After much thought and coth discussion I bought a couple rolls of the blue Ice Tape from Dovers. It's inexpensive, hoping it works, etc. Well, it just came today and I'm impressed. Its much heavier and thicker than expected and you can feel the coolness in the gel. Horsies legs were considerably cooler after 20 mins. Easy to wrap, and I love that they conform better than an ice boot, but I do wish they came with a closure, I had to wrap over them to keep them on. I might rig something quicker. Just wanted to give a shout out to a good product.

I've used it and it's not very effective. It is DEFINTELY nowhere near as cold as ice or even water from the hose. It didn't stay cool more than a few minutes, it's difficult to apply, and kinda messy. I wan't impressed. I threw it away after the third use.

I have to agree with Tiffani B, I had bought it several years ago to use on my gelding and I had a lot of problems with it. I agree that it didn't seem to stay cold very long. I was also using it in the summer so that may have had something to do with it.
But after being on my horse's leg for about 3-5 minutes it was quite warm. I did like that it stuck to itself though. There were also some times were the tape stuck to itself during unwrapping and I think it would have ripped if I had "manhandled it."
I usually use a couple of bags of frozen peas or corn from the grocery store, they conform nicely to leg and are inexpensive and refreezable- and if I got super hungry at the barn and absolutely had to eat I could nuke them

Frozen peas! Brilliant! I do that for the kiddos (the human children) when they get bumps and such... hadn't thought about using it on horses.
Thanks!

I tossed out the ice tape too. It was kind of gooey. And did not stay cold long at all.
You can make an ice bag or pea bag. (pea, not pee) quite easily for almost any part of a leg, btw.
Take a section of tarp or IV bag. It should be about 6 inches wide and 12 inches long. Run a strip of the heavy duty stick on velcro, top, bottom and at the whole length of each edge. Sort of like just creating your own sock. Put it on, secure with velcro and either pour crushed ice in or you can slip in the small bags of peas.
Cheap and easier than trying to wrap the peas on.

I just keep a couple of the blue ice soft gel packs in my freezer. They were pretty cheap and are easy to wrap on.

If you're icing a hoof or any part of the leg, a bell boot works great. Put it on upside down, duct tape the bottom (well, the top, which is now on the bottom) to the leg/hoof, put crushed ice in bags or the blue ice gel packs into the boot and wrap upwards onto the leg.
