I finally found a solution to keep my guy sound and a shoe on; glue ons. He has had them on since September. Ever since we gave up the nail on game and went to glue ons, he's been sound, ridable and shoes stay on. Farrier said he might be the type of horse that keeps them on forever. I'm okay with that. The price is not cheap, 350.00 for glue ons on front, regular shoes with clips in the back every 5 to 6 weeks but it is well worth it to keep him going. Farrier does not use the cuff kind but glues them on the bottom. Any drawbacks to keeping him in glue ons forever except the price?

Wow, your glue on's cost WAY more than mine and I didn't have the Sigafoos either (cuff ones). Bummer. What led to the need to do glue ons in the first place? Just curious.

Glue-ons are a great way to go for horses that have trouble holding regular nailed shoes. It costs a lot because the materials & tools are very expensive, and it takes a lot of prep work to do it right. If your horse does great with glue-ons and not so good with nailed shoes, go with the glue-ons. No problem to use them long term if it's done properly.

His hoof quality, especially at the wall makes it most difficult for him to keep shoes on, especially during the summer months. I've tried every supplement for extended time, limited turn out, shorter shoeing cycle, pulling shoes for 9 months to grow a foot but he always has issues with his feet starting April/May till September. I actually thought the 350.00 was a pretty good deal since my old blacksmith charged me that for regular shoes and for glue ons would be over 500.00. Anyway, the price is way cheap to keep him going instead of being stalled bound and yes, my blacksmith takes a long time to put them on. He also uses a shoe called the Yasha shoe which is interesting. It has a built in rim pad and expands and contracts at the heels. I was told it was like a sneaker for horses. I think Big Brown wore them when he was having hoof issues. Anyway, my guy along with poor hoof quality has underrung heels as well. The Yasha glue ons have really make a 100% difference in his soundness.

Our foundered horse lived in Sigafoos glued on for 2 years and that he was very very sound.
