My six-year-old TB mare was injured in a pasture accident a little more than five weeks ago. She cut her back left leg and the vet was out right away and stitched her up. At the time the vet expressed concern that she had nicked the tendon sheath but when she did an ultrasound three weeks later she said the tendon looked good. The wound is now completely closed and has healed well.
I started hand walking her after the ultrasound and for five days she's been on limited turn-out for about five hours per day, first in a small pen and now in a small paddock with a shelter. I've also been walking her under saddle since Tuesday.
Since the accident she has had a support wrap on the injured leg and a standing bandage on the other. Now that's she's being turned out she has really been enjoying her rolls (much more so than before) and the wraps were getting wet and filthy. Two nights ago I removed them and everything looked good yesterday.
When I went to bring her in yesterday afternoon it was very windy and she started running around like a nut job when she saw me. It's a bit muddy in the paddock but she managed to stay on her feet and I managed not to have a heart attack.
This morning when I turned her out the injured leg was stocked up. There's no heat and she's completely weight bearing on it (which she has been nearly since the day of the accident).
I'm going back in about an hour to walk her and hope that the exercise plus being turned out will help but I was just wondering it is not unusual for them to stock up after having their support wraps removed.
