View Full Version : One terrible registered name

I was going through my paperwork and realized that my 3 y.o. I'm taking to a show tomorrow is named "Mr. Poco Peppy Leo". I'm not sure I can show a horse with that name. It's just too awful.

If I want to sell this horse to regular showing people, not just AQHA people, it's probably okay to give him a different show name, right? I suppose his name means something to QH people and might gain attention, but I'm afraid it might make everyone else laugh and point http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A name that fits... hmm... Maybe I should call him "Climbs Through Fence Without Tearing It Down," or "What Are You Doing On My Porch Again?" or "I Can Untie Any Knot On Earth."

In the QH world, that name, though terrible as it is, would say alot for the horse because of the bloodlines it shows. But if isn't going to be shown in AQHA, I would change it in a heartbeat. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I never really liked how stock breeds name their horses, my one QH is registered as So Hot So Cool http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

If you ever sell him to somebody familiar with QHs, by all means tell them his registered name.
Otherwise I would change it for a show name.

Stock horses aren't the only awful names.
My OTTB's JC registered name is Peaceful Skier.
*barf*
I refuse to make him go out in public and be identified that way.
It was a terrible attempt to combine sire and dam. Sire is Speedy Nijinski and dam is PeaceTime.

My OTTB is Amarillo Elbert. After many years of hiding that name, I ran into his breeder and asked him what on earth he'd been thinking. Apparently he went in shares on the breeding with the original Marlboro Man, a guy named Elbert from, yeah, Amarillo. And was so grateful for the capital that he named the horse for him. Sadly, Elbert never received any publicity through the horse, because I would never dream of showing him under that name.

A worse name for a QH, "Wilhemina Dustbuster." He belongs to my trainer, who will never show him under that name. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I showed my QH in hunters under a lot of different names including "Amtrak" (for his tendency to land from a fence and bolt off - pretty much like trying to stop a freight train since he is 1600 lbs.). I also planned to event him under the name, "Le Grande Poule," ("The Big Chicken") because he hates water and would never get past a water obstacle.

I would only use the AQHA name if showing in AQHA-sanctioned shows.

My QH's registered name is Tee Array Lark. I really think that name sticks. But for hunter showing which is what I do I changed it. I don't think it makes a difference under a different registery as long as you have his papers.

Edited because I got side tracked. I had black Arab mare who's reg name was Ali's Blackdiamond *gag* and if that wasn't bad enough, her previous owners were calling her Jasmin *vomit*. And she was a nasty, mean little b**** too, she was a Jasmin the same way I'm a Southern Lady http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

I did consider "I Can Tear the Metal Siding Off the Barn", "The Door Frame is No Match for Me" and "My Giant Hooves will Crush Everything in Their Path", but somehow I think that "Bentley the Barn Destroyer" has a certain elegance to it and clearly defines his purpose on earth.

I feel strongly that a horse should have a name that truly reflects who they are. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif I learned this lesson when I inappropriately named my hunter "Just My Style". He really should have been named "If You Do That Again You are Going to the Meat Market" or "I am Never Riding This Awful Beast Again".

I bought an APHA gelding last year from a friend. After the papers changed hands I learned Max's name was Ima Cool Skippa. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I've since learned a tad about AQHA and APHA names...so now it makes sense to me. It is neat that hearing the name you already know a good portion of the horse's lineage, but they sure do sound funny at first, LOL! I can see why he had the barn name Max...the only other name that would fit him would be Ima PITA, LMAO!

don't feel bad...my first and much loved and missed (he died almost 5 years ago) first OTTB was owned by me with the appropriately haughty name (in honor of the NJ stable, yes) of Lord Stirling. When I tracked down his breeding I learned my silver horse had been born a chestnut roan out of My Saucy Gal and named....are you ready...Strawberry Sauce. I swear, if you said it you could SEE the poor thing's ears hanging....At least my OTTB now had a decent JC name - Asherman - and I still use it for his barn name (well, Ash, aka A$$ when deserved), although I show him under my company name.

Or how about "One Terrible Registered Name"?

I just couldn't bear to show him as his registered name....its just too umm race horse-ish (he was a racing bred QH).

Dec. 11, 2004, 04:11 AM
Back in the 80's I bought a TB mare with the name Fox Earrings. What the heck is that? She was the foundation mare for a line of performance horses that I have Dutch, Holsteiner and Oldenburg, that are all going premium. I'm on my 4th generation from her.

One thing they all have in common is Boy, can they jump!

TBs have some of the weirdest names. I think it has to do the the Jockey Club name rules and there are so many of them that it's easy to run out of ideas. When I register them, I have to send in 3 possible names. You never know which one they will pick.

You gotta' wonder about those people who write the possible names on the registration sheets...sometimes I wonder what they've been drinking or doing at the time they make a final choice.

Some of my past horses have been named:

King HoHo (Registered Quarter pony)--we renamed him Al Capony.

Chim Chimere--makes me want to bust out into Chitty Chitty Bang Bang songs.

Ty's Best Man--this one was a jocky club TB, never raced. His barn name was Buster, so we called him Filibuster for his ability to want to 'negotiate' every time we tried to do something new.

Soes Ahead--OTTB, ran his first race at Belmont, and lost by 42 lengths. So he was NEVER ahead. Called him Riley, and since my dad loaned me the dough to buy him, I called him A2/C (airman 2nd class) Riley (my dad was in the air force as a young lad).

At one time, I had a horse I was riding for some friends, who was named Enchanted Dagger. I called him "Simply Dagger." I thought I might begin a trend, and have a Simply Getty, Simply Cecilia, etc., but it never took off.

As far as favorite breed names though, I'm gonna' have to go with the Trakehners. The 'fahrt' line is/was a strong bloodline, but I'm sorry, I'd really have to think twice about having a horse with fart in their name.

Used to be a paint mare at my old barn...Texas BarB Express Rose. hmmmm.

Also an amazing paint geldig I used to know (used to clean up in the AA's on our Texas A circuit) with his registered name as...DialsCherokeeUno. Makes no sense to me. He showed in the hunters as Bypolar Bear and that fit him perfectly!

John (now Renaissance) was registered with the Jockey Club as Intrepid John; as he went back through several generations of Johns (All Done John, John Alden, Speak John, Prince John) this wasn't too bad, but some of the horses he raced against? Fourleggedy Beastie takes the cake.

I still think that the worst horse name in existence was the one I read about in Equestrian magazine a few months back. Horse had been named Pete's Horse. The new owner was changing the horse's name (don't we all understand why?) But what did she change it to?

I'm going with Clever Escape, I think. Don't want to go with a name that makes him out to be too awful - he's a sale horse, after all http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

By the way, he was a jewel at his first little show. Went in two flat classes and came out with a second and a third. Would've won the hunter pleasure if he hadn't whinnied: "WHERE ARE MY FRIENDS!? ACK!!"

I thought of some more bad names:
a TB named Holee Nolee. My boss: "They didn't have Molee available so they gave us Nolee. Isn't that cute?" http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

and we have a beautiful QH mare named Two Bit Date. I'm not even sure what that means but it SOUNDS pretty slutty.

I have "Sunday's Beyond" and I've been in barns with "Senor's Sunday Punch", "Steamin' Stacy" "Zero For Brains" "EB's Lil' Snickers" "Snortle Chortle" and my favorite. "Pinky Fluffy's Lil' Cookie Wookie" Yeah, the interstate checkpoint where I had to give paperwork did not take me very seriously. Especially when they went to look at this horse in teh trailer and he was a 17 hand warmblood....They laughed for a solid fifteen minutes.

Ok, I swear I have a 1600 lb QH and yes he jumps. I am quessing on the weight, but I'll bet he's very close, he weighed just under 1500 when he went to Tufts to get his stomach scoped 2 years ago and he's since gained at least 100 lbs. I can't post pictures here but I'll send you one if you want proof http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My appendix isn't THAT bad, Try My Rules. I show him under it, because I totally lack the creativity to think of a show name. Barn name is Taz, which I like because I can twist it into a whole bunch of different nick names like Spaz, Tasmanian Devil, etc.

when she was a junior (late 60s, early 70s), my sister had a TB whose name was "Gay Rebellion". She showed him as "Gandalf the Grey".

And we were told there was another one named "Gay Romance".

Most of the others have been OK. Meadow Lark was a registered QH, nothing wrong with the name except that she was VERY un-bird-like.
The others that came with registered(TB) names were Daisy Clipper, Spy Illusion, Derby Day Dancer (the only thing wrong with that is that you immediately KNOW that he must be a race bred TB, which isn't always the right "first impression"). I forget Magic's registered (TB) name, something about Anchovies I think. Maybe Anchovy Pest. That is pretty bad.

Blinky

Anchovy Pest! That is the worst yet.

Ben is "Heza Pelican Bay" Huh? Doesn't make sense to me at all. Changed it -- he shows under "Longneck Bottle."

Buzz didn't have a barn name, or a registered name when we got him. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Guy had just called him "The Thoroughbred" (He raced QHs on the bush track nearby and bought Buzz to see if he could outrun the QH - no registration necessary. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ) I found the lady that owned him when he was born (she'd bought his mom already bred to add to her Appendix QH breeding operation and didn't need the TB baby) She had his baby pictures nearby and sent them to me -- she also told me that they'd called him "Buzz" because he buzzed everywhere as a baby. It fit.

We named him "Repeat Offender" as his show name, and boy, has that come true! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif I might not do that again . . . http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Vandy back on page 5: Did your horse come from PA? I scribed at a show about 8 years ago and there WAS a horse there named Reject. I remember it well cuz it was such a terrible name for a show horse!

There was an Appie at one barn I was named, "Oh He's So Shiny". I think that is the worst name ever!
My guy goes my Michelangelo, which sounds grand, but he is barely 16.1hds, but he can jump the moon.
I owned his half sister for a while and I thought her name was cute, as it was a sutle play on her parents name. Her name was "Tiara", and her sire was "Three Crowns" and her dam was "Be Bright Lea". Tiara was quite a tom-boy, and the name really didn't fit her, so her barn name ended up as just "T".
I have thought of changing my horse name to "My Idiot Savont" He can be brilliant over fences, but last year ended up with five stitches in his shoulder from running into his stall doorway too fast and three more above his coronet band when he caught himself running the fence line ( he also found an Artery!!!)... I wonder if the NA/KWPN will let me change his registered name???

I never did like the name, he was called hawk for short and he's too sweet to be a hawk. His barn name is Tommy and his show name is Tommy Boy because he has the personality to fit. He just has this adorable, "love me" way about him. I must admit though, I still keep in touch with his trainer and the people who took care of him and you would have thought I tore their hearts out when they found out I wasn't using his registered name for show.

About 20 years ago, a friend of mine won a Saddlebred filly in a drawing. The breeder, knowing that this filly was going to be raffled, wanted to let the new owner choose a name but needed to have her registered before the raffle. She put on the application for name: No name at all. Guess what? The horse's papers came back with a name. No Name At All. Apparantly, ASBA wouldn't let them change the name, so she got stuck with it. The cutest part? Her barn name became No Name.
FYI for all of you AQHA and APHA folks out there with horrible names-
You can change the horse's registered name if they have not competed in an AQHA/APHA event, won an award, started in a race, earned monies, or has had any registerd foals.
For a fee, of course. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As many others have said, I think it would be best to just change his SHOW name, not his registered name. Most of the time horses don't go by their registered names and many people don't even know them. Your horse can be registered as Mr Poco Peppy Leo or whatever it was, but you can show him as anything you would like, and he can have a totally different barn name.

Personally, I think you should keep his registered name, however much you may hate it, so that IF you ever need to sell him, you have your options open, and that will make for, prospectively, a better sale, having his bloodlines in his name like that.

I don't know. I don't think you should worry about his registered name that much. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It's not important unless you want to sell him, and, like I said, I think you should keep that option open, and just give him a real awesome show name. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I girl I was in Pony Club with had a QH mare who's registered name was (I kid you not) Casino Dogface. Ouch. Her barn name was Foxy. My Pony Club horse's name is Hoot Wing Walker (Appendix QH), but Hoot really did fit him.

My OTTB gelding's registered name is Swinging Romeo (gag me). When I was trailering him home, I listened to the Robin Hood movie soundtrack, hence his barn name, Robin. His show name is White Shore's Call.

Oof. My guy's Jockey Club name is "He B A Runner."

His grandsire is Alysheba, so they just took off the last four letters of Alysheba's name to make the most embarassing name possible for a Louisiana-bred thoroughbred.

And they jinxed him too. He is the slowest thing on four legs. He wouldn't even canter for the first month that I had him off the track. My trainer had to throw dirt clods while I flapped my legs against him. Embarassing.

How about this name? I leased and showed a TB gelding named Private Thoughts. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif The name was embarrassing enough. I mean people must have been thinking,"hmmm, Private Thoughts, what kind of Private Thoughts?" http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

My grandma names all the horses she breeds and sends to us, and geez, I need to start hepling her name them. The WB/TB cross had the worst name: Royal Smoothie. Laddawan was another bad one...but I'm not sure that she named that mare.

Automatic - You had me laughing for a good 10 mins there when I pictured you flapping your legs + trainer lauching dirt clods. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif I know what it's like - my old mare was like that! My trainer would snap the lunge whip at her .. Granted I was 10 or 11 and about 4ft tall http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I still think my big TB from when I was a kid had the worst name ever (and the most unimaginative)

His name is T's Wing Out (Dam - Elizabeth T, Sire - Wing Out)

I changed it to show :-)

There are some great registered names out there, and some horrilbe ones. My OTTB's registered name is Race for the Stars, which fits him perfectly http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif My spazzy little speed demon. But my friends have a TB who's registered name is Humble Wallace. Talk about awful! Poor guy's the cutest thing on 4 feet! My other friend owns a TB called Zircon, which isn't as bad as some, but she's not exactly in love with it, either.

My OTTB mare is registered as BRACKETS. Who the heck came up with that for a name, and how?? Actually, a better question would be what the heck was the breeder/owner smoking when they came up with that name?

Don't recall if I replied to this older thread earlier and don't feel like cruising all 9 pages to find out. My husband's AQHA gets Worst Name award with A Fist Full Of Hombre (ewwww! what an icky thought! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif). My daughter does not like the name of her Quarter Pony though we actually thought it was cute. He is Two Spot Doc. He is Doc Bar bred and has 2 spots. She did not think Doc was a cute pony name and re-named him Carrot as he is a bright orange chestnut. That works too and it's her pony. She can call him whatever she likes.

I had a TB as a junior who was registered as "Doctor's Biscuit." Can't get much worse than that. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Dam was War Biscuit (direct descendant of Man O'War and there was a Sea Biscuit connection somewhere too) and he was bred by a doctor which is I guess how they came up with the name.
