My 7 yr old gelding has diarrhea (moderate) every time the boarding barn slightly changes the type of hay he gets. I am not talking grass hay to alfalfa, more like grass hay to another grass hay.
He is on round bales most of the time but for the blizzards he came in and had square bales in his stall that were from the same hay dealer. He had two days of pretty significant diarrhea. I assumed there was some alfalfa in those bales but the BM said there wasn't.
At the advice of my trainer, we started slowly giving him alfalfa/ timothy cubes to acclimate him to a higher protein forage. He accepts alfalfa fine and can even take straight alfalfa hay with no problem. (had to buy an emergency bale during the storm)
I thought it may have been the stress of a pasture board horse being brought into a stall but now it has happened twice outside with hay that doesn't look especially rich or different. The diarrhea never lasts longer than 24-36 hours and he has a normal temperature.
I am baffled. Any ideas?
