View Full Version : My mare lost her foal at 300 days...update #50 and more about my mare
scribbles

My mare lost her foal at about 300 days day before yesterday after having bagged up about 3 days before that, and retained a good portion of her placenta. She is struggling a little bit with everything, we have been flushing her and she is on antibiotics, but she has a really dull depressed look to her and is a little colicky. The vet is coming out again this afternoon to look at her.
Jingles for my mare and for her recovery please.
This was to be my only foal this year, and the first one out of this very special mare to me.

:cry::cry:condolences and all the best for your mare - we lost our foal last weekend at 308 days - he survived for 3 days - with constant attention - could not yet stand but we were feeding him goat colostrum and doing everything in our power - day 2 he looked pretty good and was even playing - but he crashed on day 3 and even the mare knew.
She had placentitis but at least she expelled all the placenta - the foal was born without any assistance and weighed about 80 lbs. We had him wrapped in doggie blankets.
For three days weat least had some hope - but no sleep.
I so feel for you - we were really excited about this foal - out of a rio grande mare by a dutch wb stallion - he was absolutely beautiful.
Our mare is okay - she was a maiden 4 yr old with her first foal. She will now go into work though.
Best of luck for your mare - it is just heartbreaking and I am still not over it.

I am so sorry about your loss and hope that your mare is okay.
One of mine has bagged up early (not due until March 20); I am very worried about her. She left for the vet's clinic this morning to foal out there (hopefully will hang on for at least another 10 days or so).

Heartbreaking news -- I am so sorry for the loss of your foal. I lost one during a foaling gone very bad many years ago, but I still remember the deep sadness I felt. Jingles for your mare -- take care.

Oh no, that is awful news, I am so sorry for your loss.
We had a mare that aborted undetected twins this time last year and retained the placenta for 6 days, saved the mare - our vet is extremely knowledgable about this situation and may be able to give help if you need it.
PM me if you would like the protocol we used which was a success for our mare. I can put you in touch with our vet who I am positive will be glad to help if you feel you need it.

hoping your mare gets better soon.
They do grieve too. It sounds kind of silly, but crying *with* them seems to help a little.
It's so hard to come SO far then lose what would otherwise be a perfect foal.

I had one lose her foal last year at day 314 with a very bad dystocia (foal had died and was aborted, not in position at all). She also retained her placenta for 5 days. She went to New Bolton for treatment. They had her on a very aggressive antibiotic treatment, banamine, and very frequent flushes. They also put her in ice boots as a precaution on the 2nd day because she developed a slight pulse in her feet.
She did finally pass all the placenta, but it took a while.
Jingling for you mare. So sorry for the loss of the foal--I can truly understand.

Thank you all... The vet was just out and did another flush, he says that it is going in a positive direction, but we will not know for sure for another couple days.
It was very heartbreaking, she was standing over the baby and didnt want me to take it out of the stall, so I do believe that she is grieving just as much as I am.
Thank you so much, it is such great help to have all of this support.

We got a big chunk of placenta out today, and things are looking like they are moving along well in that regard...
We did have a bit of a scary colic episode last night, it ended up being a slight impaction which seems to have been resolved with tubing with oil.
Thanks for all of the jingles! I really appreciate it!
So many people keep asking me if I am going to breed her back again this year, what are your views on that... as long as she recovers of course.

I had a mare who had a dystocia and lost her foal. She was in the hospital for 2 weeks with retained placenta. The vet said she was squeeky clean and breedable. She did get in foal on one insemination but lost it somewhere along the way. We weren't checking as she kept gaining weight like she was in foal.
Due to the economy, I left her open last year and would like to try this year.

How is she today? Fingers crossed and jingling as well. :)
Edited to add: We re-bred our mare in May after the January episode... she got in foal the first try but lost it very soon after (pregnancy looked like it was fading when we checked her at 14 days). I have to say she was 19, so that didn't help, but she was then more than ever retaining a lot of fluid and had a couple new cysts. We used oxytocin like mad and tried 2 more times with no luck... obviously could be age but I think there was some damage from the whole ordeal. We are going to u/s this year and see what is going on, perhaps she needed more time to heal. ?

We are the ones that lost a foal at 308 and thought I would touch base on the issue of rebreeding the mare. Our mare was only 4 and the plans were to put her to work after the foal. So we are not rebreeding the mare - I will move the breeding to another mare.
Perhaps in the future I will rebreed the mare but I really what to see want she can do and I want to put her to work.
Good luck with your mare. Glad she doing okay

My mare lost her foal at 332 in 2008....really thought we were safe when she got so far along. She also retained a bit of the placenta and it took almost a week to get it all out. She was due late enough in the year that I didn't try and re-bred her....she is also a competition horse so it wasn't that hard of a choice...she just went back to work. She caught just fine in 2009....and is due soon. I've got everything crossed for a better outcome this year!
So sorry for your loss...it is so hard when they get so close. Mine was a maiden and luckily didn't seem to understand what had happened. Anyway, focus on getting her healthy first...and then make your decision re-breeding...you still have some time. Good luck!

We got another big chunk today and am crossing my fingers that the flush will run clear tommorow!!
With this mare, my only real choice with her now is to breed, she had a big fall while being leased to do my friends A ponyclub test, and tore her medial and lateral colateral ligaments in her hock, badly enough that she wont ever be *quite right* again ,and after being a 4'6 horse for so long, and doing so well, (and her mother produced several other nice competition horses, as well as her mothers sisters, and my mare, Wonderful's sisters have had a couple nice horses as well) I figured she is probably a good mare to breed! So, I guess if everything goes well, I will try and breed her back in a couple months.
