View Full Version : Beautiful breeds

LazyTrot

I know everyone appreciates a particularly beautiful example of any breed, but certain breeds appeal to different people (arabians, lippizaners, friesians, etc,) I don't mean anything to do with temperament here, but for pure good looks, what breed is your favorite? (For me, Thoroughbreds are the epitome of "horse beauty")
(And, yes, I am bored at work today!)

In no particular order:

Polish Arabian
Friesian
Andalusian
Clydesdale
Akhal-Teke

Saddlebreds, all the way. The big eyes, close set ears, upright neck and overall "awareness". They absolutely do it for me and I won't own anything but.

Though, a nice Hackney pony comes in a close second.

Beauty in motion- Saddlebred
Just plain beautiful- Arabian

And there are individuals of almost all breeds(dogs and horses) that make me drool....makes me think of the drop-dead gorgeous Doberman bitch that showed at Westminster a couple of years ago- I couldn't take my eyes off of her!

Totally Thoroughbreds. But something about an Arabian with a flowing tail and a proud carriage gets to me too. Harkens me back to the days when all I ever wanted in life was to be on a beach with the Black Stallion!

Like you've mentioned, there are exceptionally beautiful animals of every breed, but for me, a fine looking TB still grabs my attention!

Critters Everywhere
Nov. 29, 2005, 09:07 AM
I like the two extremes...

A super-lean, ultra-fit TB (think racing-fit) or a monster Perchie are probably my absolute faves. (preferably a dark-bay TB with minimal chrome & a black Perchie...but I'll take any color except bright chestnut! ick!) Of course, Art Deco is my favorite all time horse to watch and he isn't either, so go figure! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

But I like lots of other breeds too...Arabs (the ones with the fine, dished faces), Friesans, Clydes if their feathers are shaved off (who is it that has the one from the breeders' forum that she will be using as a foundation mare? I *adore* that mare!), Kiger mustangs, Welsh...

For me, the biggest issue on whether I find an individual horse attractive is how fit they are. Fat, out-of-shape horses aren't any more appealing to me than fat, out-of-shape people (of course, that doesn't stop me from being plump & out of shape myself or owning a couple pudgy, out of shape horses! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif). And I prefer the muscling that developes on an eventer or a foxhunter than the muscling on dressage horses.

Thoroughbreds followed closely by Trakheners. Or better yet...combine the two http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif I can always find the Trak in the barn. Nine times out of ten, it will be the one that caught my eye as I was walking through http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif And nothing in the world is more beautiful than a TB at a full gallop http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

I love a fine example of a TB! Arab's are gorgeous, but I am not exactly sure I like the current halter look.

Okay, I am ready for the hate mail: I cannot stand the huge hunky heads on Friesian's, Andalusian's, & even many a Morgan. JMO, to each their own.

chanter, have to agree with you. i don't care for a 'rough' head on any horse, TB, QH, whatever. while i like the Iberians, and love my little Morgans, there is a tendency for them to not be so refined. which is ok by me, as long as ut isn't too terribly clunky and rough looking.

A well put together WB is absolutely my ideal, but since they're a type, and the question was about breeds...

A spotted Saddlebred running in my pasture is my favorite http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif!

After that, it would be a toss-up between a Friesian and an Arabian at liberty. Also anything that is a true palomino (really gold) takes my breath away.

I love Dutch Warmbloods. Go KWPN! My 18 h. black-bay gelding with 4 white legs and a blaze is my dream horse come true.

I also have a Trakehner mare who is beautiful. She has a beautiful head and face, and does not have an Arabian look to her at all like some Traks. do. She looks very German.

I have to say that I really love the powerhouse-dressage-European-warmblood look!

I like anything with loads of hair. Like mane and tail hair, not just winter coat hair! I also love the look of Arabs and Saddlebreds. DaytimeDrama, that's what I'm talking about...something about Tb's at a gallop makes me cry, too. I was kind of wondering if other breeds evoke the same reaction. I admire watching well-muscled, powerful, dressage horses, but it doesn't bring tears to my eyes.

Amchara

Crabbet Arabs, Connemara Ponies (have to have the pony look), and TBs (prefer the ones that are not long in everyway imaginable, they look slightly awkward just standing around, but I still love them).

BarbB
Nov. 29, 2005, 10:52 AM
I will take a TB for riding over anything, and nothing can touch the athletic power of a galloping TB straining to get his head in front of that other horse, but if I had a beautiful pasture and wanted horses for ornaments.....I think nothing is more beautiful than a really classic Arab.

I used to go to the Arabian National every year, I couldn't get enough of looking at them, in ANY class. The top 10 stallions shown in-hand was the icing on the cake.
But I have ridden several and they don't appeal to me as a riding horse, so I guess I won't have one looking out the stall door for me. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For fantasy quality, I like the Friesians, they always make me think of LadyHawke.

For beauty, it's definitely Freisians and Arabians. Plus, the equine love of my life was an Arabian, so I'm a little prejudiced.

For me - the words horse and beautiful are synonomous.
I can cry at almost any horse in action - any horse sport. From a Thoroughbred galloping to a Three day event horse bravely going down a bank, from a Hannoverian passaging, to a Holsteiner driving around an outdoor course. Then again maybe a Shetland carrying a child or a Welsh pony jumping with his precious pigtailed cargo. All make me cry but, of course, the horses of my heart make me cry the most - my little Oldenburg colt trotting the triangle at Devon or now as a regal young stallion in his field of friends, the big red face with the crooked blaze of the Westfalen looking out of the stall to see if I have a carrot or the Arabians in my past running at liberty to see me when I called.
How can I pick?

There is nothing more beautiful than a little section A welsh. I bought one for my daughter and he's become the love of my life. I'd love to have 20 of them. One isn't nearly enough.

You, too? I remember when I was a kid watching the races on TV and I would literally get so choked up I'd get the chills. And I still get that way!!!

I appreciate any breed because I think there is beauty in all of them but besides TBs, I think Saddlebreds are gorgeous creatures. And there's something about appendix QHs, especially the ones that literally float at the long trot and stand over 17h, that makes my jaw drop!

I have spent most of my life with horses around Warmbloods, and to me there is no greater beauty that a powerful Hannoverian "dancing" with his rider. Except maybe the thrilling push of a Thoroughbred to the finish. Or, the sight of a Fjord, carefully shepherding a child one minute, and carrying a skilled rider cross country the next. Or, or --- oh heck, I love them all!

Thoroughbreds. Beautiful, athletic, and with that undefinable quality called "heart". Once you have one that loves you, he'll go for you till he literally drops. And that "look of eagles" that makes shivers go up and down my spine!

Interesting reading. Choices seem to be chiseled faces or hair breeds.

My choices are working horses, covered in a sweat layer to accent the movement of muscles being used. The kindly eye, willingness, is a huge part of appeal. Carriage Driving with multiple horses, polo, cutting, barrel or roping animals, really draw my attention best. Those who work for a living. Cute face is not really important to me, a good attitude is easy to see, something I would enjoy using.

Okay my user name should probably make it apparent what my preferences are http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif but I'll add a couple other ones.

I like:

Cleveland Bays
Halflingers
Icelandic

I admire Lippizans for their performance, but I've never found them particularly attractive. Andalusians are quite beautiful, but I'll go with the Lusitano (http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/horses/lusitano/) as my romance breed. Also gotta love the Paso Finos (http://galeon.hispavista.com/caballospastoreo/img/pasofinozc.jpg), though.

As far as a breed goes, I have to say either a Belgian Draft or a Clydesdale. To see a 4 or 6 up at a road gait hitched to a wagon, with all those powerful muscles going and feathers flying and just hear the thunder! I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Here's my favorite pic of my Belgian, Mac.

But I'm not biased, of course...

I would venture to say that the Saddlebred head is not necessarily attractive to all, but many would agree that it is indeed a noble head. Most Saddlebreds that I have had the pleasure of working with have had long, narrow-ish heads with big liquid eyes, long sculptured ears and chiseled features giving the impression of wisdom and kindness.

They are not my breed of choice, but I can completely understand why some would find them stunning.

Are you sure you are not thinking of standardbreds? They do not always have very refined looks, but I love them just the same. Saddlebreds are usually very thoroughbredy and refined looking in the head, but you do find the occasional one with a coarser face. They are developed from TB, standardbred and Morgan bloodstock.

The other day I pulled my shaggy little Morgan out of the pasture and he took one look at all the jump standards laying on the ground (the wind had blown them down) and grew to about 18 hands. I just took a step back and drank it in - he was proud and upheaded and on his toes and it was just breathtaking.

Another time I watched as the grand old Thoroughbred mare meandered into her field. Nothing "special" but just the way she walked - that "this is mine" way of covering the ground - another Kodak moment.

Post parades at Keeneland make me cry.

A four-horse hitch of Friesians makes me stop dead in my tracks and stare.

The pictures of the ponies jumping always make me smile - the way they carry their young riders so confidently and with such work ethic.

I could go on and on but you get the idea. I have favorite moments with many breeds, I couldn't pin it down to one. Sorry!

If anyone thinks Saddlebred heads are ugly they have mixed up Saddlebreds and Standardbreds or they have seen VERY poor representatives of the American Saddlebred (http://www.brianreimerstables.com/)

Check out Alliance Stud (http://www.alliancestud.com) which stands both saddlebreds and morgans.

I'll watch my horses and my neighbors horses playing in the field and all make me stop, watch, and smile but the ones that take my breath away are the Trakehners/Anglo-Trakehners. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Guess I'm not the only one as a couple of cars slowed down to watch my 2 yo and yealing Anglo-Traks playing in the field on Sunday. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hanoverians, Holsteiners and Oldenbergs are my favorites. Hanoverians being tops for me. I just drool when I see a WB doing dressage.

But Clydes also have a special place in my heart. Rode a Clyde/TB for almost 20 years. What a wonderful kind horse.

Now I ride Falconaro (6yr old Hanoverian) who has taken over the job of giving me wonderful rides.

OK..got to admit I am a softie, just love them all.

Eye candy in my book, in no particular order...

Trakehner
Polish or Russian Arabians
Akhal-Teke
Connemara
Friesian
The Baroque breeds (Andalusian, Lippizan, Lusitano)

French Anglo-Arab
There are of course, stunning individuals of all breeds. But I think these are the most consistently lovely horses around!

I really love my guys...who also happen to be pretty good looking!

The most striking is my 3 y/o arabian who is chestnut with a light flaxen mane and tail...his mane reaches down to his shoulder. He's got the pretty dish, and the naturally archy neck and big liquid eyes. A large white blaze and 2 white socks are the icing =D

The most beautiful in that lean muscled athletic way is my 5 year old TB. She is a chocolatey bay color, with very little white, save for a small white star and a low white hind pastern. She's super shiny almost metallic in the summer and has very chiseled features. Even when out of shape she looks like she's got those cut muscles =D

The most cute is our 7 year old pony. Who right now is a complete furball. She's a little devil though, somedays she's beautiful to me lol some days she's not!

have a beautiful mare, Enchante (Le Minuit Enchante) she is 5, 16.3 hh and stunning, all black and elegant- a bit modern

my gelding (Ludse- Shakespeare's Sonnet) was 16.3 hh, also stunning and black and very talented.....

the breed that is unmatched in beauty and talent.

Morgan's have a spark to them...so pretty. Not the Saddlebred types though. Sorry not my thing. Remind me of chickens or ostriches. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/uhoh.gif

Almost any draft horse in harness is beautiful. Think Jethro Tull/Heavy Horses

Welshies are so cute.

Love Iberian horses. One of my personal favorites.

WB's are nice too. They have their own grace, and their movement http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif Too $$ for me.

I'm a sucker for the Baroque breeds, too, but there's something about an Arab trotting that takes my breath away.

Speaking of taking my breath away, every time I see my draft cross gelding, Miles, in his paddock, it takes my breath away, too. I can't go anywhere without numerous compliments on him.

Saddlebreds - Saddlebreds - Saddlebreds!!!

My hubby actually once said that he knew that he never made my heart beat as fast as when I was watching a talented Saddlebred move! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif So True!!!!

I think Arabs have the prettiest heads, but the size and feminine grace of a Saddlebred wins hands down with me! Saddlebreds have some of the most amazing ears and I like a bit of white around the eye as well.

Mustangs are beautiful in their natural state - wild mane and tail, large intelligent eyes, always alert. They are the epitime of the word "horse." Yes, they can have a coarse head but for pure regal beauty and pride, they are stunning.

For pure looks alone:
appys (foundation)
thoroughbreds
shires
Anything really!

Trivia - many of the mustangs in both Utah and California have some Saddlebred in them. Seems both states had some ranches in the 30's/40's that had ASBs that got loose and into the wild ... so, if you see a more refined/longer head, that may be where it came from.

I'm probably the only person in the world that will say I like the way Standardbreds look. To watch a good trotting horse in full stride -- well, where do you think I got my handle from? "Now THAT'S a trot!" I don't mind their "plain" looks, because they have such great minds and characters that you don't notice. And, there are some FANTASTIC-looking Standies out there.

I am a sucker for a Roman nose, so I like the drafties and Baroques, too. Dished faces never really appealed to me. (Figures I would get one of the only STBs in existence that could pass for an Arab, but I love him anyway.)

I do also like the "primitive" look of breeds like the Icelandic and Fjord. I don't know if I would call them pretty, but they appeal to me for whatever reason.

I have a 29 year old Polish Bred arab. I have had her since I was a child she was a childrens hunter. She is my true and only love. Even though I do hunters I did show her in the rated Arab shows as well. I must say some of the Arabs are just beautiful. I do not like the current halter type. The older Polish lines are OMG! I have some old Arab magazines from the 70's and early 80's and they are so pretty! My old gal is not doing well, cushings, age, etc. But.....she is still so proud, and her eye is breathtaking! I love the older type arabs!!!!!

I just have to respond, even though the thread is old. No particular order:

*Thoroughbreds (The looks of eagles! I love my Bugs and that wonderful Afleet Alex had "the look" for me as well. Love 'em... beauty in motion.)
*Trakehners (Lovely, graceful, charming, substance without being HUGE, refined without being fragile, WONDERFUL temperments/personalities, awesome horses)
*Anglo Trakehners (Well... duh... http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif for a combination of all of the above, the perfect mix in my book. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif And, my Frodo just ROCKS!!!!! )
*Anglo Arabs (I have just ALWAYS love that combo, I like the "fire", I like the presence, the head is NICE, not too refined (teacup-like), that spirit (of the ones that I have been around) just takes my breath away.)
*Morgans (I don't know what is it, a combination of refined and sturdy at the same time and I am a sucker for BIG eyes and wide fo'heads.)
*The Budweiser boys (they (Clydesdales) speak for themselves. Auxh wonderful and noble creatures, I am in awe of their size/feathers/personalities. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

TBs all the way. i'm not sure that even the highest level jumpers exhibit the courage and hjavascript:void(0)eart that a racehorse does. i've known a lot of OTTBs (good and bad, mostly bad javascript:void(0)) & it's crazy how much they put out, even if it's not necessarily "productive" in their new life. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif
