Last Wednesday (2/3), mare came in from turnout with two swollen hind legs and a temp of 102.3. I called the vet on call that night and was told to give Banamine and SMZs and wrap legs.
Thursday morning, mare has swelling in all four legs to hocks/knees, no tendon definition at all. Regular vet was called and informed, sends out another vet in practice to draw blood and check mare over. Vet says vasculitis, unknown cause though possibly virus, keep on SMZs for 5 days, give Banamine as necessary for fever/swelling, keep wrapped.
Bloodwork (CBC, chem panel and fibrinogen) comes back normal, vet says if mare is not almost normal by Monday, will run tick-borne illness titres.
Mare improves throughout weekend, no fever even after Banamine has worn off, but still some swelling in ankles and pasterns even when wrapped. I call vet on Monday with update, we decide to hold on tick titres for now. Vet says go to 12 on/12 off wrapping.
Wednesday (2/8) evening mare comes in with thickening along the back of the RH. It looks like a mild bowed tendon and seems a little sensitive. Mare jogs sound, no fever, good appetite, drinking well, etc. She's wrapped and in that night.
Thursday things are about the same, still no fever, but some swelling in pasterns. She goes out unwrapped during the day and thickening gets worse on RH and also comes up on LF. She stays out unwrapped Thurs night.
Friday morning, no pastern swelling, no fever, no lameness, but thickening is now down the backs of all four legs, with LF being the worst and RH being the best. Have called regular vet with this update and am waiting for a call back.
Mare has not been off the farm in 10 months. None of the other horses, including the one she's turned out with, are showing any symptoms (which leads me to think this is not a virus). Perhaps this is bacterial? Fields are muddy from incessant rain/snow, but swelling stays down better when mare is out and moving.
Anyone else dealing with anything similar?
