View Full Version : Favorite Rain Sheet For Turn-Out

I am looking for a rain sheet to use for turn-out in the spring and fall. I need something durable but would prefer not to spend a lot for it. I was looking at the Roustabout that Smartpak carries but it seems a bit pricey at $160. I guess, though, if it holds up well and the waterproofing lasts it might be worth the $$.

I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions here, but I really enjoy the Orican high neck (by weatherbeeta) sheets. They have a mesh lining, the padded wither protection, elastic leg straps, easy to close and open front, and they hold up really well. I got mine for $115 from Valley Vet with free shipping. I'm sure if you did a search on google for them you'd find a decent price. Horseloverz.com has the Pessoa Alpine turnout sheet on sale for $144. Also have to give the Baker turnout sheet some props, usually around $130, but mine has held up for 3 years now and I just put another waterproof coating on it, just for insurance. It fits every horse I've put it on. Don't forget to check ebay, never know what you can find!

I have this sheet:

Go to the very bottom, the "Waterproof Turnout Sheet", the silver one. It only comes in green, though.
I can't think of one other store that has a 1680D BALLISTIC NYLON sheet for $100. I love it, it's SUPER heavy-duty and the hardware on it is great. The drop on it is also very long, which for my wide as a tank horse is great. It wraps around her belly really nicely.

If you want to go a little less expensive than that, I have a Saxon TO sheet that I also like a lot. It's 1200D, and I paid $60 for it. They're kind of hard to find though, they make a 600D that's much more popular. My mare shredded the 600D one, though. :(
The Saxon is the opposite of the sheet I listed above, it has a rather short drop, but it still fits my mare just fine. :)

Not when you consider the life in them.
I bought my first Rambo Wug sheets 6 years ago. They still look and act like new.
My neighbor has bought a new "cheap" rain-sheet every year for the past 6 years. She's spent more than double my initial investment.

I have several, and I actually prefer our local brand to the rhinos and amigos.

I LOVE the way it fits snug up their neck, and I have one that is 7 years old - never been re-waterproofed and still going strong. Have washed it with regular detergent as well.
The amigo is nice too, but I find it isnt quite as waterproof and it ripped after a year.
Dont like the Rhinos - for what I paid for it, its really not as waterproof as it should be.
I have a Rambo as well, No problems with it at all - but for $200 LESS, the Greenhawk brand works just as well.

You can get a Rhino sheet for around $153.00. Mine has been waterproof through many rain and snow storms. The exterior has a few snags but my guy plays with his clothes and so does his pasture mate. If you don't have two geldings that are hell on wheels, go for it.
I do have a MW Rambo that is much more durable. For next year I'll upgrade to the Rambo sheet. Nothing has been able to penetrate the outside of that and it practically repels water. IMO, it was worth the money. The fit is nice too.

I've been happy with my rider's international supreme with gussets. I think they are on sale now for $80 or so and we get a lot of rain here in the PNW.

I have a big d sheet that i love for my morgan gelding.
and i LOVE the amigo 600 D lite sheets- they are perfect for pishy seattle weather that we get right about this time through May-June. it gets too warm for a sheet, but then the heavens open and they need one, otherwise they are all shivers and not bright enough to go to their shelter. the 600 d is light enough to not worry about them getting too warm during the day.

Schneiders has a StormShield breeze on closeout for $49.95. I have two of these and love them--they are good for layering and do the job in the pouring rain. I have washed them and they are still waterproof.

:sigh: Those Rambos are expensive, but they last and last. They are difficult to kill.

LOVE my Schneiders sheets - years of use, still waterproof, great warranty on the stormshields (usually 2 years), high denier and they stay waterproof and I don't whimper when I pay for them.
I will say there are higher end Schneiders (like the stormshield) and then there are the lower cost ones (dura-tech). I think duratech was a fine choice for the yearling to now 3 year old years. A blanket outgrown in a year (or half a season for that matter  ) needs to be cheap, not durable in my world. But I am not a fan of the dura-techs unless its a growing horse.

DMK is right. I also have Rambo's and trust these cheap sstack blankets more for waterproof layering.

I can only recommend what not to get-- the Horseware Amigo. I am on my third since October as they keep leaking. Dover has been wonderful about sending me new ones, but I am totally over these sheets. I will be putting my money into a Rhino-- they are waterproof and last for ages.

You're in luck if you're a 72... http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productclassid=5278
I like the Orican's for their value. Just made it through winter #3 with my midweight one. My old trainer was throwing out an un-lined one that was torn, but the tears was pretty straight so I sewed it up and that one is going on two years post-tear. Not sure how long she originally had it.
I was NOT happy with the heavy weight Tough One I bought this winter. The stitching is AWFUL and there is not enough stretch in the leg straps.

In another week or two you may be able to find a Rhino or rambo for your price....don't they normally go on sale at this time of year? Afew years ago I bought a Riders warmblood size84...they have discontinues that exact sheet but I see they have a new one. The one I had was fabulous!
