

Serial number: 4521 and 7 3 9679

Thanks :)

hmmm that it looks alot like my old Sovereign, which was only used for a few years, then stuck away in storage for almost 20 yrs :) Mine was purchased in the mid 1980s, maybe 1985? I'm gonna say yours is probably in the 25 yr range, not quite as old as 30 yrs.

That saddle is beautifully preserved!

See the "W R S..." on the under side of the sweat flap? That stands for Walsall Riding Saddle Co.. They made/make Crosby saddles (among others). I think they started adding the WRS stuff toward the end of the Miller's era when buy outs were making things confusing.

But WRS keeps info on the saddles they made. Send your serial number to them and they may be able to help.

thank you :). It's my baby, haha. I believe you helped me pick it out too.

I tried googling Walsall Riding Saddle company, and I couldn't find a website. I foud some sites advertising Exselle saddles, but no main page. I did find this address on some random page :

Olympic Works Garden St Walsall W Midlands Ws2 8ef
United Kingdom

could this be accurate?

The nice folks at Maryland Saddlery order Exselles and will have contact info for WSR Co. Same for a very nice guy-- John someone-- at Intrepid International (a distributor).

I have seen a webpage for WSR in the past but not recently. Too bad. It was a pretty and informative look at their nice products. If you do speak with them, will you tell the WSR execs that we miss the webpage?

The Garden Street address is correct.
They are not likely to have a website.

John Cravens is the nice guys name at Intrepid.
