I'm really worried about those in Katrina's path. If you can help anyone that needs refuge, post it here.
Does anyone still need a safe place for your horses? I know I'm far but have some extra space. I just want everyone to be safe.
Good luck to you all and god speed.

Is it not too late to evacuate? I'd hate to get stuck on the interstate during a hurricane. Not trying to deter anyone - just an honest question.
I have 14 acres, cross cut into three pastures. It's barbed wire http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif with hot wire on top but it's a rental place. No barn but my horses have been ok through some bad weather (including Ivan - I think we got cat 1 winds here). If anyone has a few horses, I could take them. Not more than two in the small pasture and probably only 3-4 in the pasture behind that.
Of course, trees down on the fence might change some of that. We're going to have tropical force winds ourselves. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I know I am a long way off in NO VA but I have a 5 acre pasture with a 24 X 12 run in shed with excellent grass available and sitting empty. I also have a couple of stalls available if someone can get their horses to VA.
Good Luck to all of you and special thoughts for my friend Sabrina Gaber and her horses in New Orleans area.

I can help find room in/near Cookeville, TN, right off I-40 for those heading northeast. We'll probably get storms, but the only way it is going to flood here is if we get a really, really nasty bout. I know my barn has limited space, but we'll find someone/somewhere for you! (931)625-6561. It's a long drive, but I thought I'd throw that out there just in case, especially for those coming from MS or AL.

Central KY- empty house and 5 stall barn- about 8 acres of pasture there, can accomodate a few more on the farm I'm at now about 3 miles away. I could make room for a stallion if need be. ALL of your critters are welcome- dogs cats goats whatever. Write down this number if you even think you might need it- 270 735 7777 -it's a cell phone with a generic voice mail message, though one of us is usually near the phone. To anybody that might need refuge- Write down my phone # and the others that have posted BEFORE your power goes out! I'm 11 hours in normal conditions from Baton Rouge.

Well, I'm up the river seventy five miles south of Memphis. She's supposed to come right over us, but by the time she gets here, she'll be down to just rain (I hope).
If any deeper south folks are coming north on 55 or 61, I'm sure that pasturing for evacuee horses could be arranged here.
Here is in my signature line.
If you are interested, PT or email me and I'll give you phone numbers.

Everyone that has space/can help needs to tell the Red Cross and FEMA tomorrow morning so that they have a total list.
Others are also offering -- Hansi Heck Melynk has also offered in Florida
There are several offering space over on ablackhorse but we all need to get the information into one central place
Afterwards it is being said there will be no water for drinking for a long time. Going to be gruesome.

I also have a 24 x 24 run-in shed that is very nice but suitable for ponies only as the roof is about 8 ft high. Other pets are welcome, too. PT me or call my cell at 202-821-6444.

Just an update and bump. I have a 5 acre grassy horse pasture with a 12X24 run in shed available for horses that I can take in. This pasture is not in use and is well rested and in excellent condition. I can provide grain and fresh water for these horses along with lots of good pasture. My phone is: 703-754-1055. I ask that these horses be current on Coggins, vaccinations and have no illnesses. No stallions please. I could provide this space for a few months, until December. I am in NO Virginia.

Seems like TN and the Ohio Valley may get some flooding too.
My home and farm are available should anyone need to house livestock or domestic pets. The house is very small but all are welcome to camp out on sleeper sofa or air matresses.
28 acres, nice large grassy paddocks and space for trailer parking.
Please feel free to contact me if you need to place for your animals until flood waters recede.

I'm a little out of the way in WNC, but could take a couple on pasture, Horseguard fence in one, high tensile wire on another. I'll leave mine in the barn and dry lot if needed. Pastures don't have shelters, but one does have some trees. Also happy to house a person, house is tiny but I do have a spare bedroom and sofa in livingrm.

Thank you Beastieslave for posting my thoughts after our chat yesterday.
Horseyfolks,as usual you are wonderful.
I am certain the "large animal emergency team" from Florida will be going to the emergency area.
Please be aware, livestock will NOT have coggins or papers, they will be finding them roaming around, just as they will find cats and dogs and all other animals displaced by this storm.
It will take a while to sort out this awful mess and get help in there.
In Florida the aftermath of Andrew was Horrific, many horses were never found, pets were just abandoned .
I too could take 2 horses/ponies,Ithink Beastieslave would take a couple too.
Gio/Beavercreek? would also take a couple I am sure.
I dont know how big your trailer is Horseyfolks, but I am sure we could find temporary foster homes in this area,Lakecity/Gainesville for a full load.
I am sure we have COTHers in this area that would help, and it would make this a COTH...Project.
During Serious hurricanes the AG dept, waived Coogins requirements in FLorida, allowing the movement of livestock to safer places.
God bless all the folks in that area,my thoughts and prayers have been with them constantly..
I am located very close to I-10/I-75 near Lakecity.

I have an empty (lush), fenced pasture I used to use for field boarding available.
I'm checking with my neighbor, who might have more safe pasture suitable for horses as well.
Stall available for stallion (s), but I'd need to keep my own outside, so the only turnout would be in the indoor arena and/or round pens, if that would work temporarily.
Email address is: littlebullrun@aol.com

I'm pretty far away but can offer a dry lot paddock with a 14x24 roof - can keep 2 horses that get along in it. (Two of mine share it in bad winter weather but they get along well.)
I'm pretty full with my own but only use this paddock ocassionally right now so can house one or 2 horses in it temporarily.

I am very, very concerned for a friend, Sabrina Gaber, her husband and daughter. Sabrina posts on this site under the name of "At Liberty Sporthorses". She lives in Covington, Louisiana. She purchased a mare and filly from me back in 2000, Finastra and Capriole. she has had 4 foals from this mare, two Sandro HIts and two Contucci's. All of these horses are with her in the Covington area.
I have been trying to reach her since before the Hurricane but to no avail. Her area, Covington was hit extremely hard by the hurricane. She moved and I no longer have her current phone number, only her email address and cell phone # (neither are working right now). If anyone knows of her whereabouts and if she is OK, please post here or contact me privately. laurawhitford@msn.com. Her trainer was Anne Hornbeak.
If anyone has news please advise.

Here's a CNN video of a farm that got demolished by a tornado that sprouted from Katrina. Looks like 2 horses are okay, but surrounded by debris. I can't quite make out the other animals.. maybe thousands of chickens or piglets?
Can't get the link to work, go to cnn.com and click "Farm Destroyed" on the right hand side.
There is very little narration, so keep your eyes peeled.
Still praying for all of you down south!

I went to the Noahswish website to see what it was all about as I didn't know of it. If you want to help you can send money, volunteer or even foster any animals by sigining up on the website.
I signed up and they will send you an email with application form to volunteer or foster. They were looking for people within a two hour drive. I am a bit more than that, but you never know if they need people further away.

I am posting again just in case as the flooding is worsening in LA and in many parishes no one will be permitted to return for at least a month...
I have at least 2 (and possibly 3) 12 x 12 stalls available (in a large, new Morton barn) and 12 fenced acres (divided in 3 fields). I also have a vacant, newly built 2BR 2 Bath cottage on the farm where someone could stay. Pets are welcome too. My farm is off Route 15 near Leesburg, VA.
I would need Coggins and health certs to make sure all the horses on the property are safe.

I am in Gonzales,Louisiana (about 50 miles north of NO). We are running a shelter here...it is the closest shelter to NO that there is...in other words..those that are being rescued out of NO are being brought to us.
Words cannot describe what it is like to be among the "victims". Many of them were picked up by buses and brought to us because they were just wandering the streets on NO with nothing but the clothes they had on and they had no where to go. These people have no ATM cards, no money, no underwear, no NOTHING.
Many of them have pets with them...dogs,cats, gerbils, exotic birds, mini horses, hamsters, snakes and lizards, animals of all kinds.....the animals are not allowed in the shelter. Most of the animals are being left in their owners cars. The owners have to go out to their cars and check on the animals many times during the day. If the owners have no car, they are choosing to stay outside in the heat with their pets. Many people at the shelter have told me of loved ones still in NO somewhere...they refused to leave because of their animals. Hopefully these people will be found alive.
In the meantime we are trying to meet these people's most basic needs...shelter, food, and medical care.
I don't even know where to begin to ask for help...do what you are doing...keep the word out that many thousands of people need prayers and will be homeless now for quite some time.
I will post un update soon.
Much love and Blessings to you all!

Covington actually was spared a great deal of this storm. Most likely your friend is fine, but cannot get in touch with you because of the lack of services. Of course, there are exceptions, but that has been the general!

Same goes for me. If you could let us know where and how to send care packages I would be happy to buy in bulk toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other necessities so these folks can feel a bit more human.
This has been a horribly sad day in the news. There were so many accounts which had me in tears so if there's a way I can send goods it sure would help me to feel better too.

I have a large amount of womens clothing that is in good condition, as well as infant (up to about 12 months) boy clothing that has been sitting in boxes waiting for me to get around to taking it to the resale shops and to the Salvation Army. I have at least a dozen pairs of jeans (between size 12-14), shirts galore, a couple of bras that are in good condition, baby onesies, baby pants (from 0-3 to 12 months), baby shirts (same sizes), light receiving blankets (a very large box full of baby clothes), ect. I also have several pairs of shoes that are in good condition that I can send as well.
I would LOVE to send this stuff down to you guys so that it can be used by those who need it. Is there an address where I can send it to your location? I could get it sent out late tomorrow afternood or Thursday morning, priority to you guys. Please, e-mail me at iheartclarke@yahoo.com if you think that you guys could use the clothes donations.
Thank you for all that you are doing for those whose lives have been devestated by Katrina.

I met a couple from Metarie last nite and they are truly an inspiration. However, they are in dire need because the husband is an invalid and really needs underwear. As OldLadyanATB say, these people are here without money, ATM card and basically only have the clothes on their backs. Its very sad but the lady was so amazing and strong. SHe had a tremendous faith and it was truly inspiring to talk to her. The church as bought her some things to try to get her through the next few days.

It may sound impractical now, but I DO have room for people and critters. I think that with the multitude of displace people, they are going to need all the housing they can get nation wide.
I emiailed the red cross and got told that they are placing people just outside the hurricane area...I don't know how they're going to find housing for a million people down there.
I can take up to 3-4 ppl, couple of horses, dogs. I'm in MN. About 22 hours away.
If these people go to 'refugee camps', the situations there won't be much better than the superdome after a while.

OK Guys...this is the deal...if animals (including livestock like horses and cows) did not get out of the New Orleans or Mississippi coast areas, they are most likely no longer alive. There will not be much need in the way of stalls, pastures, etc. Most of these animals have already crossed the Rainbow Bridge. There have been reports of pilots of winged and copter craft going up and looking for livestock in the NO area...none to be found.
If you want to make donations for those that did get out, please contact the Lousiana State University School of Vetinary Medicine...they are setting up temporary shelters for displaced animals and providing medical services. They are also prepared to take livestock animals if there are any in need.
I, myself have delivered dog and cat food and rawhide chewies. We desperately need dog crates of any size so the dogs and cats don't have to stay in peoples cars. If you want my address email me at esimison@cox.net. I will make sure everything is delivered to the victims of the disaster.
The barn where I board my OTTB is OK. We have no power and water....the water is a problem. We are hoping to get the fire dept to come in and fill all our containers. Other than that, the horses are OK.We were fortunate enough to have some water put aside, but we are running low.

UPDATE FROM SOUTH LA.
Firt thank you to all of the volunteers like OldLadyonaTB. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Red Cross. You are wonderful. From my stand point I feel like I am doing very little. The state agency I work for is currently supplying fuel for the rescue efforts and will soon be sending out brigades of people to distribute water, food, etc. to devestated areas. The stories I am hearing are horrible. Drivers delivering fuel to N O have to have armed guards with them. Looting is out of control. Large portions of the state are without electricity, water or phone (land or cell). Everyone has a relative or friend that they have not heard from and they do not know if they are safe or not. Those who did evacuate will have nothing to go back to because of the flooding, wind damage and now looters. They have started collecting bodies today (or were supposed to) and the death toll will be huge.
Someone had asked about St. Rose. I think it is in St. Charles parish and if it is they are doing okay. Not great but they are starting to let people come in to the area.
Please pray for the victims and the volunteers.

Again you guys are all wonderful! I wish I had the means to offer help for the horses!
I do have a question I have never seen anything like this, and the thought of all the animals , horses dogs cats livestock wildlife etc in danger displaced hungry frightened is as horrid as the poor souls who have lost everything. You never hear about the animals I know they are second in a time like this, but what are the chances that alot of them survive?? I suppose more small animals like cats and dogs die, but I would think horses would stand a much better chance, but then there is the water, they dont know not to drink it! Oh god this is all so awful! Sending my best prayers! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Sannios, I talked to someone who flew over the more rural areas and they were surprised not to see any livestock. The estimate for the lower parishes was about 100,000 head of livestock (just a very rough estimate) and they did not see any. This is from an agricultural person. The best hope was that owners let the livestock loose and they made it to high ground. I know there have been discussions about what they are going to do with so many animal carcasses to dispose of them when the water finally recedes.

The water rose in the greater NO area AFTER the storm had passed through. The water came into Metairie and Kenner very quickly. It rose more than 9 feet in as many hours. Until they block the breech in the levy, it will continue to flow into the city.
There was barely enough time for humans to get out....if they did get out. The animals were not so lucky.
It is a horrible situation.

More of an update. The population of Baton Rouge has now grown so much there is no rental house/apt. available. Smaller shelters set up by local churches are running out of food and supplies. Our local St. Vincint de Paul is trying to supply food and other items but it has stretched their resources too.
If anyone is looking for horse people in Folsom I can say that they had significant wind damage and there will be no communication for a while. They showed pictures of Slidell today (where my brother lived) and it is terrible. I did not recognize anything.

Checking in from Mobile. I live off of Airport Blvd. and it's crazy! Monday I stayed in Montgomery but came back on Tuesday. Billboards all over the place, the Coast Guard base looks like a bomb went off and Walmart sold out of food.

Well so far everything is so crazy that I haven't been to the barn. The BO would call me if anything had happen but nothing yet. I tried calling her today again and her house phone was busy. The cell isn't picking up either so I left a message. I'm sure they are ok. I know they don't have power. All the boarders took their tack before the storm and I got my saddle, boots, helmet and bridles.
Since gas supply is low I cannot drive out there either (20 mintues). I'll keep calling today. Plus I don't know if the roads out there are blocked with fallen trees and/or powerlines.
It's not safe to go beyond my home right now and I'm at work(which is 7 minutes away). Kim (co-worker and farrier) says where he lives there isn't any power and his customers are calling him like crazy.
The gas stations here are backed up and you have to wait at least an hour to get gas. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
As far as the Coast Guard, all the ranges are destroyed and the Base is in ruin. When the storm surge came the whole base was underwater. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Hubby will be gone until Christmas (out to sea) and they aren't even heading west. They have to get those ranges up or the big ships will crash on the land. But before they can build ranges, they have to make kits. All the 30 kits they made before the storm are destroyed. They can do about 2 ranges a day and they have a LOT to build now.
Here's the break down where I am right now.
1. Streets have NO power.
2. Every stop light is treated as a 4 way stop. (some lights have fallen and are now with Jesus)
3.Cops are everywhere. Cerfew at 6:00pm.
4. Walmart has NO food. (Even Spam was the first to sell out.) Same as grocery stores.
5. Resturants are packed and now are out of food.
6. Trees, poles, branches litter the streets. It's gotten better but still looks like crap.
Thank goodness that the people here didn't start to loot. I'm right near(under 1/2 mile) two HUGE malls, Walmart and Sams. If it was getting as bad as New Orleans, well it would've been really bad.

VERY IMPORTANT WITH WATER TESING
Everybody in Mississippi and Louisiana who wants their water tested please send samples to our lab. YOU MUST GET THE SAMPLES TO US NO LONGER THAN 30 HOURS AFTER COLLECTION
Get the samples to us anyway you can but it cannot be over 30 hours from collection date. Driving here is the best way. We will get more information on Mississippi's and Louisiana's protocols on water testing. If anybody here knows, please post!!! I'm going to be in the lab so you are always welcome to say hello when you drop off the water samples.
Collect water in an I-Dexx brand bottle or an EPA approve sterile bottle with sodium thiosulfate powder in it.

All the shelfish farms are closed and I suggest that nobody eat ANY shelfish!
Stay out of the water cause it is infected with Tetanus, Salmonella, E.coli and other nasty microbes.
There will also going be EEE and West Nile outbreaks so please take care of yourselves.
STAY AWAY FROM ANIMALS YOU DO NOT KNOW! Rabies is 100% fatal and there is no way we can get the animals tested if you get bit. They have to kill the animal and send the head in for testing. Stay away from wildlife! Only mammals can get rabies too.

I will also post a link to COTH on CNN right now. If anyone can help, they are here.

Equit8tor - what area are the mini's in?

The minis are in Waveland, Miss.
The information in the "hit the road" Katrina thread says that they had 9 minis, with 6 surviving. I guess they told the camera to tell the Mini Assoc. that they are there and need help because they have no feed...
Read the other thread for the original information..

There are several farms offering assistance on craigslist.org
just click on the affected cities (they are in red) and then click on pets to see posts that offer help.

official estimates are that there are 100,000 refugees in Houston/Harris County, TX
the Astrodome is full, Reliant convention center is being opened up, the George R Brown Convention Center is next on the agenda as soon as they can clear the schedule (legalities of cancelling those that had reservations for it)
an apartment complex has been donated for more permanent housing
most motels/hotels in the area are full
private homes are taking in people (one gentleman has 50 staying with him and expects 40 more in his 3,000 sq ft house - the owner is sleeping in his closet)
there is a hot-line where people with spare rooms can offer to house some
it's pretty damn amazing

CNN’s Anderson Cooper Airs Clip of AMHA Members and Horses Pleading for Rescue
from Aftermath of Katrina
Alvarado, Texas – September 2, 2005 – Following the airing of a live Anderson Cooper CNN
broadcast from Waveland, Mississippi, the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) has
been flooded with offers of help and support for some of its members featured on air who are
trapped in this area. Drs. William and Judith Bradford along with their three children have
survived Hurricane Katrina but are now pleading for help to save their AMHA horses.
“As soon as the segment aired, the phone here in the office began ringing off the hook,” says
AMHA Marketing Manager Alison Elrod. “I received more than 350 emails and 150 phone calls
within the hour.” In the segment, Dr. William Bradford called upon viewers to contact the
AMHA and alert them of the situation while stressing that he had no feed or water for the horses.
Immediately going to work with Chance’s Mini Horse Rescue (http://www.cmhr.org), the AMHA
along with concerned citizens and members began to formulate a rescue plan.
Volunteers from all fifty states and even in Canada have volunteered to go help the Bradford’s
and their remaining horses. Members and concerned citizens who live closer to the affected area
are packed and waiting to go. “Our biggest problem right now,” says Elrod, “is contacting the
news media to let them know that we are aware of the situation and trying desperately to reach
the Bradford’s. We need any help available to gain access into this area but want to be extremely
careful to not interfere with current rescue operations. It is our desire that the AMHA, CMHR
and others have the chance to help out our members who have been faced with this unbelievable
burden.”
The AMHA is concerned about the safety and well-being of the Bradford’s and all other
individuals affected by this national disaster. Hoping to bring a small sense of relief to some
affected by this situation, an account has been set up by Chance’s Mini Horse Rescue to raise
money for this and other equine rescue operations. For more information on how to become
involved and updates of this story, please visit us online at http://www.amha.org.

rumor is that some states have no fuel. Maybe we should compile a check in from posters about that. Not sure how it would work but if fuel is hard to get, is there anyway to do a chain so to speak. Maybe if we could get a few trailers donated, some one could start by taking the load from its starting point, meet the next person and hook the next persons truck to that trailer. would work best with goosenecks. So, basically horses get loaded on a 2-6 horse at pickup point being driven by volunteer one with his truck goes as close to destination as fuel supply will allow and meets volunteer whose truck is now attached to that load, etc etc. The donated trailer needs to have the most common ball hitch and electric plug. a list is compiled by people willing to volunteer stating where they are from, how far they can travel with the fuel supply, kind of truck they have, ball size and electric type. Could this work?
This way, drivers that are able to operate in LA and Miss could get more animals out of there faster. Proof of drivers license required. Everytime a switch is made, supplies could be handed to the person heading back. eventually the supplies would end up back to the starting point.
doing this chain with your own truck and trailer would be better except i am fearful that reloading these animals over and over again would be bad.
If it cant work, the same thing could be done in the opposite direction with supplies only.

Hi I can take someone in in a pinch. Not the best set up but better then nothing.
I have a round pen and a paddock. No shelter but I can pull panels out of the round pen and set up a temp. stall or two for a bit in the barn. Or if the horse plays well with others I can just add it in with mine. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Anything to find someplace to stay for someone.
I just hate to think of someone with no place to go. I can probably steal a corner of my neighbors barn for hay storage in addition to mine. Bottom line is between my place and friends we will make it work. Good people.

I have about 10 acres out here and could set up something temporary for goats or horses.
I could also take in any dogs, cats, birds etc until they can find a permanent home.
We also have an extra bedroom in the house for someone who may need it, maybe 2-3 people. And also can provide temporary employment as my fiance is a granite installation subcontractor and is always looking for a good helper!
Sending money isn't enough, I wish I could help out some more. If anyone can take advantage of my extra space, please don't be shy, let me know. If you want to relocate permanently, this is as beautiful an area as any and we will help out in any way possible. Great employment opportunities, nice open land that's still affordable and low property taxes.
If I can help anyone from Katrina out, please let me know.

a report from on the ground in New Orleans:
Just got out last night. I could have stayed , my supplies would have
lasted for seven more days
BUt, the fires have started.
The reports of looting downtown are exaggerated. Yes, they broke into
the grocery stores, drugstores, gas stations, for food, etc. Canal
street had a few hours of thugs doing sports shops, but all other
shops and the ENTIRE FRench Quarter is safe and untouched. The storm
did glass and roof damage and trees UPTOWN> Just needs to be swept.
Looks LESS dirty than a typical Mardi Gras day.
I was never threatened. 99.9% of our people are heroic, stoic, and
human beings of great quality.
THE FLOOD did NOT get into the Fr. QTR> and along the river to AUDUBON
PARK>
I stayed and helped and photographed and bicycled these areas every
day.
NO shooters, some idiots, but everyone doing the best to get along and
survive. Other flooded areas, it is very desperate and there are some
battles going on, but very isolated.
From Monday to late yesterday there were NO military, red cross, fema,
or anyone with supplies DOWNTOWN>
Even the N.O. Police and Fire Dept were largely absent.
I stayed in the Qtr at A Gallery. The building and contents is
presently fine.
I will be going back soon to help the other people
The Amazing people of NEw Orleans will survive and rebuild.
The media stayed on Canal Street and are missing the real story.
Unfortunately, the "looting" story is all they had downtown and its
repetitous playing of that footage has setback recovery. IT FALSELY
scared off the rescuers, I guess.
Too many rumors reported without eyewitness verification.
Bad business, needs to change.
Please spread the word.
Bush and his people have been bad to us. Every hour matters to the
remaining people
THe surrrounding region is overwhelmed with recovery. Baton Rouge has
200,000 people to help
LSU is a triage center.
EVERYONE is pitching in.
The entire situation is complex and difficult for everyone. Many
shortages , gasoline especially.
BY the way, Since early Tuesday , access into New Orleans via the
downtown Miss. River Bridge has been clear to Baton Rouge. Everyone
else got in that way, why not the military?
Four hours away by CAR is Fort Polk, one of the largest bases around.
Bring the boys home, especially the National Guard.
New Orleans needs your love and positive thoughts.
Email and spread the word. Contact your leadership in Washington and
keep the pressure on.
Especially today and tomorrow.
Remember that these people are the heart and soul of the New Orleans
everyone loves.
See you soon

Not that I know of for people specifically looking for permanent relocation. Would be a very good idea though. Fortunately we are in a position where we could help a young family get back on their feet. I am sure there are some other people out there that could do the same!
Would be nice to make the connection, specifically with those who want to move out of the LA area.
There is a website out there that is looking for housing for people who need shelter temporarily. It's at http://www.HurricaneHousing.org... I posted there, but the biggest need is within 300 miles of the hurricane. I couldn't believe the generosity of these people across the country, it will give you the chills to read some of what is posted there.

I found this on a Katrina yahoo group:
Message: 7

From: "janet" <imjanetmills@yahoo.com>
Subject: Chantilly VA group going to pick up animals this weekend
anyone within the proximity of Chantilly who is interested, please
contact Patty OFF LIST at:
pattistinson13@aol.com
pattistinson13 @ aol.com
We have decided to take the bull by the horns and act.
There is little coordination regarding animal rescue efforts down
south. This is not due to a lack of trying or to incompetence. It
is simply too huge for any one group/person to coordinate a huge
rescue effort quickly enough to save the maximum number of lives.
That said - we are making plans to drive down south. The current
plan (this will POSSIBLY change) is to leave Friday night and drive
throughout the night. We plan to pick up animals all day Saturday
and leave for Virginia Sunday morning.
What we need:
Money - lots of it - to pay for gas & expenses and to give to
rescues/shelters down south who are helping. It will also be used
for vet expenses for animals brought back.
Leashes, collars, and muzzles. We would ask you to bring these items
to us in Chantilly VA before we leave. We would also like to fill
our vans with food to distribute while we're down there. Cat and dog
food are requested.
Foster homes and rescue groups. Fosters and rescues must commit to
holding on to animals for 3 months to give their families a chance to
reunite with them. Please note - we willl know NOTHING about these
animals. We can't promise breed, size, sex, medical condition,
temperament (although we will temperament test on-site). Basically,
you'll be taking whoever needs help.
If you can help, please respond immediately via email and commit to
what you can do.
Note that after driving for two days, we hope any fosters/rescues
will either meet us in Chantilly Virginia or arrange your own
transports from Chantilly, VA to wherever you are.

Hey everyone...I am mostly a lurker on this board, but I do post occasionally. Anyway, I live in the New Orleans area and we evacuated for Katrina (thank god!) and I am currently staying at a ranch in Alexandria, LA (central LA) with 2 of my horses. I left 2 horses behind out in the pasture, 3 dogs (free to roam our property), and my 6 cats (also free-roaming). I did get back in to check on the animals over the weekend and all were OK. One guy's horse was hit with debris and had to be put down. I also have 3 other horses at a friend's house in Robert, LA (near Hammond), and I'm sure they are OK, but he was in East Jefferson Hospital at the time of the storm and I cannot get in touch with him.
I just wanted to check in with other Katrina victims and the board to make sure everyone was OK, and to let people know I was fine (even though I'm not very well-known here). I felt so bad leaving my animals behind, but they were fine when I checked, but I'm sure my 2 horses in the pasture will lose weight since one is a OTTB and the other is 24, but as long as they were not hurt I felt a little better knowing I saw and touched them to make sure they were OK.
The property that we live on was totally destroyed except our house trailer. All our stalls and the rental barns on the property are destroyed and will need to be rebuilt. My boyfriend's older sister lost her house...a tree fell through it, and she had to put down one of her pygmy goats when she returned to check on them because it had been sick before she left and it was worse when she got back.
We won't be able to go home for quite sometime because of no power, no safe water, disease, and the barns will have to be rebuilt...it's going to be a long hard road when we get back. Thankfully, the people in Alexandria are taking great care of us and letting us and our animals stay for nothing. There is a big group of us from the same area so we get together and prepare meals for the whole group and hang out and help out around the place.
Well, I will get off the ranch's computer for now...people need to use the phone, but I will be checking in frequently from now on as I would like to read this whole thread and make sure all the people from this hard hit area are OK. Thanks all
