View Full Version : Small Jingles Please: My 4yo Homebred Had a Small Colic : Updated

This is my first ever colic. Vet has just left. As I was feeding this morning Abba never even attempted to eat her food - big danger sign! She was not sweaty, she was not trying to roll, she was no showing any pain signs, she just wouldn't eat. Took temp and it was 100.8. Started walking her and called the vet. Should add she had poops in the stall and was passing a little gas.
He arrived and found her heart rate normal and good gut sounds but still wanted to palp her. He found a bit of"skin" on poop that he found and determined she had a very small impaction which had just started. So fluids and oil were administered and he thinks she will be fine, but we have to watch her obviously. She is to only have a little hay (she doesn't know this yet!) and a little food of which she gets very little anyway and it's alfalfa, oats, and beet pulp. She will go out in a little while when her tranq wears off.
I am really thankful my vet just didn't think things were fine because her heart rate, gut sounds, and gums were normal. The palp showed things were a touch amiss and therefore things weren't allowed to progress.
So some little jingles for Abba would be nice.
Thanks
Terri

In this weather sometimes horses don't drink enough water and then it's very easy for them to get impacted. I had a similar thing happen here and the vet oiled and administered electrolytes as well. It's good to catch it before it gets more serious....
Good luck!

Thanks for the jingles. I've been racking my brain trying to think what I've done wrong to cause this. She does seem to be drinking plenty. One thing I've always liked about her is so does drink plenty where some of the other ones I worry about not drinking enough. I'm out checking her every so often as she's out in the field with her sister. She seems happy enough.
You wouldn't believe today. So obviously everyone was a little late in going out this morning and Abba had to wait until her tranq wore off. So kept her sister and her mom in with her so she'd have company. Took Abba and Heidi down to the field and they had a little canter around. Next thing I know Heidi is galloping flat to the boards and bucking as in having fun. But she's not slowing down. Now during our bad spell of weather my husband had to use the corner of the field (where nobody ever ventures because it's wet) for muck. So it's just a small pile nobody goes near. Heidi, for some dumb horse reason, barrels straight into the pile and flips completely over!!! I go running over to a mare that now has her legs sticking straight out of the pile lying on her back and she's not trying to move. All my husband heard was crazy lady screaming "OMFG HEIDI'S DEAD!", followed by only seeing straw 10 feet in the air as he was walking the mare down the hill.
She was cast and luckily once we got her moved a little she bounced up like nothing had ever happened and took off at a trot to get some grass. Honestly, what the heck was that all about! You all don't know Heidi but laid back describes her to a tee.

Thanks everyone for the jingles.
She was her normal self this evening when coming in. That means pee and poop as soon as she enters the box! Did not seem too impressed with the nibble net and proceeded to whack the crap out of that thing while trying to get hay out of the little holes. Took her temp which was normal and she ate her small dinner with her normal gusto. So hopefully it was just a minor episode and we will be back out to check on her a couple of times during the night. I have the broodmare's camera at a little better angel in which I can see most of Abba's stable too so that will be a help.
I love the snow angel thing by the way! Heidi by the way seems perfectly normal. I thought she'd be somewhat sore but appears unharmed from her "tumble". I've decide hunter chasing will not be in our future!

Yes, Abba is back to her normal self. Really despises the nibble net, but I think it's necessary in her case. As my vet said make her have to work for what she gets. And Heidi didn't have anymore "lost my brain moments either."
We had a lovely Valentine's Day as Stella (mother of Abba and Heidi) had a beautiful colt foal by Iroko. I will post pictures in the appropriate place when I get some decent ones. Been slightly busy and away with the fairies lately as my husband in leaving for Saudi in a 12 days. I had to buy the colt a foal rug today as we are getting another cold spell which we don't usually get at this time of year. He's ever so cute in the rug!
I can't thank you enough for the Jingles as they seemed to have worked!

Congrats on your Iroko. I have a coming 6 year old gelding that I bred while Iroko was here in the States. He is growing into a lovely adult and a very nice sporthorse--unlike his Daddy, he's not crazy about jumping but is happy doing dressage work. My daughter started him (she was 16 at the time). They scored 75 on Training 2 at their first show with 90days under saddle. Plan to start showing at First next weekend and they are training most of Second Level as well. I can't say enough good things this horse--sadly he was my only breeding to Iroko while he was here. Best of luck with your guy. Is he a jumper prospect?

Terri,
An event or jumping prospect as the mare is a National Hunt TB mare. How and ever I don't breed for the Olympics. So if he is anything like his brothers and sisters he will jump for fun but more importantly he will be rideable and easy to deal with. Oh and um a very very easy keeper! I really just want to put a horse out there who can be ridden by anyone and who is good enough so that the rider has a good day jumping and eventing but yet get can still hack out on trails and go hunting too! I'm hoping to ship him back to the States with his mom in the fall when I come home. I will do all his fundamentals and get him going under saddle.
Iroko is a lovely boy and still a gent at his age. Is your Iroko baby on your website? Off to have a look anyway.
Thanks
Terri

Don't have a website, but you can see him on photobucket here--he's Zydeco ZSH:

I can't say enough good things about my guy. His dam, who I leased, could be a rather difficult mare, so I am glad that the handling he received here on our farm and his Dad's DNA were effective in building such a solid citizen. It's so cool to have been there from the start and now see him being successful as a sporthorse--it's definitely what breeding is all about. Enjoy! I'd love to see your 'edition' when he's ready for photos.
