View Full Version : Spring Re-Sale Project....Should I Bother?

I've been tossing around the idea of doing a horse/pony resale project for the spring, but I'm not sure if it's a smart idea with this economy. A few boarders at my barn can't give their horses away at this moment it seems. Granted, there are some issues there, but still....

I'm far from a professional trainer, but I can put a solid w/t/c and excellent manners on a horse/pony. I also do a lot of trail riding, etc...and like to get them to the point that they're safe and solid citizens ready for more elaborate training.

Is there even a market for this type of horse right now? Is it worth the effort? I really don't want to end up with a third horse for any excessively long length of time, but would really love a fun spring project.

I've done 4 so far over the years and had a great time doing it. All 4 went on to find great homes and although I didn't make a ton off of doing it, I made enough to make it fun and worth my while. I'm not trying to make a huge profit, but like to make back at least what I put in and a little extra.

Any pointers on what is selling right now and if there is a even a market for what I'm looking to do? I'd really love some tips before I make a decision about whether to do it or not. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. TY! ;)

You're right. This market is NOT the time to do this unless you are okay taking care of the horse for as long as it takes. I'll have stalls at home and am thinking about doing the same, but I'd be completely fine if the horse never sold. Lots of people get into it thinking it will be a quick buck with so many giveaways lately, but end up not being able to feed or house it.

as long as you're ok with the idea that the horse might NOT sell, and you can afford to keep him long-term, then why not?

I was just checking scores for Full Gallop and Southern Pines. Somebody still has money. There are tons of people at these events. I think there is still a market for certain types of horses.
I had thought about getting back into sales, but not going to try it yet.

I think definitely. You just need to be realistic about prices. Ive been lucky enough to sell six horses this year so far that came off the track and then to the new owner. Not big money but basically you could buy horse for cheap (2500+) and put some mileage on it and then resell. I also have been getting a lot of hits on my other higher priced horses in the last 3 weeks. however, we had such a horrible winter that they are just starting back to work.

basically, people are out there buying....

Honestly what I see selling locally are good trail horses. More and more people are not showing and want a solid trail horse to relax with. We have a very nice older gelding to give away, but he is chicken-hearted on the trail. No takers.
