I'm thinking about taking our 2009 Half Welsh colt (soon to be gelding) to a few Welsh shows this year...more for experience away from home than anything. I'm not out to win any ribbons but give him experience...we bred him to be my sons pony so I just want some miles on him...
How do I turn him out? Braided or just neatly pulled? Nice leather halter or english bridle? I really don't want to go out and buy a special in-hand bridle. I don't want to make a big turnout mistake in the process though!
Thanks!!

If it were a Welsh show over here then it's the same for any native breed pony and au natural with the mane loose and long and just tidied and likewise with the tail.

Over here and on the east coast, for the most part, the half welsh show like hunter ponies. Braided mane and tail (optional) and an english bridle. No need to buy a Welsh inhand bridle. Good luck and have fun - the Welsh shows are great!

Some shows are different from others. Check with previous exhibitors at that show and see what they have done.

Good info from quicksilverponies and gothedistance.

On the west coast, ponies are very seldom braided, but I've noticed a big difference on the east coast, where it seems that most of the B's and Half Welsh are shown braided.

I am on the West Coast. I always showed my Half-Welsh in a dark, well fitted hunter bridle with a braided mane and tail. I was often the only one braided. I feel a neat braid job completes the picture.

I've shown Half Welshes. My filly is shown braided, feathers clipped, tail banged, etc.. When she was a weanling last year, I used a black leather halter, and black leather lead shank. This year I splurged and bought her an in hand halter, very fancy. I think a nice leather halter would be fine :) I definitely wouldn't show a yearling in a normal bridle (yes, I know it's sometimes done, but there is no reason for it IMO). It drives me crazy not showing ponies braided. When I was showing my Section A, he had to show with hair (A's are supposed to be shown like that), it drove me CRAZY.

Here is my weanling last year at a Welsh show:

Banging the tail is not necessary. :)
