Well folks, here we go again. Maybe Mr. Applesauce and I are gluttons for punishment but we are trying again. We now have in our custody (temporary of course) a beautiful 3 month baby boy. We are calling him Cory short for his real name. He has blue eyes and has a skin condidtion from neglect thus how he came into the care of Social Services. But it's curable and nothing a little love won't take care of.

So here we go again. Since we still get to keep Nikki Leigh from time to time we will tell her that Corey is her little "cousin" and that when they grow up they are just going to have to SHARE the pony. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Wish us luck and jingles, I'll keep you posted as things progress. We just got him today. Just a little background info...he has 5 other brothers and sisters that had to be removed on an emergency basis because of abuse and neglect. They have found foster homes for the other kids so they are in good shape now too.

Let me tell you, this poor child has lived a full life already and BOY does he have a set of lungs on him! *phew* He's sleeping now, thank goodness. He has the biggest broadest smile that lights up his whole face! Poor little man...he's coverd in the worst diaper rash imaginable, was in a urine soaked car seat...I mean SOAKED and his bed was urine soaked. It's no wonder he has such a bad rash. He goes to the doctor tomorrow for a check up.

I have two appts tomorrow to go see some horses for sale so Mr. A will be playing Mr. Mom while I'm gone. As long as Cory is fed, he's a happy baby. I'll try to get pics posted tomorrow night.

Applesauce, you're truly an angel. That poor child. I'm praying things work out for the best for Cory and for you and Mr. Applesauce.

Baths with baking soda help a diaper rash, if I remember correctly (it's been awhile). Plain ol' vaseline is a wonderful thing once his rash starts to heal. I used it on my girls everynight to help prevent a rash since they tended to wake up with 3lb diapers http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif in the morning once they started sleeping more at night. Great as a preventative to protect their skin.

Sounds like a 2 pony family to me. Let me know when the time comes...mine will probably be getting out of ponies by then and I might have a couple I can loan you. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A nurse friend of mine told me of a great recipe for diaper rash. May help Cody.

Mix equal parts Mylanten, vasaline and corn startch. Spread evenly on the infected areas.

It works like a charm. The aluminum in the Mylanten is what does the trick.

Best to check with the doctor first but this remedy really helped Ally when she got diaper rash. Much better than Desitin.

Thanks again everyone. His diaper rash is getting better already and he went for a check up today. We found out that he has Exzema. Also found out that 2 of his siblings were found to have lice! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif Poor little Cory. We don't think he has lice but we're keeping a close eye on him. I went to Wal Mart tonight and bought him some stuff to wear because he only came with 3 outfits.

Horse shopping went well today too! Went to see 2 and I like both. So now we're going to see what the trainer says. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Jinglings from texas!

Exzema is fine if you controll it, let it get ouf of hand, and well.. its not. I have it, and during the summer and middle of winter it rears its lovely head. Keep skin dry, lots of lotion, and if needed get the dr. to give you the steriod creams, granted you can only use them for a week or so, but they work! If you want lotion sugestions, ask. I have a list running... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ezxema is a pain when it gets out of controll...

My daughter had chronic excema...it was awful! We tried absolutely everything.

The biggest thing is to stay away from anything perfumed, like most baby products, soaps and lotions.

Hydrocortisone is fabulous stuff, make sure you ask for an ointment instead of a cream. Ointment has less perfumes in it, and is usually less irritating to already inflamed skin.

The Aveeno line is great. The lotion has been a staple in our house since Dev was a baby.....much easier on skin than the perfumed Johnsons baby products.

For baths, the Aveeno oatmeal bath is great, very moisturizing without drying out baby's delicate skin.

ALso, keep baby in natural breathable fibres, cotton, linen and so on. And do NOT use fabric softener or anything that will coat the fabric when you wash it. I had to wash everything if Devyn's twice, once to clean it, and once with no detergents to make sure I had gotten all residues out.

Dragons is so stupid!

I have excema. Only shows up certain times a year with the weather and all. I didnt get steriod cream until I was older and went to the doc.
When I was younger, I agree with 4_beatin-Aveeno is awesome, it was a miracle for me!

Another really good product for eczema is Cetaphil cleanser. Has no dye, fragrance, etc. Completely non-irritating, great substitute for soap. Comes in a liquid cleanser and a bar form (if you get the bar, get the plain one for the baby rather than the anti-bacterial.) Can even use the liquid form without water. Available at most chain drugstores.

Applesauce, My 19 month old son got exema(SP?) and the best was actually vaseline its gross but it really helped and so didnt eucerin creme which is just like vaseline. The info posted earlier about the Aveeno also was excellent I did notice that helped. For the diaper rash which my son got when ever new teeth were coming in the vaseline worked the best. My mother is from the old school and I have to say http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif it worked really well and really fast. I agree with the stay away from the strong purfumes and such... Bath and body works for me is a run away factor. My friends keep buying me stuff, and i feel bad, but it goes to one of them in secret. She loves it though. =D The cotozone creams are good stuff, being that yours is so young im not as good with what to. many people grow out of exzema in their teens, keep your fingers crossed (im not one of the lucky ones)

At this point I think we need to just stay with mild lotions. Social worker told me today that it's EITHER exzema or a rash from laying in urine. He goes back to Dr. tomorrow for shots.

First hearing is today. I feel pretty confident that things will go our way. Next hearing is on Monday.

BTW - a friend of mine with excema swore by Bath & Body Works lotion. She got it as an adult so may not be applicable for the little one but the lotions helped more than anything else out there (& she tried EVERYTHING). The other thing that helped her was being in salt water. For some reason, swimming in the ocean helped. Oh Applesauce, your pictures have made me cry. Happy tears for his being in such loving hands. Sad tears for his past.

I don't know your whole story-perhaps someone will point me in the direction of the other threads?

From what I gather here, it sounds like you are doing an incredible thing, and are up there on the ever-growing list of COTH guardian angels that I am proud to "know". It is so inspiring to hear about all the fabulous, positive, important, loving endeavors of our posters.

I don't know if you are adopting or fostering or what, but I will say that providing a child with a loving home is (IMHO) perhaps the single greatest thing any person can do in his/her lifetime.

--->I was an adopted child (at 4 days old), and I count my blessings every day for the wonderful, wonderful gift of adoption both sets of parents gave me-both my loving "real" parents, and my biological ones I've never met. I don't know much, but I do know I was born to a 15 y.o. who was NOT in the position to give me a good life. Putting me up for adoption was the greatest gift anyone could ever give me. My little brother and I (both adopted) were given the oppurtunity to have incredible parents who let us know every day how much we are loved. I grew up surrounded by endless love, a supportive family, and unbelievable oppurtunities (including, of course, owning/showing/riding my beloved horses!)-things my birth parents were not in a position to give me. I am so lucky and so blessed.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for working to give Cory the gift of a life he undoubtedly deserves. Loving parents (even if only short-term) are the single greatest gift any child can receive, so please be strong and take pride in your most wonderful undertaking.

Jep: What a beautiful post! Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I did a search but couldn't find the original "It's a Miracle" thread so I'll give you the story in a nutshell.

We signed up with Social Services last summer to become foster parents with the hopes of adopting a child. Last September, a darling little girl was born and abandoned in the hospital by her mother and we were lucky enought to be chosen to foster her. We had pretty high expectations of adopting her until her paternal grandmother stepped forward and wanted permanent custody. She won it. We couldn't fight it because technically we were just babysitting for the state. Well, even though grandma got custody we really bonded with her and she has asked us to be the little girl's God Parents. We still get to see her and keep her every other weekend and be a part of her life which was so important to us since we had gotten so attached to her. Enter into the picture now, Cory. So, that's the story int a nutshell. It's been a roller coaster ride of emotions with her but Grandma is a wonderful person and takes such good care of Nikki Leigh. She came over today and brought Cory a care package of clothes and toys so there's a happy ending where that is concerned.

Of course we want to adopt Cory. It's unbelievable how attached we've already gotten to him in the short period of time he's been with us but we can't help it. If this ends up the way it did with Nikki then at least we were here for him when he needed love, care, and support the most. That's the least we can do.

Applesauce... how completely and utterly amazing and unselfish you must be to give such unconditional love to this beautiful little boy. Surely by doing this and knowing it could lead to heartache, god will see what wonderful and loving parents you are and bless you with the gift of being able to adopt him.

You are truly an inspiration!!

Applesauce,

Congratulations on your newest bright eyed addition to your family!!

I do not post often, but thought this may be helpful for Cory's excema. I ordered some products from Equine Elite for our horses (Microbial Spray & Wound Relief Lotion). This is absolutely wonderful stuff for injuries, allergies, scratches, thrush.....you name it! Anyway, a friend who has excema was over one day and she was having a difficult time due to the excema. She had heard me raving about the Wound Relief lotion and asked for some. She used it and was immediately free from itching and the swelling, etc. She was so impressed (she has suffered with excema for a long time) that she contacted Equine Elite Labs in California and is now using their products. I do not know if she is using the Equine or Human products. If you are interested in speaking to the lady from Equine Elite, they have a toll free number. Also, anytime I have ordered product, it has been delivered via UPS immediately.

What a beautiful child! I'm so glad he's come to you and Mr. A. Hopefully, he'll become a permanent part of your family.

I too am an adopted child, and give thanks daily for my wonderful parents (no, not the ones who made me) who've always been there for me. Here's hoping that you'll both get the oppotunity to give a child the same wonderful start in life that I had. Blessings and best wishes to all of you.

Thanks for asking! Cory is doing very well. He's had a bit of a virus but he's getting better now. Poor little man was fussy, had diarrhea, and was vomiting but much better. The hearing on Monday went well. Next hearing is on April 19th I believe so we are just waiting to see what happens then. It's so hard...we are getting attached. He's so fun and such a happy baby! OH!! His diaper rash is gone, his body rash is fine, and his cradle cap is just about cleared up too. Nothing like a little TLC.

Good news on the horse shopping front. Going to try a horse I really liked for the second time this Sunday! Keep fingers crossed that this will work out too.

I'll try to get more pictures of Cory up soon.

Ooops! Almost missed this. The next hearing isn't until April 19th. That's the 30 day review. So far, Cory has had weekly visits with his mom and sometimes his dad shows up and sometimes he doesn't. Cory is happy and smiles all the time and is HUGE!! At 4 months he already weighs over 17 pounds!! We started him on cereal this week too.

He met my QH for the first time last week! You should have seen the look on his face. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif His eyes got all wide and he was like "Man! Actually, I was trying to download a video clip of Cory...it had him making spitting noises but for some reason the clip didn't come through. OH well.

We are still in a holding pattern. The hearing is on Monday but there's good news. Mom and Dad have not shown up for their visits the past 2 weeks. Really makes things look better for us. After the hearing on Monday there's a 75 day hearing where if the Mom and Dad haven't complied with what the court orders them to do, then the "goals" for the children will be changed and then Mr. A and I can proceed forward.

So, we're still hoping and praying. Cory did go to the barn with us yesterday evening and "helped" muck stalls. He sat there and blew spit bubbles and had a good time.

I'll let ya'll know what happens on Monday.

*phew* Whatta day!!! I just got home a little while ago and have been on the phone most of the night. The hearing was held today and.....

HE'S STILL WITH US!!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Basically he's with us now for the next 75 days until the next hearing. Mom pled guilty to neglecting her children. No one else in the family has done what they said they would in order to file for custody. At this point Social Services is going for parental termination and the goal for the children will change. The next hearing is when we can be introduced as wanting to adopt Cory and termination will be sought by Social Services. Am I rambling?? I'm exhausted. I can hardly type. I got home tonight and Cory was sleeping in his crip and he just looked like a little angel. I couldn't help it. I snatched him up and held him and hugged and kissed him. I was rewarded with a big sleepy grin and a look of adoration from him. Back to sleep he went. I don't know what's going on at this point with his siblings...if they become available for adoption we may try to get one Cory's brothers. But this is down the road...we are just thrilled that we are still blessed to have him in our lives. More pictures coming soon, I promise.

Thank you everyone for your continued prayers and support. The jingling is working!

Just another update on the Cory story. *LOL* I just made a rhyme! Anyway, the 75 day review was one week ago. Good news!! The court found that the evidence was strong for the children to remain in the custody of the state. We now have Cory until the next hearing scheduled for Nov. 8, 2004. Both parents were NOT present for the hearing which is a big no-no as far as the courts are concerned. They still have a list of things they have to do in order to regain custody of the kids (that's what happens on Nov. 8th) and if they are not compliant with that the court has ordered then parental termination will take place.

So, we are another step closer in being able to adopt Cory for good. The social workers are all confident that things will go in our favor. The other wonderful news is that Cory's other 5 brothers and sisters are all in homes where the foster parents want to adopt them as well.

Cory is now 6 months old. He weighs over 21 pounds, is babbling non stop and sits up on his own as well as rolls over. He loves my horse and squeals in delight when he sees him.

His room is done in the Blue Jean Teddy theme and I've decided that his first pony's name will be Blue Jean Teddy.

I also want to take a moment and give my gratitude for the amound of love and support we've recieved from everyone here on the board. You don't know how much this all means to Mr. Applesauce and I. Thank you.

Our little foster daugher from last fall came and visited last weekend. She is 8 months old now, can you believe it? Cory took a shine right to her and gave her a big kiss on her mouth. It was the sweetest thing I've ever seen!

Reminds me of my little cousin! Cept he thought the quarter horse was a lion. He walked right up to the horse and started growling! After we explained its not a lion and that its a big cuddly pony he walked up to the horse and nuzzled his cheek on the horses' cheek! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif Aren't kids cute!

Good luck with everything, and thanks for keeping us updated! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeeehaaaa!! I only caught up with this thread today - way to go A and Mr A!! I was adopted as a 6 week old baby and have had the best ever possible life ('cept my folks wouldn't buy me a pony when I was a kid, somehow I don't think Cory'll have to worry about that one http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ) Roll on Nov 8, got my fingers and toes all crossed...

Applesauce, you and mr. a. must be wonderful people. I will keep my fingers crossed that you are awarded custody of that adorable little man! How did you get into doing foster care? I have been considering it for a long time because my children are older and I really miss having little ones around the house. Mr. chai and I have talked about adoption or finding a way to help kids in need because we have a loving, warm home to offer but we're just not sure how to go about it.
Good luck with Corey. He is a lucky little guy to have you there for him!

Excellent! Now, instead of one wonderful child in your life (Nikki), you get 2! Life has such a strange way of working out. Congrats and here's to hoping parental rights are terminated!

Chai, it's quite easy to sign up and be foster parents. Just call your local Department of Social Services and ask about taking Foster Care Parenting classes. There's a big application you and your husband have to fill out (kind of like applying for a loan but more personal). They do background checks on you and do homestudies. You have to attend foster care training and you recieve a little certificate. And then the phone calls start from the social workers asking if you can take in needy children. Be prepared for the emotional roller coaster ride of your life! It can be heartbreaking as well as completely rewarding.

If you'd like more info, please feel free to PT me or email me.

Oh my god that is so wonderfuL!!! I have chills - I SWEAR I clicked on "Off Course" intending to start a thread "How about an update, Applesauce??" and here I find this fabulous news!!!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Cory and I hope that all continues to go so well. And I am so glad you are still able to maintain contact with the other little baby who you gave such a wonderful start in life. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I take it you are adopting a kid? That is so great! My "little" sister was adopted at 5 years old with us (now almost 18!), and was the oldest of 7- abuse, neglect, drugs, etc, etc... We were so happy to have her come to us, but the year with Social Services was ----! Good luck to you, and do keep us posted. How wonderful and exciting!

Thought you guys would like to see a picture of little Cory. He's like that all the time. He's the best baby in the world and we just love him to pieces.

Things are still going very well. We feel very confident that things will work out our way and we are sooooo excited.

Thinking to self...Is it still too soon to go pony shopping?

It's never too soon to begin teaching them the "P" word. (po-ny! po-ny!)
As an aside, one of my neighbours were fostering 2 brothers, and eventually adopted them. Then, they fostered 2 sisters, and adopted them too! Instant family! And they're all terrific!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments on Cory. He is an absolute angel and loves to smile and laugh. And like Scar Face said, the girls will be standing line for him...they already are! Mr. Applesauce calls Cory a chick magnet. I believe we'll just have to install another phone line for him or hire a personal secretary to take his messages.

Irish Ei's: Consider that kiss given...he loves those Raspberries on his tummy too!

His brothers and sisters are all doing very well. They are all in foster homes where they are wanted and where the families want to adopt them. One of the foster mom's called me and she wants to get all the kids together so they can see eachother. We all believe it's important for the kids to know who they all are and to remain in contact with one another.

Cory thinks my QH Jax is the funniest living creature on Earth. I take him down to the barn to visit Jax and Jax will sniff Cory and run his muzzle over Cory's head. Cory just squeals with laughter and tries to see if Jax's ear is attached to his head by pulling on it. He's also tried to see what Jax's ear tastes like. I guess it's only a matter of time when Cory is up and running where he'll try to see what the stuff tastes like that comes out of the other end! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif

HE's enough to turn a confirmed "non baby" person like me RIGHT around.

I can only imagine when he gets to my favorite age of 4!!!!

And how cool to develop the extended family with other (*fingers crossed*) adoptive parents of Cory's bio sibs!

I have not read this thread before now (at least I don't think so... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif)but that baby is adorable.

I was adopted, as was my sister (we are not natural sibs) and I have always felt blessed. Please make sure you always tell little Cory how special he is, as I know you will. My parents always told me that I was "chosen".

What a beautiful gift!

That is absolutely beautiful! I will always remember that. Another phrase that sticks in my mind is the story where a little girl was explaining to one of her classmates that she was adopted. The classmate asked what adopted meant and the little girl said, "My Mommy said that it means I grew inside of her heart instead of her tummy." http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif

What a wonderful, happy baby! I am so happy for him and for you that he is in your lives!

I've followed this story since the beginning with little Nikki Leigh and I'll be hoping and praying for the happiest of happy endings in November. How perfect that the other foster parents want to adopt Cory's siblings - and how perfect that you'll be able to get all the children together so that they will know each other.

Another raspberry for the little man from me....

Applesauce, he is as cute a Pie!! Adorable. I must tell you, after years of trying my Aunt finally adopted a little girl, then found out she was pregnant, and had another little girl. When someone asks her "which one is adopted?" she says "oh, I couldn't tell you, I don't remember". Cory is a lucky sweet little Pie.
