My maiden foaled an adorable colt on shortly after midnight on Monday . I made the trip up to see them both yesterday and was told he had been a litle colicky during the night (Monday into Tuesday) and was given banamine and had blood drawn. When I saw him he appeared fine to me, he was very spunky. I guess whatever he has comes and goes. Today they ultrasounded his belly and saw that he had lots of gas. He is being treated for possible lactose intolerance and ulcers. A ruptured bladder is one of the possibilities but upon repeat bloodwork his electrolytes were still good which they say would start to tail off it that was the problem.
I am not in the position right now to spend a ton of money on him so hopefully its something that is easy to fix. Here he is from yesterday. His name is Joshua.

I had something similar last spring with a newborn. Blood work and everything was ok, just could not figure why she was colicky for the first 24 hours. IgG was way above 800. I gave her the enema as per usual. Gave her pepto, ranitidine, pepcid Ac and banamine as needed. As a last ditch effort before hauling her off to the emergency clinic the vet did a high enema and that worked. She was pefectly fine hours later and is a very tall and spunky yearling. Hope he's ok, but maybe suggest that to the vet? that could be what is causing the gas is a meconium impaction.

They did say they were going to tube him tomorrow if the pain wasn't completely gone. She did mention that it could be a high impaction. I am still trying to wrap my head around the lactose intolerance thing. I always thought that was impossible with milk from the same species and only happened when you had a different specie's milk like us drinking cows milk. I guess he is good as can be for four hours and then has twenty minutes where he isn't feeling good. She said he isn't thrashing in pain or laying on his back with his legs in the air but you can tell it hurts. I guess he stood under his mom last night and rubbed his back along her belly for several minutes soothing himself. Good thing she is a sensible maiden.

We had a foal like this that was stopping nursing as he was umcomfortable. Gave him Banamine, and some fluids, and he felt better, began to nurse, but then got some ulcer pain as the Bamanime causes them.

We had started him on Gastrogard, but it took a day or so for that to kick in, and he went thru several painful periods. His owner spent many hours sitting with him, rubbing his tummy thru the painful times. A day or so later, he was fine.

Hope your little one begins to do much better soon.

Sometimes during the birthing process foals, can have ribs broken - hard to diagnose but not that rare, one vet told me.
If it is that, then stall rest and keeping them comfortable is the recommended treatment.

It doesn't look like this story is going to have a happy ending. Josh is no better and maybe a little worse. They have exhausted all the diagnostics they can do at the farm so the next step would be to send him to the hospital for a work up to the tune of $800. Then however much more to fix whatever it is assuming its fixable. I have already spent more on him than he is worth. It sucks when you have to reduce life and death to a money issue but that is where we are at like it or not.

I talked to the farm owner just now and we decided to give him another day or two to see if the gastroguard or lactaid helps. She said he is clearly uncomfortable but does not seem to be in distress or in agony. If either of those things happen they will have the vet come euthanize immediately.

Have they done the high enema??

I have no experience with this, but I was reading the posts and someone mentioned that they had a baby that did the same thing, and the high enema did the trick.

As a side note. Would they expect the gastroguard to work in just a couple of days? Doesnt it take longer than that? Again, Im no vet, nor do I have experience in treating a baby, but Im curious, and want to see this little guy get better!

OMG!!!! When the phone rang just now and it was the farm owner I obviously was expecting the worst. Our plan was to give him until tomorrow to turn the corner and if there was no improvement to put him down. If he got really painful before then they would call the vet out sooner of course. That is what I figured the phone call was about.
No. Apparently Josh had a runny stool all down his legs this afternoon (Impaction breaking up?) And has been fine ever since. She was watching him on the camera and he was bucking around the stall, then nursing, then nosing at the hay during our conversation! I am not going to get my hopes up too high but its hard not to see that as a turn for the better. Thanks so much for the jingles!

Laurierace
Mar. 4, 2010, 09:34 PM
Sounds like it was an impaction afterall because he passed colostrum today that should have been long gone. The vets didn't think that was likely because he wasn't super painful.

I have been fighting the tears all day but I think it may be time to let em rip. I am so happy and grateful but at the same time there is still that fear lurking in the background. When I first got the call that she had foaled the farm owner was telling me about the foal and the birth process and how it all went and I kept waiting for her to get to the bad part. That isn't like me, I am a bright side kind of person in a big way. When the bad part did come the next day I wasn't super surprised. I guess time will tell as always.

Ok I am back briefly but need to go to the training center to do the chores I didn't do this morning so pics will have to wait. My first impression was that he looked like hell so he must have looked really bad before. The cute gray eyeliner is gone from his eyes because he was rubbing his head on the ground so much. His eyelids are all crusty but the eyes themselves look good. He has a sleepy look to him that I think is at least in part due to swelling in his eyelids. He is walking normally now, not hunched down like a german shephard like they told me he was doing before. He pooped and it was almost liquid but not quite. He is nursing almost constantly, you can tell he is trying to rehydrate himself. He peed three times in the 20 minutes I was there so the kidneys are working. He was stocked up behind more in his left than his right. He did not appear to be lame but of course they will need to keep an eye on that and make sure its not the start of joint ill.
Lisa's bag was no longer tight and he had no milk on his nose after he nursed. You could hear him swallowing. I had a long talk with the vet on the way home and they say he needs to be monitored but if things continue the way they are now he should be fine.

The vet was out to the farm today to check Lisa for rebreeding and looked at Josh while they were there. She called and said she wanted to let me know how great he looked. I guess he has lost a little weight due to the whole ordeal and he still had some scuff marks on his eyelids but other than that was perfectly normal. He was running around outside when they got there and was very bright and friendly when they brought them inside. We dodged a big bullet on this one thanks in part to all of you!

Great news! Do you think he'll turn gray? Couldn't really tell from the pictures, but looked like there was some light hair around his eyes? I saw Buddha when he was at Hill n Dale. After all the stallions were shown someone ask which one I'd most like to ride and he was my pick! When he was on the Derby trail I heard this funny quote from a commentator. Since Pat Day was his regular rider they thought it would be great if he won the Derby. Then you'd hear " I just want to thank God for Buddha"!

He was born turning gray so there is no doubt about it. Not sure of the time table though. His lower legs are gray as is his muzzle and around his eyes. Its amazing how quickly he has bounced back. He looked like death warmed over last time I saw him and now he looks fantastic.

Go, Josh!

His half brother is turning into a nice little sport horse--great mind, very brave, athletic, virtually no spook, loves people. The dressage trainer who is coming out to help with him can't believe he's 100% TB--but I do, when I see him racing around the arena! He can run, just doesn't want to most of the time.
