View Full Version : helmet certification

I'm looking to buy a new helmet for day-to-day riding. There are many helmets advertised as "schooling helmets" or "for trail riding". They have the same certification as the skull caps and the helmets advertised for jumping.

Is the difference just the styling? Or do some of skull caps and jumping helmets exceed the certification? Is it okay to jump in a schooling helmet if it's ASTM F-1163-04a/SEI Certified?

All certified riding helmets meet the same ASTM F-1163 standard, whether they cost $40 or $400. None of the actual test results are made public so it's not possible to say which helmets offer more protection (over and above what is required by the ASTM standard) than others. What is important is that the helmet you select fits properly so try on multiple styles and brands.
