My mare had a lovely Dark bay filly this afternoon, by emergency C section. The foal presented on her back with her neck deflected and she was just enormous!

They were both doing well when I left the hospital, but please send get well wishes their way.

Blueskidoo are you in my neck of the woods? and did Lauren help you today? If so the vets called me first today by mistake (my number and Laurens are very similar) they didn't say what it was concerning, but then I got a few calls from friends wondering if one of my mares where in trouble.

I hope both your mare and foal make a 100% recovery good luck and keep us updated.

Seems there has been one too many C sections this year-very scary http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif

Jingles for your mare and filly.

It's so good that you were able to get the mare to the hospital in time. When you noticed the filly was presented wrong, what did you do to help stop labor? Get the mare up and walking till you could load her? Also, how long was the trip ?

Thanks for the jingles! I'll be off to see them later this morning. They didn't call last night, so things must be OK so far.

Pintofoal- Yup, that was me. Lauren was amazing, I couldn't have done it without her. (and we never met before that!)

The foal is by PWynnnorman's now deceased Theodore. A really special foal to say the least, out of a very special mare.

The story goes like this...

I'd been having a bad feeling the last couple weeks, though everything was still within normal limits, I just couldn't shake it off.

Mare lays down, I know she's going to foal. I go down to check on her, nothing has really started to happen, so I glove up and reach in, and there is all this pink tissue in the way. I'm thinking "oh my god, it's a red bag" but the tissue was pink. I feel around a bit more and find an opening and grab two feet and pull them through. The feet are pointed up.

I'm on the phone with the vets office in seconds, "foal is breech!" get the mare to her feet and stand her frond end down hill. Vet's office calls back and says, vet is an hour away, but we have called someone in your neighborhood to come help you. Lauren arrives in less than 10 minutes, and stickes her hand in the mare. she holds the foal back and I run for the truck and trailer and we take off to Morvan park. Lauren rides in the back of the trailer and pushes the foal down as hard as she can to keep the mare from pushing. (While I was getting the trailer she figured out that it wasn't breech, it was on it's back and the neck was deflected.)

We get to morvan park, and the vet starts telling me my options, and I was like "what is my best chance for a live mare and foal at the end" He says C section, I say "then do that!" They take the mare away and at about 3:15 the foal was born. Approx an hour and 20 minutes from the mare laying down.

It was amazing, and terrible to see my poor mare on her back with her innards hanging out while the vets struggled to get the foal out (she really is huge) and then they sewed her back up. The surgen found a tumor on her intestians, a lypoma? she said these fatty toumers can eventually strangulate the intestians and cause colic, so she took it off. Good for her!

So now we wait and see if the mare is ok, and the foal doesn't take to much of a dip at 12 hours, apparently these foals usually suffer a bit of backsliding in their condition at that time. And the mare has to pass the placenta, they are going to work on that this morning, the mare tried to prolapse her uterous on the table, so she wanted to give things a bit of time to settle down before she gives her oxytocin. So we know that could prove a tricky complication.

Thanks so much fpr all the jingling! They really need it.

I hope this story helps someone else.

Wow thank you so much for the whole story.

I find it so amazing that you kept your calm and were able to have the mare in the hospital and ready to be operated on a mere 1 hr and 20 minutes from the time she started. You deserve a pat on the back! I think shaking hands would of prevented me from even being able to hook up the truck and trailer.

Keep it up! I just got back from MP. THe Filly is doing very well, but Mystery (the mare) hasn't passed the placenta yet (so we are at about 20 hours) They weren't too concerned yet, though I am. She is getting lavage and oxytocin etc. though there is apparently a fine line as not to disrupt the incision. Otherwise she is doing well, and the filly is doing amazing!

I hooked up the trailer (a bumper pull) by myself and only had to get out and look once (I amazed even myself) I think I was just so focused on the task that I could block out all distractions in my head and concentrate. It was a scary time. My poor 3.5 year old son, He has never had his shoes on and gotten in the truck so fast in his life! He was a very good boy.

I had called a friend when I was calling everyone in the book to help, and she arrived just as we were pulling out of the drive to go to MP. She followed us down and watched Evan. The best part of it all was when I called her, the call went like this... "hi! it's me, can you come over here right now?" she said "Of course, I'm on my way." and hung up.

She didn't ask anything, I didn't have to explain anything, she just came. It really eased my mind to have her come, and saved me lots of time and energy not to have to explain. So you better believe that I am going to remember that when I get a call like that from someone.

Thanks so much for the jingles, I know they are helping her, and they are absolutly helping me.

Visited again this afternoon, just got back. Filly, a long legged thing of beauty, dark bay with a small sock on the left rear, is doing great! They couldn't be happier with her. And they all marval at what a great mother Mystery is, She gets right up when the foal wants to nurse, even when it is obvious she feels like crap! Mystery is a great mare.

She passed at least some placenta while I was there, at about 3:30. Almost exactly 24 hours after the foal was born. She has elevated pulses in her front feet, they are iceing them as a precaution. Her heart rate and respiration is also elevated, but that could be from the oxcitocin they gave to help pass the placenta. So things are looking up now that some placenta has passed, but they aren't great yet.

I spoke with the surgen in a moment of quiet at the hospital, She was very pleased at having delivered a live foal. She went on to say how unusual that was after a C section. When I asked why, she said it usually takes too long to get the mare to the clinic, either because of distance, or too much time taken trying to turn the foal, or the mare being unattended at the start. Apparently an hour from breaking water to the clinic was unusually fast.

I'm glad she didn't tell me that yesterday. It seemed like such a long time for everything to happen. I am just so thankful for the people that helped, and I hope Mystery makes it OK, and the filly continues to do well.

She needs a name. We have been calling her "Miracle". I'd like it to have some form of Mystery in it, as all her daughters carry that (The breeding is By Witty Boy aka Theodore, out of Land of Mystery).

dcm- Thanks. I've had enough crisises (what is the plural of crisis?) in my life to know you don't get anywhere falling apart... I also have a rule where I think through the worst case senarios and decide what I would do in advance. It is much easier to access stored info in the brain, than to try and make decisions on the spot. Sounds morbid, but it really helps.

Norsire- Horse placenta has to seperate on it's own, Human placenta can be manually removed. SOmething about the way it attaches to the wall? Equine Repro could probably fill us in on the details.

Any chance we could see some pictures?

How about "Mystery's Miracle"?

BTW, sadly but appropriately, I think I'm going to call Melody's baby (due next week) "Teddy's Last Laugh" or something like that--(there are a number of babies in the midwest with "wit" or something to do with humor in their names). And he was so full of joie de vivre. I hope the filly has gotten some of that from her dad.

So far the feet are OK, just the pulses causing some concern, she just seems wiped out, and she only gets a handful of grain every hour, and a flake of hay every 3 hours because of the surgury and making milk for that huge active baby is taking a lot out of her.

She isn't having any trouble getting up and down, she just seems to be doing what all new mothers try and do-rest when the baby rests.

Wynn- I think Teddy's Last Laugh is a great name! This filly is quite spunky, and is giving the staff a run for their money http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif We are so glad for that. It is hard to take good pics in the ICU! Mystery still has a piece of placenta, but her feet are less sore and pulses are down, still iceing the feet though. Filly is great!

I know you guys are helping her so much. Thanks.

Kids never appreciate what their mothers do for them...

When I was there this morning, it was time for Mystery's Lavage and antibiotic infusion, so someone was administering that while someone else held her head (not a hard job with Mystery) but Filly found a fun new game... Duck under Mom's belly back and forth! Filly doesn't really fit under, Mom has to suck her stomach up and I'm sure it really hurts her insicion, Poor mare http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif After the second time we blocked the path so Mystery could at least be spared that during her procedure.

But Mystery really looked and seemed much better this morning than she did yesterday afternoon.

Wynn/Esprit- "Wits about you" is currently the front runner for a name. Thanks for the suggestion.

You guys are so great!

Mystery is looking much better this morning, she has started to get control over the totally board filly, so she must be feeling better.

She still hasn't passed all of that last bit of placenta, but no fever, her feet are doing great, and she is looking brighter. They did oil her this morning to keep things moving, she isn't passing much manure (which is expected because she can't have much to eat yet) but that is simply a precaution.

The filly gets her last dose of antibiotics tomorrow, and she is doing great.

Hopefully soon we will be bringing them home.

I can't thank you all enough for being so supportive!

Well, things seem to be going well. The lavage has started to clear, so things are getting better in the uterous, they took the ice boots off today, and they got to go outside for a bit of a walk! Yipee!

They may get to come home on wednesday afternoon if the lavage looks good. Yipee! So it looks like we may be over the hump...<knock on wood>.

I'll try and get more pics tomorrow. We are thinking about naming her "Heir of Mystery" it is kind of a play on words because it sounds like "Air of Mystery". She still doesn't have a barn name either, but it will come. She couldn't be sweeter, just like her Mom.

May. 3, 2005, 08:01 AM
Bad news this morning. Mystery has developed colic. They currently think it is an impaction brought on by the general slow down of her gut from the surgury and the stall confinement. However, it might also be an adheision or some other surgical related problem.

So far she isn't super painful, but they can't feel or image a blockage. We are on a wait and see kind of holding pattern. I don't think Mystery can go through another surgury. She is just so tired. I'm going to start looking into nurse mares just in case.

It just seems so wrong for them to have come this far only to have this now.

We did everything we could, but Mystery was put down at about 3:45 this afternon. Classy to the end, she made sure not to step on, roll on, lay on, etc. the filly, even in her distress.

She was a wonderful, beautiful, amazing mare, and I was privilaged to have known her. She had two beautiful fillies and a colt while she was with me, and she did everything possible to get this second filly safely on the ground.

I think we are going to call the Filly "Phoenix" and register her as "Heir of Mystery"

Mystery- you will be missed, we will take good care of your baby, get some rest.

A nurse mare is on the way, and should be here in the morning, we should be bringing home the mare and Phoenix in the afternoon.

Thanks for all your prayers and jingles, they really mean alot.

Blue ~ I have been following this thread ever since the beginning and cheering for you, the little one, and her gallant, brave dam through each step.

I am so sorry for your poor mare; the weird thing was, when I read about the C-section I wondered about adhesions and colic, since the dam of one of my mares was lost the same way. But Mystery seemed to be doing so well, I was convinced you would have a better outcome.

It has been a very sorrowful time for you, but at least you must be grateful that Mystery did not give her life for nothing. You have a healthy, strong daughter of her's to carry on. I know it may not seem like much now, but I hope it comforts you somewhat.

THe nursemare is a bit cranky. She will let the foal nurse, but she is blindfolded, tied and hind legs hobbled, though not tightly. Of course, Phoenix is really excited to have someone to play with, and is also very excited to nurse, which adds to the mare's irritation.

So we left them at the hospital so they could sort them out. They decided to call the mare Blossom, as she didn't come with a name.

I have posted a few more pics here Phoenix and Blossom (http://community.webshots.com/album/338684639MqeKjD?626)

So hopefully this mare will just get on with mothering this filly so they can come home. Phoenix is really unfolding into everything I could have wanted. I can't wait to see her move.

Blueskidoo - I have been following this thread since the beginning and I must say you are a very strong person! I admire the way you have handled everything!!
I do want to know why do they blindfold the nursemare? I don't know anything about breeding or anything....Just wondering!

Blueskidoo
May. 4, 2005, 08:11 PM
Yes, the nursemare is as thin as she looks. I didn't expect we would get a show horse, but I did think the horse would be somewhat maintained... I am rather disapointed that I not only have to pay to lease the mare, get her pregnant again, but I also have to put weight on her and do things like shots, maybe her teeth etc. to ensure my foal is healthy.

But they got the mare here quickly, and she does let her nurse, and I am grateful to have her come and give her milk to my foal, I am a little shocked at her condition, and the fact she doesn't really come with any information-health records, when she had her foal, if she was on grass or not, etc...

They tie her in the stall so she can't chase the foal and hobble the hind legs so she can't cow kick her while she nurses. I believe the blindfold is to help keep her still and keep her from seeing that this isn't her foal. They also put vicks in her nose and on Phoenix's back to mask the smell.

Blueskidoo
May. 4, 2005, 08:16 PM
Just wanted to add... MP uses this service regularly, but getting the mare consists of calling the number and saying, bring a mare- we have a foal in need. The vet told them this was a big foal, and not to bring a small mare.

So at this end we get whatever they see fit to bring us. Alas, we had no control over the condition of the horse.

http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Color me surprised! YOU have to pay to get her bred again??? Your filly is adorable; I'm glad she's got a foster mom now to give her some company. I am a little shocked at how skinny poor Blossom is though. I would hope that most reputable nursemare farms would take better care of their stock.
A typical nursemare contract calls for the leasee to re-breed the mare before sending her back. Many farms that use the nursemares have a teaser stallion available, so there is no cost in getting the mare back in foal. Hopefully blueskidoo can find a similar arrangement.
Best of luck Blueskidoo...please keep updating us!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I am so glad that you found a mare and that your foal is nursing ... she'll fatten up quickly for you. I bet you can someone in your area who would live cover her for free for you. Maybe a teaser stallion at one of the local TB farms?

Blueskidoo
May. 5, 2005, 05:39 AM
I had considered asking a couple of TB farms if they would use a teaser, but I really don't want to take Phoenix off the farm for that. I'm going to ask my vet if they know of a young stallion they might be training to collect, or if not I'm going to use Fuertinzer (I know I can;t spell that) No offence to that lovely stallion, but he is inexpensive and quite potent by all accounts.

I just can't risk Phoenix picking up something at another farm, or getting injured on the trailer etc. I have too much invested in her (and I don't mean the money).

I hope I don't get flamed for this but...I use to work at MP and when I was there we used a woman named Dolly to get nurse mares in MD and maybe she is gone now, as she was in her sixties when I worked there, but her mares never looked like that..just the opposite!!! I also went to drop off a foal for Dolly to raise that lost it's dam one time and it was a donation mare so MP did not want to pay for a nurse mare..so the foal was sent to her to bucket feed and sell later as she pleased...her place was not fancy..far from it, but they were fed and in good condition! A mare that is that thin to start with, will not have a very good quality or quanity of milk in her condition and I'm so sorry, Bluekskidoo got this mare in such poor condition..when you have a nursing mare and she is already down...good luck feeding enough to catch her weight back up until she is weaned and getting her infoal that thin will be very difficult as well!!! That is a real rip off, that they sent you a mare in this condition. I've had several also from a farm in KY and they never looked like that either! And the blindfolding..not sure who's briliant idea that is, but is not necessary and quite frankly is cruel. I have worked with several nurse mares at MP and a few here on my farm for clients and I NEVER blindfolded the poor mare..come on!!! You do have to wobble them to prevent kicking and if they are bitting either a muzzle or a neck rack so they can't turn to bite the foal. Once turned out in a field I find the mare's get very bonded and run after the foal to protect it and are less bonded while in the stall! JMHO!
I got a mare in from KY to breed with a foal at side and she was 30 days from foaling and only a bit thin and I'm feeding her 20 quarts per day and she is on my lush pasture and she has not gained an ounce here, but is maintaing..I can't imagine getting that mare to pick up with a nursing foal!!! Bluekskidoo once you get them home if you need help with mare and foal, please call me, I will be happy to help you with some of the methods for the nurse mare and foal to get them to the point they are VERY bonded and need no devices!!!

I appreciate all of you who are still with us on our journey. It has been a long road, but we are getting closer. It is very nice to be able to share here, and I appreciate all your thoughts and wishes.

Blossom is coming around. I was there this morning, and they are going to quit with the ace (she wasn't getting much) and try to take off the hobbles this afternoon. Blossom has started to act more like a mother and is standing guard over the filly when she sleeps. That is an excellent sign! So we are down to the hobbles to keep her from kicking (the mare is free in the stall). So looking good for tomorrow to be homecoming. I have made an appointment for Blossom to have a health check and shots etc. on Wednesday, and I am arranging for someone to come do her feet as soon as possible. She is doing us a huge favor, and we want her to know we appreciate it.

They took a look at Mystery's gut, and found that she had a compleate twist and things were already quite bad in there, even though she wasn't indicating that much pain. So surgury probably wouldn't have saved her, and even if it had, she would have been very sick for a long time. So we fought the good fight, but made the right call at the end.

Thank you all for everything, I'll keep you up to date as we bring her home!

I'm so sorry you lost that special mare, I really am http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif. Pheonix seems like she's a fighter, and with the blessing of the nurse mare (thin or not), it's seeming like you will have a wonderful filly to carry on mom's legacy!

Blueskidoo
May. 5, 2005, 10:20 AM
I posted at the same time as Norsire, but I want to say again... I have no experience with nursemares. I elected to have them stay the extra day (the vet felt I could "manage it" but I can't sit by the stall every minute and watch them, I am a stay at home mom with a child to watch) because I want them "together" before I have to do it all by myself. And I was there while she was blindfolded, and she was eating hay and totally fine, cruel is not the word I would use.

Please, I am just as upset about the nursemare as all of you, but don't turn this into a thread about nursemares and how they are treated. I will do the best I can by Blossom. I have no control over the nursemare buisness, or anything like that, so please, if you all want to discuss those issues, start a new thread. I can't really handle all those issues right now.

What Norsire says about the condition of the mare and the nutrition of the milk is accurate, I am sure. May. 5, 2005, 10:54 AM
No one is jumping on Norsire. I have spoken to her by phone (I have another mare in foal to Zilly, and a season to PWG this year). I appreciate her offer to help etc. I am aware of the issues with the mare and her milk etc...

But the bottom line is I have to play the hand I've been delt, Blossom and all. I can't control how the mare is treated at MP, and what ever they did seems to be working. I can't conrol the mare I recieved, no one at MP is happy about them and their conditions.

I just don't want this thread to spin out of control on issues I can't deal with or control. I would welcome you all to start another thread and talk about nursemares. I was told Blossom could probably be had quite cheaply at the end of the season, so if any of you are interested in a belgian draft mare after I have fixed her up, please let me know.

I had a friend that worked at New Bolton during foaling season a few years ago. We were talking about C-sections and she said that all of the horses that had C-sections while she was working there never made it. In a lot of cases she said they just euthanized the mare after they delivered the foal...either because they didn't think the mare would survive or because the owner didn't want to spend the money.

I was so happy when I heard Mystery was doing well...I was jingling for her. I am very sorry to hear that she didn't make it. But, you did everything that you could and sometimes thats all we can do. <<hugs>>

I'm sorry to see that the nursemare is so skinny, but you have no control over that. I certainly understand that you don't want to risk your filly's health by doing live cover at a "strange farm." If you can I would try to consider an inexpensive breeding that would result in a "worthwhile" foal. A lot of people like TB draft crosses.

I'd also pay close attention to the filly's nutrition...I don't know how long the nurse mare has been lactating, but milk quality diminishes after a few months. Maybe somebody who's better versed in nutrition can chime in.

Norsire, Dolly passed away a from cancer in 2002. She lived just a few minutes away from me. I board a horse that is a 1/2 Arab that was bred by Dolly, but she passed away before he was born (May 2003). The colt I board is a product of one of her TB nursemares that she bred to a very nice local Arab...therefore the colt has 1/2 Arab papers. I never met Dolly, but I've always heard nice things and I know a few people that have bucket babies that came from her farm.

Blue...<<hugs>> again and I'm sure you're excited to have the filly home! I'm looking forward to lots of pics!

Blue, by any chance did that nurse mare come from Central NY? (Sorry if I missed that location.) There WAS a nursemare farm up there that had a tendency to provide mares in a similar condition, but I thought they'd gone (or been "run") out of business.

On breeding her back to something: I'd gladly offer you some of my young guys stuff if I could get it to you inexpensively. Don't make a decision too soon--you've undoubtedly been through enough, financially! If we put our minds to it, I'd think we (on this BB) might be able to come up with something in your area. (You/they don't really care what she's bred back to, yes--or no?). For example, I know/knew an Appy breeder outside of Thurmont who might be accomodating.

The mare came out of Kentucky. Apparently they have 600 mares there, they try and provide them within a week from foaling themselves (I have no idea if that's true, I know nothing about anything). She is at least guarenteed to accept the foal within 10 days or they will swap her out. Honestly, I try not to think about the whole nursemare thing if I can avoid it, I feel terrible that Blossom had to give up her foal for mine.

They don't care what she's bred to, I'd like to be able to put that "worthwhile" foal on the ground, if only to ease my mind on the whole "nursemare" thing. I am totally open to suggestions, and would appreciate help in that department, though as I mentioned, the fall back plan is Fuertinzer, as he is shipping at the cost of collection, though I somehow feel like I am using them if I end up doing that, as I'm sure they want to attract a different clientel.

I am so traumatized by the entire experience I can hardly think straight. My heart bleeds for Mystery, my eyes weep for Phoenix, I feel terrible for Blossom and her plight, I hardly know what day it is.

Cupid has arrived at the stall, and we have a bond!

Blossom has decided to mother Phoenix! MP called and said they are devoted to each other, and the mare is totally free in the stall and I hope to bring them home in the morning! Yeah!

Finally something is working http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I am so relieved.

blueskidoo, First I would like to say again how sorry I am over you loss.I feel bad that I couldn't help when you needed it. Now, most of all after I read what has happened. On the plus side the foal has a mom again. I know you have been through alot, but others have brougt up different points about Nursemares and even you I'm sure have questions. I would be glad to help out in that department if I could. I can't seem to post a new topic but I can reply. Seems my webtv isn't up to it. So If someone could start a new topic about Nursemares maybe I can answer some questions. If I don't have the answers, I'll call Sandy (on the road) and get them. She is so bussy this time of the year. She was in Md. day befor yesterday, yesterday in NY and will be in Md again this weekend with two. Tonite she is heading to RI. If you get a chance call the two people I mentioned in the email and ask how Sandys Nursemares except their orphan foals. I think a new topic on Nursemares could help alot of people that have questions. Again if someone starts it I'll do what I can.

NO, I don't think so! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif And thanks so much for putting me on the spot here! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif As stated above Blueskidoo and I do communicate by phone...I think we could work that out if desired. I personally would never breed one of my stallions to a nurse mare, that I know will be kept in the conditions that they are and then the foal is born to only be ripped away for another foal that lost it's dam!!! To then be bucket fed and end up at a market for possible meat..sorry just me and I could not do that with a valuable stallion or to one of his future foals. I do know we need nurse mares, but the best thing for a nurse mare is a nice teaser that deserves some relief for his well done job of teasing mare after mare and never getting to finish the job! Also, you can do shipped semen..it is not like a nurse mare has to be live covered!!! So anyone else here want to donate their stallion for this???? http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/uhoh.gif

And Carosello on page 8 of this thread, Pwynnorman offered this

quote:

On breeding her back to something: I'd gladly offer you some of my young guys stuff if I could get it to you inexpensively.

So, I guess it is taken care of.

Please, if someone wants to help they can contact me personally. I don't want anyone to feel put out, put on the spot, or anything.

Norsire has been very helpful by phone, and I totally understand that she wouldn't want to use one of her stallions, I totally understand that the services of a stallion are a service that is paid for. While I probably could call around and get a teaser to LC Blossom for free, I'm not going to to move Phoenix from her pasture for that.

I can handle the terms of the nursemare contract, any assistance should be freely given, I'm not here to get anything but a shoulder to cry on.

Thank you all for your contiued support, and I am contiually amazed at how many views this thread has had, and I am grateful for all your support.

Phoenix and Blossom are home! I ordered a muzzle for Blossom (when you see the grass in the pics you'll understand) and we are going to try and ease her into this "all the food you can eat" without causing her any trouble.

I am terrible with the digital camera, the delay causes me to have endless pics of headless horses where they bit a fly as I was pressing etc. I'll try to get some better ones later. At home! (http://community.webshots.com/album/339519092qOmuNI?341)

The but... from the subject is that Blossom has an upper respiratory infection from the shipping and her poor condition etc. So now I'm going to argue with the nursemare farm about the bill for that. If I wasn't glad I left them yesterday, I am very glad now! Blossom is on medication, and they don't think Phoenix is at risk, but I will be keeping a very close eye on her.

It has become very surreal here, If I don't laught about Blossom being sick, I'll have a breakdown. (of course she's sick! How dare I think this nightmare might be over!)

Blue, you have shown the upmost class and compassion throughout this horrible ordeal. If I was anywhere near you I would take Blossom off your hands after Phoenix is weaned.

And, although he's not an "offical" WB, I will offer a free breeding to my Akhal Teke stallion, Kinor if you will pay for the collection ($150 per collection). He's a cremello, very athletic, super movement and natural jumping ability. His "uncle" was long-listed for the Olympics in eventing. I've attached a photo.

PT me if you don't come up with a better option.

Meanwhile, give those Nursemare people who sent you Blossom of piece of your mind and tell them if they don't reduce the bill you will actually tell people who they are!!

I for one would like to seek them out and kick their b*tt for treating Blossom this way.

Good luck...you are WAY overdue for some smooth sailing right about now.

Talloaks- I would have given my left arm for Blossom to have gotten sick before they bonded, so I would have any excuse to send her back, but now that they have bonded (and Blossom was so sweet with her getting out of the hospital, and getting into the field, and showing her around) I just can't break them up.

I do hope to find someone who might want her so she doesn't have to go back there. I would have had to pay to ship her back, so I'll kick in some to ship her if someone pays to spring her. (I'll ask what that is when I call to yell at them) PT me if you might be interested.

Kyzteke- What a lovely stallion! What a generous offer! I have always liked A. Tekes, especially how they glisten in the sun. He would probably make a very nice foal with Blossom, lighten her up a bit. And a guarenteed Palomino to boot... Hmmm-maybe someone would really want her bred to him! I just hate the thought I have to send her back there.

It is very nice to see them so peaceful in the field, and Blossom surrounded by food, and enjoying the sun and the breeze... much more like what foals are supposed to have.

Norsire
May. 6, 2005, 12:57 PM
Now, if Blossom was bought by someone up front and guaranteed to not go back to the hell hole she came from..then I would donate a breeding to Gold Card, to see her get a nice home with someone on the COTH BB or just any buyer that would keep her and the foal and not return her!!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif So, you now have three offers and maybe you can let the person, who buys her decide which one she wants...pywnnnorman's stallion, Kyzteke't stallion, or Norsire's stallion and let them choose which one they would want a foal by...now that sounds good. I just could not personally breed mare that might go back there, for the future foals sake. I have an idea Blueskidoo is not going to be able to send her back either! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Please let us know what the @#$%$^ want for her, to not return home!!!

In the future, maybe you could adopt a nurse mare foal and give it a good start as a thank you to Blossom. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif In the meantime, I'm going to be really selfish. Breed her back to Feuer and tell me the contact info and approximate foaling date. I'm hoping to adopt a nurse mare foal some day and it might as well be one from as nice a stallion as Feuer!

You know, some wise guy asked me a while ago why I was so supportive of the US breeder.

THIS is why.

And if anyone gives me any cr@p about how nasty and ugly the breeding forum can get, they can go ... take a long walk off a short pier. And I'll help 'em too.

Breeding takes a kind of courage ... and patience that not many people have. Blueskidoo, you've been through so much, and 'you're still standing.' Perhaps on shaky legs ... but you've got lots of hands here ready to make sure you don't fall.

Actually, I doubt she is a palie. She looks like a Belgian to me, and they have that sorrel/flaxen thing going. I don't know that much about Belgians, but I don't think they "naturally" come as palies. BUT, bred to a dilute (either Kinor or Gold Card) she has a 50-100% chance of producing one!

Norsire ~ I had doubts about letting her go back to the horrible place as well...but here's hoping someone will see the potenial and buy her, then choose the stallion. If they want her bred to Kinor, I'd even give a deep discount for a rebreeding the next year IF they were keeping her.

Blue, first off, Heir of Mystery is just lovely and a lucky girl to have you. Congratulations. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Second, I know I can't be the only one who sees the kindness and sweetness in Blossom's eyes/expression. Sure, she needs TLC, but I think Blue is going to do well by her in that department. She has had a rough life and I hope that someone here can see fit to give her a good home. I hope that she can forever live out her days with the love, generosity and kindless that this mare has given to those foals who have needed it. I wish I could be the one to help this mare and give her a home.

I do have a question though, if the mare were promised a home before your filly is weaned, does she HAVE to be bred back? In a way, I kind of think it would be nice for this sweet mare to be able to bring up her own foal, but I also think it would be nice for her life to be about HER as well.

Good luck with her Blue and GOOD FOR YOU for taking such good care of this sweet mare.

I am overwhelmed by the support everyone has given me. It is very kind of you all to be so supportive.

Norsire- thanks so much for your offer for Gold Card! I'm sure they would be a lovely match too!

If someone wants Blossom, then no, she doesn't have to be bred back, but I don't know what would happen to her if I don't breed her back, and return her. I am getting up the energy to call the nursemare people and yell at them. I hope we can find her a nice home.

Our first full day at home!

Phoenix wore her first halter today, for about 20 minutes, and it didn't even phase her. She and Blossom are totally in love, and all is well. I spent a couple of hours just hanging around with them, which was very calming. Phoenix spent about 20 minutes laying with her head pressed against my leg which was so special. (she layed down so I went up and sat by her)

Now that I am not just hating that Blossom isn't Mystery, and seeing Phoenix with "that other horse" isn't so jarring, I took a real look at her today.

Blossom is quite a nice horse! She appears sound, in spite of her feet, she seems to have good conformation, they trotted a bit today and I was surprised at how nice a mover she was. She leads fine, and loaded on the trailer with little fuss. Her tail is docked, so at some time I would guess she was owned by someone who took care of her, maybe she is harness trained? She is at least 17 hands now, The top of my head is 17 hands, and she about level with that or a bit more, and when she is up to snuff weight wise, she may be a bit more.

I also looked at her teeth, and she is a young horse. No galven's (is that right?) groove, and quite a steep angle on her front teeth. I would guess 6 or 7, but the vet sould be able to give a better estimate on Wednesday.

She is beeing a very sweet mother, and so gentle. Before they were bonded, Blossom bit Phoenix kind of hard on the rump while she was nursing. This morning Phoenix was being a bit rough and Blossom turned to nip her, and Phoenix kicked her in the front leg with her little baby leg! It was the funniest thing. Phoenix sure is a fiesty one, but she wouldn't have made if she was anything less. I am glad Blosson is turning out to be such a nice mother, Mystery was the best mother ever, and I would have been so unhappy to have Phoenix raised by a witch.

Hey, Blue! Glad Phoenix is doing well. AND SHE HAS A NEW BROTHER!

I had the vet out for a diarhea "emergency" on another horse last night, and we walked past Melody's stall--the mare seemed asleep with her head on the door. We finish drenching the filly and hear moans coming from the stall next door! Vet says, nah, not this early in the evening (8:30), but she was sure wrong: 11 minutes from the time we saw the sack to the hind legs clearing the mare!

I was sooo worried because of poor Mystery's bad luck! These last Teddibabies are just little gifts in my mind! I think of Phoenix as Teddy and Mystery "rising" up again, reincarnated through her. This new colt, "Coda," is the end of the line for me. I do hope Phoenix will be just the beginning for you! And, hey, they look a amazingly alike, too!

Blueskidoo
May. 9, 2005, 04:22 PM
Wynn- So glad to hear your mare had the quick easy birth they all deserve. Congrats on your new colt! (that is what you wanted, a male to carry the line?)

Phoenix did the most spectacular capriole in the field today, I wish I'd had the camera with me. She is so athletic. Blossom is perking up, now that she get fed. She nickered to me this morning. She used to just stare in disbelief when I put feet in her pan, now she follows along like a normal horse and waits for me to put it in.

I'm glad Blossom is feeling better. She is so itchy from her skin problems. I hope to give her a bath tomorrow, that would make her feel better. I also need to figure out something for her tail, it is docked so she doesn't have much swish back there. Any ideas?

Things are starting to be more on an even keel here. I can pet Blossom and not cry for Mystery.

Sunday is my birthday. I was thinking about going out and drinking a tost to Mystery. Anwhere in the greater Leesburg or Frederick area that might be suitable for this? Anyone want to join me? I am much more in tune with playplaces...

Wash her is a betadine solution, and after washing her tail (and that solution should help) try sprinkling lime dust in it. Helps keep the itchies away.

May the force be with you, and all of us here that post are thinking of you.

I have been out of town for a week and I have just, for maybe the first time, read through all of the pages of a long post and I have cried and I have "yayed" and all I can say is that this is one sad/wonderful/bold/courageous story! Dang - way to go Heir of Mystery and speed you on to all the dear departed sweet Mystery and Phoenix, may you love your sweet young charge!

Your filly looks VERY happy and contented! And I'm sure Blossom will be eternally grateful to you for the good care you are giving her. You are certainly an inspiration with the way you have handled all of this.

I hope you have a wonderful birthday!

Blue - love that picture. They both look very content! I am sure Mystery would be very proud of her filly and Blossom. Have a wonderful birthday and I will tip back an ice cold diet coke on Sunday in honor of Mystery! (diet coke is as good as it gets these days!)

http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif What a GREAT shot of such a fighting filly, and a generous soul of a mare. I am glad that Blossom is brightening up. Good for you. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thanks for all your continued support. I can't begin to express how great you all have been.

I finally got some pics where you can see Phoenix! check them out here Phoenix (http://community.webshots.com/album/342807381iViupr?737)

She is so sweet, and easy to deal with, I am awed at how beautiful she is. Mystery's temperment really shines through.

Phoenix has two cowlicks on her forehead, one above the other. Does that mean anything?

Blossom had a bath today. Not the worlds greatest bath, but she seems to be less itchy. THe vet sees her tommorow. While she was snoozing when I took these pics, I sat on her and she wasn't botherd at all. Once she gains some weight and is healthy I may see if she's broke to ride.

What a sweet nursemare Blossom is. I am sure she probably thinks sh's dies and gone to heaven. What a wonderful outcome for her and little Phoenix.

If I ever thought I'd do another ET in the future I would take Blossom off your hands. I doubt you'll have any problem placing her if she checks out healthy. Best of luck with her!
