Stell cell for founder?

Just read an article about Thorn Song (racehorse) that has been treated for founder using stem cell. I am curious how it would work? What is it being used to help rebuild? According to the article is was a last ditch effort and they were guessing only a 10% chance with the treatment (without it was a 0% chance of making it) and said they saw major improvement in just 48 hours. I am just curious in learning how this would help!

more study needs to be done on stem cell and laminitis, but i think it amazing the guy got 2.75 million and still has the horse.

He does not own the horse the insurance company does.
