Just wondered how long a mare can go after loosing the mucus plug- she is bagging up but nothing coming out yet - it is a bit too early - I would like her to wait a couple more weeks -
just wondering about the longest anyone has seen a mare go after loosing a mucus plug - this is the first time I have actually seen the mucus plug beforehand.

I have heard it didn't necessarily have any correlation as to foaling time. Some lose them a few weeks away and some just hours.

I do not put much importance on loss of the mucus plug when it comes to predicting foaling. The mare's udder and quality of milk is a much better indicator.

Another newbie question then - if it doesn't matter when they lose the plug in relation to foaling, what does the plug actually do?
